I dusted off both my 3dsl xl and my original 3ds and put custom firmware on them (very easy to do and can (and should) be done with latest firmware)). Just wanted to post to say how much I appreciate handhelds especially when you can mod them to hold a vast library of games. Using both of these, I actually prefer the original one because the screen is sharper and it's much easier to carry around (guide I used here https://3ds.hacks.guide/) I

I remember buying a flash cart for my DS, back in the day.

Being able to play emulators on a handheld was like magic back then.

Is the 3DS natively backwards compatible with all Nintendo handhelds (all the way back to the original Gameboy)?

I know that:
GBA is natively BC with OG Gameboy/Colour
DS is natively BC with GBA
3DS is natively BC with DS

From that, it seems that it should indeed be the case. I've got a 3DS, but haven't hacked it yet. The store is still alive and there are still games I want to buy, so I'm not going to do it just yet. In future, it would be great to have a hacked handheld with native BC all the way back to the Gameboy.

I had issues uploading from my phone too. I ended up choosing the "larger" file size and not "actual" and that allowed it to upload

The 3ds as you mentioned can only physically read ds/3ds carts but it can emulate very well all the way back to the nes. In terms of being online, it's safe to have custom firmware on your 3ds and still use the Nintendo network
