The 360 sucks for playing music :(

C4Lukins said:
Very true. It is great for background music while playing a game, but it sucks for just listening to a song on the system.

It comes down to this. If you want to just random some music up to play while your playing a game. Fine. But if you try to fine tune that experience or listen to stuff normally, the lack of fast forward and a more elegant interface kills it.

It's odd that every other aspect of the 360s interface has been changed or tuned since launch, except for this.

Let's not even get into iPod support. Ugh.
I'm surprised there's any iPod support at all. It's kind of impressive the 360 can read iPod playlists. My problem is I buy a lot off of my music off the iTunes store, and the 360 can't play those tracks. =(

Sorry guys I'm just not feeling your pain. It wasn't to long ago the only thing I could do was play a CD one at time. Now I'm streaming 5 gigs worth of music through my computer while playing just about any game in my library. How many times do you honestly need to skip forward in a song.

I think calling the music playback "horrible" because you can't fast forward is going a bit overboard. Stop listening to podcast's while playing games and start listening to music. It's just as easy listening to it on the computer or one of you numerous mobile devices.

Buy from Amazon instead.

People complaining is how things get improved/fixed, if everyone just sat around satisfied we'd still be playing the Atari.

both ps3 and 360 nxe suck at media.

bow down to the king...

windows 7 media center extender
(available on xbox 360)

MS doesn't allow you transfer files to the 360. They need to played from the external media source.
You can rip audio CDs. I tried doing that for an hour or two before I decided it wasn't worth it.

Some of you guys should use the Windows Media Center on it. All of everything I do is through there including live TV. I far prefer it to the PS3, except that the display isn't 1:1 1080p. It is a higher res than the regular dash however.

It can play the unprotected itunes music format can it not? I personally keep my WMA and MP3 songs away from my itunes tracks anyway. Not ideal but works really well for my purposes.

Yeah it's horribly basic. It also can't truly shuffle an entire ipods worth of music if you're playing a game at the same time.

My issue is that MS doesn't seem to care about usability until it starts to affect their bottom line. An update to add some basic features necessary to listen to podcasts wouldn't take that long, but we won't see it until podcasts start showing up for sale in the marketplace.

ARGH YOU'RE TELLING ME

I shuffle my entire iPod, because I go through songs until I find one that grabs me.

There's been ton's of features added to the 360 since the launch. What in the world are talking about.

Name some things that improved once it began to effect Microsoft's bottom line.

it only has the little problem that it stops playing music if you try to do anything else...

One of the recent firmware updates changed the PS3 music player. Under Music Settings ----> Output Frequencies you need to change it to 48kHz to get the old functionality back (Listening to music while on the XMB, web browser etc.) Not sure if that's what you're talking about though.

Backwards compatability? THey realised that peole were not too fussed aboutg it on the PS3 asnd then ignored it. Under-promised and over-delivered my arse. It's the reason i stopped playing Beyond Good and Evil and why i have not played Conker : Live and Reloaded and why i have not even bothered to check to see if The Punisher game works for it.

The PS3 is not much better. Try listening to a 2 hour podcast on the PS3 while surfing the web, and accidentally exiting out of the audio. Have fun getting back to 55 minutes into that GiantBomb Podcast.

(I could be an idiot though who never quite figured out how to properly work the music player on the PS3)
Your not an idiot, but the PS3 does have a handy dandy little feature that lets you skip to any exact time. Well, I know you can do this with videos (you hit triangle and its there somewhere), so I would HOPE you could do it with just audio too...

I'm just upset that the 360 won't display all of the music that I have in my connection. Streaming over the network, and it only finds a fraction of the songs.

The 360 is really bad for big play lists...

I spent a few hours putting a ton of songs into a all purpose multiplayer play list. Put it on shuffle and it only plays stuff starting with A or B... lame....

It's only playing the first 100 songs of your list. It does that anytime you play music during a game. It'll shuffle all songs when you're on the dashboard. It sucks.

Most of the problems you guys are having could be solved by a)putting your music on a portable hard drive. The 360 reads and displays the folder structure better like that. Better for shuffling and playing certain folders. Still no ff or rw though. Then there's b)use the media center extender. There you do get ff and rw. Plus it reads more codecs, for video enthusiasts. Pretty good GUI too.

Problem solved...and the answers have been there, for those of you saying MS have not provided a solution. Now quiturbitchin :-)

I have a problem with streaming music on the 360. WMP does not show up when I go into the My Music menu. Everything is correctly set up because it used to work, but now all my 360 connects to is PS3 Media Server, which I obviously use for my PS3. But it doesn't work for 360 and WMP is no where to be found on the dashboard.

omg dude please

Haven't used my 360 mp in like a year, or when I learned that I could stream my music from windows and store it on my PS3's Harddrive. But it was like rocket science: if someone hadn't posted it online I would have never known of this feature. Just wished there was more background like on the PSP (which is perfect)

Attempts have always been made to improve the consoles functionality. That includes music playback. Calling the music player horrible because of one missing feature is going overboard.

Explain the media extender bit.

.

It's an important aspect of listening to music though and in the age of ppodcasts vital.

the reason for that limitation is pretty obvious. it can't even play the entire contents of an ipod while you're playing a game; it limits the number of songs in a playlist, while ingame, to 100 songs or so. anything more and they'd start borrowing from the memory needed for a game. when you start getting tens of thousands of songs on the larger ipods and zunes, it can add up to quite a bit.

Let's not forget the inability to use Last.fm while playing a game.

Lets remember the ability to USE Last.fm.

I wish MS would re-engineer the listing system for music. Its slow and laborious, which puts people off from using it all together.

Please implement a scrolling system where you use the analogue stick in a circular motion to cycle through list via alphabet. Then use up/down on stick to browse within the group selected. Would make life so much easier

Is there a reason for this?

read above. if you're allowed to have an infinitely sized playlist, it takes memory away from the game, thus potentially causing some games to not function properly.

Woah wait a minute. In that update list a few posts ago it says "Copy non-protected files from USB, etc.." to proprietary storage devices. Since when can you do this? I just stuck a USB drive into my 360 to check and see no options for copying the music files directly to the 360 HDD.

Was wondering the same thing. That'd be pretty sweet.

It works streaming and in game, and that's better than the PS3. If I'm not playing anything, I use the PS3 for media. Quality of streaming for both is pretty horrible and should be fixed next gen.
