The 23 Best Horror Games

What kind of horror is Nameless Game?
Adventure game. I mean, it's just fucking horrifying. The way your TwinScreen system will start buzzing and you have to play the game and the puzzle you solve in there shows you what to do is a bit of a stretch of belief, but still horrifying. I mean, just walking around the dark apartment and then you can hear the game's music, see a little girl look at you through a window, have doors randomly become locked or unlocked. It's just a testament to pure terror. And you can't really shoot or attack at anything, and that limitation just scares the shit out of me. I can shoot at shit in RE until it dies or I run out of ammo, but I can only run from a ghost until I can run no more and it eats my ass.

I wish they would bring it here =(

You look like a douchebag.

About the list, it's basically a console "horror" game list and thus missing obvious gems like System Shock 2, Sanitarium, Alone in the Dark etc. Which is a shame really.

And people, go play Call of Cthulhu : Dark Corners of the Earth if you haven't played it yet. A criminally underappreciated horror gem and bound to be found really cheap these days.

Its also buggy as hell

Wasn't Wii trolling, I actually love alot of games on that system, so I changed the pic to Vampire Rain because the graphics are equally as bad as Wii Music.

Let's not forget that bad graphics does not equal bad gameplay either, just because someone posts a cap of a horrible looking game doesn't make them a troll. Please watch what you say.

It does when it's in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with said game (Wii Music). All I'm saying.

Wait...

Are you saying he actually is just a douchebag or he looks like one?

:lol
I'm still here rolling my eyes. I said Kyroyume LOOKS like a douchebag... LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKS LIKE A DOUCHEBAG. LOOKS is the keyword here. I didn't say he is a douchebag. I wasn't commenting on the mental play. How is that any different from people saying the Amirox looks terrible or Wario64 looks like a douchebag?

Clive Barker's Undying, as well. Probably still holds up fairly well.

Hear this man, for he speaks the truth.

The game runs really well with today's computers. Even my 4 yrs old laptop with integrated intel chipset ran it butter smooth when I replayed it a while ago. Grab a copy if you see one!

I think we're forgetting the only true king of horror.

I'm going to say something I don't know if you'll agree with or not. It's not necessarily related to the discussion at hand, but here you go:

Phatasmagoria is garbage.

I haven't replayed it since '99 or so, and pretty much all of the FMV adventure games have aged very very very poorly. The themes and design of the game were pretty good, but as far as adventures go it was pretty run-of-the-mill. I wouldn't recommend anyone who didn't play it back then to play it now.

I'm just surprised that in a list full of horror games, the grandmother of shock horror in video games is omitted. Has any game since then done a choking death or a rape scene in the game? Definitely boundary pushing.

Also, Zork: Nemesis would probably fit the Horror category if we use the extended "horror theme" definition this list does, and it's an excellent game.

lol at eternal darkness.. the most boring game ever. The story was a complete rip-off of lovecraft, and, like all silicon games, badly written too.

play siren (on ps2, not the ican'tplayandicant'readps3version) to understand what is a great story

Resident Evil 4?? Really? :lol RE4 is the least scary of all the RE series, you have plenty of ammo and weapons. It's an awesome game, but its not that scary. I played it in it's entirety without problems.

Fatal Frame 2, now we're talking. I couldn't finish it, ever. Clock Tower SNES also had a incredible atmosphere and sense of defencelessness.

I've heard very good things about Dead Space, i hope my copy (PC version) arrives ASAP.

That article sucks. BADLY.

The fact that they put both Res Evil 4 and Bioshock in the top 5 makes it hard to take the list seriously if we're talking horror. Action, sure, but not horror.

bu...but..the king of survival horror is RE 1 & rebirth,
everybody knows it.
Or old horror pc games, or first Alone in the dark ecc..
Resi4 and Bioshock are action, not horror.

I like Bioshock, and while it has a bit of horror vibe with the splicers and everything, I never really considered it much of a horror game. To me all horror games should at least give you the slightest sense of dread. Dread that you don't want to go in this room or down that alley. Dread that you might have to fight some creepy ass monster thats going to fuck you up. I never got that from Bioshock. Honestly, it made me think of Tim Burton's Batman than anything horror related.

come on, resi 4 is not a horror game, not by a LONG shot.

where's the alien vs predator's human campaign in this list ?

How is RE4 not a horror game? You don't consider chain saw wielding villagers who burn police officers at the stake who have tentacles grow out of their neck horror based? What about those creepy spider things in the castle or the reanimators. Just because Capcom tweaked the controls to make the gameplay faster does not mean its somehow no longer a horror game. Its got lots of gore, monsters various things that want to kill you in horrible ways. Its a horror game, folks.

For the record, I would consider Splatterhouse a horror game. You also can't say dead space IS a horror game and RE4 is not. They both play pretty similar and I've never run out of ammo in either.

For me, Dead Rising was "scary" in the sense that it only took one screw up to get overwhelmed with zombies (particularly at low levels). People bitch about the save system, but in reality it had to be the way it is. Dying carried a heavy toll, and you never felt like you had a safety net underneath you if something went wrong. DR nailed the "survival" in survival-horror.

agreed and agreed.
Plus Dead rising is the only game that really nailed zombies.
The're ridiculously slow, stupid, basically harmless and pathetic when they are alone; you can run circles around them, make fun of them, slap them, shoot them with water guns and throw custard pies at their faces; but underestimate them and before you even know, you're surrounded by hundreds of them and basically dead.

One thing Dead Rising lacked, though, is the 'authentic zombie mode !' where one bite would turn you into a zombie. I've sometimes experienced having to go from one side to the other of the mall with just one unit of energy and boy was that intense.

Still, i would say it's more intense than scary.

Doom 3 has a lot of gore and monsters that want to kill you in various ways and is not an horror game.

For an game to be about horror, first it needs to scare you. RE4 didn't work for me.

I'd classify the games like I would the movies. There are a lot of horror movies like some of the later Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th movies that are pretty laughable and not scary, but they're still horror movies. Nobody is going to classify any Friday the 13th movie as an action movie or a drama because it has all the hallmarks of a horror movie. Same with RE4, it still has a lot of the same conventions that the previous games did. People who think its this radical sea change from the previous REs are fooling themselves.

Which is why I changed it because that was not my intention at all :)
Don't sweat it. Maybe I was trolling the console versions of Dead Space with my PC version screenshots.

Testify my brother!

I have no beef with it being on the list, only with it being #1.

Are you blind? Oh wait ... you're a Mets fan. All of that delusion that you have a good baseball team has clearly driven your brain to the batfuck insane level.

Dead Space looks fucking amazing on my HDTV ... and geniunely creeps me out. I'm not talking about the jumping out of monsters from obscure corners .... the atmosphere is fucking creepy.

Flickering lights, crazy shadows, positional creepy audio, faint ramblings of the ship's PA system in the distance, hearing monsters running through ducts .... I can go on and on.

The game is awesome.
