We remember it because...

Final Fantasy VII is considered by many to be one of the best RPGs ever created, and as a result it has amassed a dedicated following. This initial encounter was the player's first real introduction to the extremely popular protagonist, and not only did it reveal the game's combat mechanics, but it gave us a preliminary insight into the nature of one of Final Fantasy's most beloved characters.

Why not just make a list of 'my favourite games' if enemies can get put on the list solely because they're from a favourite game of yours, rather than because they're particularly memorable enemies.

I started God of War for the first time two weeks ago. Had you asked me this morning, I couldn't have told you what were the first enemies in the game.

I don't think everyone is reading this right.....its first enemy, not first boss. So pretty much the first thing you kill in the game(bunnies and chickens exempt)....

He is the first enemy you face.

Yes. Thats one of the most meorable shock sequence in a game. Everyone knows it...everyone creamed their pants.

I loved the Re controls once you get the hang of it and dont panic. I never played RE when I was alone in the house.

It's quite hard to forget the goomba's because you're bouncing on the heads a gazillion times throught the game.

With that said the shadows in Ico was memorable in that they started nicking Yorda from the off.

And Shadow of the Collosus how the crap can you forget about the sheer size of them at first sight.

Super Metroids Ridley has got to stand out to, the whole intro to SM was uber kewl.

I would personally vouch for the giant dragon from Demon's Crest. I was floored when I had to battle that thing right off the bat.

Have to say that first Goomba is the most perfectly placed enemy in the history of gaming. Watching casual players get destroyed so early on is amusing, until it happens to you...

There is some serious fail in that list. Most of the ones from games I've played I didn't remember, because Generic Monster Pack #1 is not memorable. Pretty much the only one of those that should have made it was Goomba, the rest should have been cinematic encounters like Ridley.

im surprised they didn't choose the hydra as the god of war enemy, it was a pretty surprising thing to run into a boss battle 1 minute into the game.

also, this.

for a first time player running out of the castle, climbing some hills and running into THAT as your first enemy in the entire game , its pretty awesome.

Not only is he the first enemy, he's also the only one who will stalk you the entire damned game.
Or you might run into him, as seen above. Might as well add that he's in the ass-kicking business.
