The 2012 Roland Garros FRENCH OPEN

5 more hours till play starts. Is there anyone here who sees the french open as something other than the worst major of the year? It doesn't bother me that the surface is on slow clay. What bothers me is that it's the only major left that hasn't adopted lighting in case of darkness. Players running out of light doesn't enhance the atmosphere in anyway, quite the opposite actually. Also night sessions are awesome, it gives more of the world a chance to watch the tennis. For example, it sucks being in California for the French, because play takes place from 2am-noon. If they added a night session, matches could go to 3pm California time. So to conclude, stop resisting technology and get with the times French open! Add lights and night sessions!

Let's go Federer!! I hope he can repeat last year's success here and go one step further. His draw is awful though.

Yeah, it is my least favorite major, and not because of Nadal's domination. I just usually enjoy the matches at the other majors more so than this one. But I have to say that the 2009 FO is one of my favorite tournaments ever. So historic.

Wasn't lighting supposed to be added this year? I remember talks about it last year.

The lit scoreboard that kept the Monfils match a couple years ago going for an extra 10 minutes doesn't count as real lighting...but yes I have also heard musings for a while that the French open would get some "real" lighting in the future

Don't they realize they lose money hand over fist? Watching other tournaments, during weekdays night session has far better attendance than daily session as people work earlier in the day. Not too mention stopping matches because of the sunset is such a pain in the ass.

Having lights to avoid interrupting matches is fine, but night sessions ? No. The French Open is a summer event, it's meant to be played in sunlight. Next thing you'll ask them to play in underground and air-conditioned courts...

Really? yes its a summer event, but that doesn't mean you should be unprepared for natural occurances such as fading sunlight or rain. American football and baseball are all outdoor sports, but most new stadiums being built have retractable roofs to be closed in the event of thunderstorms. But even the outdoor venues that don't have retractable roofs at least have artificial lighting. Id'e say that 90% of our highschools in Texas have lighted tennis courts. It seems like a no-brainer to implement them to at least avoid postponing a heated match to the next day. These professionals work their ass off, and a momentum swing may occur because the French open has no lights on their courts. If that happened to me, I would be pissed.

And your progression statement was rather unwarranted. I'm not proposing anything extreme. We're talking about lighting, not underground air conditioned courts.

Once again, I have nothing against lighting courts. It's night sessions that I think are contrary to the tournament purpose.

What are your thoughts on the retractable rooftops then (which they're going to install on Phillipe Chatrier)? Almost every tournament these days has night sessions, though I understand you attachment to tradition.

Though with the amount of Nadal-proofing the tournament they've done over the last few years you'd think they'd do night sessions and schedule Nadal for them every single time. :p

Like lighting, the retractable roof is ok if it prevents interrupting matches because of rain (or dusk). But it should be an exception and not a rule.
It's not really a matter of tradition, but of identity. If all tournaments had all the same playing conditions, and ran at arbitrary times to please the international crowd, then there would be no point in them taking place here or there. It wouldn't be "the French Open" any more, but "let's play on clay for a few days".

I agree that all tournaments should have identity, but you also want a positive identity. To me personally, the French is the tournament that is resistant to accepting simple upgrades.

I disagree. The sun is the same everywhere, nights are the same everywhere (roughly speaking, of course climate itself is important to playing conditions). For me what makes tournaments different are surfaces and crowds. In FO's case very rude crowds :p

Man, I have no idea what to expect of a federer/djokovic semi but I really want to be just as good as last year. It was crazy to watch live!

Just want to chime in with a great Youtube channel I found recently. He uploads full matches in HD and also compressed matches which are like extended highlight packages of matches. For example the 3+hr Berdych/Federer final was edited down to 25min. Truly excellent stuff.

I don't know if he'll do the same with the French, the channel seems pretty new. And it does take him a couple days to upload matches.

Oh nice! Save for YT's awful HD quality this is really handy. Thanks :)

Is there anything more boring than FO 1st week? For some reason I never find myself even checking the scores. Only saw a bit of Tsonga today.

wow thanks man, i'll definitely be using this.

Not sure if anyone seen this but EuroSport has an app out that allows you to buy a cheap subscription for a few bucks. Been watching it on my iPad and it works pretty great.

Has Roddick really become this bad or is it more the surface that doesn't suit him?

In any event, crashing out on the first day of a tournament is really embarrassing for a player of his stature.

Here's another YT channel that uplods full matches, has some classics too :)

Yeah, it's really nice you can do long vids like this on YT now without them being removed but I just can't get over how shitty the HD quality is :(

:o

I see ~6 euros for a month for the eurosport player. Is that the one? It would be great if they have a special offer to watch both RG and wimbledon for a nice price!! Especially if the HD on ipad is good. Maybe tennisTV is a better alternative? I'd only watch tennis anyway

1st round loss may be a little too bad but it's normal, I'd say.
Roddick's career record at Majors: Aussie: 38-11, Wimbledon: 39-11, US Open: 40-11. Roland Garros: 9-10.

Roddick often crashed out in the first round of the French in his prime, so it's hardly surprising he does it now.

And damn, Federer losing that #2 ranking because Nadal won Rome was really crucial, because his draw is terrible.

I saw him in Düsseldorf and he was simply atrocious. I honestly don't know why he even bothers playing on clay anymore. He still might win some indoor or grass court tournaments but even that is a stretch if he plays like he did the last few weeks. He might be hurt though.

To quote myself:

Rooting for my fellow country men (Melzer, Haider Maurer, Paszek and Patricia Mayer) which all will f''k majestically, like always.

Lost 2-3 against Berrer after winning the first 2. Always can count on Melzer to disappoint :D

Until the French Open invests in lighting, they should play a 5th set tiebreaker if it goes to 6 all. Poor Kevin Anderson and Machado

Fuck no

Azarenka lost the first set.

Mona Barthel destroyed by Lauren Davis. 1:6 1:5 Something most be wrong with her though. She played horrible in the last tournament, too.

Azarenka lost the first set. I wonder if she's going to continue WTA's infamous streak.

Will probably ease her way through the two next sets, but it's a bit worrying that after getting the otherwise great Mauresmo involved as a coach, she loses her standard rhythm of bollocking journeywomen through the first week. I mean, she's used to get at least one bagel in for each of the first three rounds.

Unless her fake Rome injury withdrawal wasn't so fake.

It's not going to be easy. Her timing is off and she's definitely not playing within herself. Maybe she will scrape victory though.

Yeah, something's off. You can say a lot of things about Vika but she's never been one two stumble against chumps.

This could be interesting. If Radwanska has a good run here and Sharapova goes down in QF, Radwanska could be #1 after Wimbledon despite her 6 losses to Azarenka. :lol

When Maria goes down in the QF Serena goes to the final and A-rad won't beat her. Or maybe.. better match-up than vs Vika. Fucc a lopsided draw, though - top half is barren compared to the bottom.
