The 3DS is still wonderful

Seeing this thread bumped I went and dug out my old 3DS XL and my DS. I also grabbed my Vita and PSP. I noticed my daughter's dog got hold of the PSP power cord so it needs to be replaced. I found several games for each system but I am missing several too. I am sure they are all stashed together some place once I can remember where someplace is. I hope my SP is in that same someplace since I did not see it.

I think I am going to play through a few games on each to see if I can get that old gaming magic back.
That's a great list of systems and a lot of fun to be had. I recommend hacking all of them as it's pretty easy now days with step by step instructions online and it adds some major QoL items.

Vita memory cards in particular are annoying as hell, had both 32GB and 64GB go south on me so just switched to SD card mod.

I bought a new one a few months ago (new to me) as my original all red N3DS XL was stolen by an ex-friend.

I hacked the new one (I hacked the old one too) and am getting so much out of this.

Using the Hshop to play games I never bought back in the day (Nintendo still allows me to use the eShop to download games I already had)

Using emulators mainly for ROM hacks, but also Virtual Boy emulator that really makes good use of the 3D screen.

Running all 3DS games at N3DS specs. However Metal Gear Solid 3D is locked to 20fps, someone went into the game's code to find that.

Most importantly of all, it fits right in the pocket.

Is it 100% safe? I have a Majoras Mask 3DSXL and its pretty rare

Not 100%, there is a chance you can brick it but you have to mess up royally to brick it.

It's super easy to do especially with a N3DS XL. Just follow the instructions line for line and you'll be just fine.

To go into a bit more detail, the hack has you copy files over files and it'll run a program afterwards. Before you do that you are told to make a copy of the original files in case something fails. There is only like a 5% chance of it catastrophically failing and permanently bricking your 3DS.

Late to the party but I bought 3 3DS in the recent times (the Galaxy edition, a New 3DS XL and a New 2DS XL) and a couple of Etrian Odyssey I want to play there (which aren't available on Switch still). Missing still some more of those. Also bought some of the Megami Tensei ones, and I want to get the Persona Q and some of the other Etrians.

My New 3DS XL's battery only lasts like a minute after being fully charged for some reason
Replace it then. Easy to do.

I love my modded. N3DSXL as well. Tons of games on it, ergonomics are great, I love the big screens, and the fact I can store all my GB, GBA, DS and 3DS games on it is just awesome.

I really recommend the new 3DS or XL models (naming is terrible) as Nintendo improved the 3D "sweet spot" with these.

Either way, love this handheld alongside DS, but grips are a must! I often come back to mess around with ROGs, SRPGs or dungeon crawlers.

Edit: And those SEGA M2 ports are very good as well.
What grips do you recommend?

I got the Retroid Pocket 5 and the dual screen addon. Been playing a bunch of DS and 3DS games, they look great with 6x resolution and nice big colorful OLED displays. Both system's libraries are legendary, with tons of stuff that still holds up great.

How is 3DS performance on that? Can you get say 2x upres?

Been eying Ayn Thor or the Ayaneo Pocket DS, but even for Thor it will be like $500 after shipping and tariff. :(

I've been playing the original Fantasy Life (a fairly demanding game) at 6x upres and getting a solid 30fps, which the game is unfortunately locked at. I activated the cheat code just now to unlock 60fps gameplay, which also runs incredibly smoothly but additionally runs the game at double speed lol

The original 3DS had potato hardware, I'd say even the most demanding action games hacked to run at 60fps will probably have a solid framerate even at 3-4x resolution.

That's pretty cool! I really need to get back into DS/3DS emulation.

Might spring for that Thor… or just use my Ally/SteamDeck, lol.

My N3DSLL and Vita are always in my travel bag, Switch and onwards are just too big.
BTW I got lucky with a dual IPS screen on the N3DSLL, but the battary life suffers. ;(

Gotta love the 3DS, RE Revelations it´s still a stunner! BTW, i think i have the New 3DS with IPS panel, looks really good and doesn´t degrade when looking on angle. Any other tips to find out if it´s IPS or not?

If you can run Homebrew, download the app called 3DSident, run it and it will check the screen type.
I have another 3DSLL with TN screens and tbh, the difference isn't that significant unless you put them side by side.

It's one of my favorite systems and the last great handheld. I love the Switch, but handheld games used to be developed differently. They were made specifically for the system, with its limitations in mind.

It's also the best place to play Oot, Majoras Mask and all the nice dragon quest(if you count the NDS)

Before hacking, think about what you want to do. Is it worth it ? If it's only to try a few games, nah, don't do it. To play imports ? How many of them ? How much do they cost ?

I´m still impressed to this day that they got Xenoblade running on that thing. As some kind of demake, yes, but it was an impressive feat.
Though I always prefered the Vita above the 3DS, mainly because it had Persona 4.
Still the last true handheld.

I want to say yes it was but at the same time I don't know anymore because I hacked mine right before Nintendo pulled the Nintendo Online support for the 3DS offline and back then the hacking method involved having a 3rd party server send and accept a friend request to your system/account so you can get some system specific keys needed for the hacking process but with the online servers shut off I haven't looked into this again.

Stability wise I haven't run into any issues or bricked consoles but an actual hacking method without online servers is unknown to me.

I miss the days of true handhelds.

I would love a Switch 2 Mini model that was a clam shell design the size of the OG 3DS where the screen takes up the entire top flap.

Mod it, there's an app you can download to check what kind of panel you have.

I have 2 3DSs and have hacked precisely the Majora edition. No issues.

It's sad that the spread of mobile gaming on one side, and Sony's insistence on releasing luxury handhelds only to drop support too soon on the other, limited devs' interest in using the 3DS to its fullest.

I was hesitant to hack mine with a special print but rationalized it with peeling buttons and chipped 3D slider. I should have just done it earlier, it took 20 minutes of following a guide and then was playing it the rest of the night.

Virtual Boy games make better use of the 3D than actual 3DS games because with the basic graphics and clean lines, I leave it turned on longer without getting irritated. But I also have the launch style base 3DS with the worst 3D.

Yes. What I miss most is the stereoscopic 3D. I plan to get it back this year when Acer releases their 27" glasses free 3D monitor. You can even play 3DS games in 3D with the Citra emulator.

Too many people were harsh on the 3D. Sure, it was a cheap implementation (but then you didn't pay much for it...) and a fair number of implementations were lacklustre, but when it worked, it was fantastic.

The New 3DS fixed the biggest issue with it.

I want 3D gaming back.

I bought that Acer 3D monitor. Its amazing seeing some of these games in 3D. DMC5, Sekiro, Baldur's Gate 3, and Atomic Heart particularly stand out.

Don't care for the dual-screen gimmick, and the games are difficult to bring forward. I'd prefer to see these games ported to NS/NS2:

LZelda ALBW
LZelda OOT 3D
LZelda MM 3D
Metroid SR
LMansion 1
SMario 3DL
SMario 64 DS

I've been playing Wario Land VB and it looks fantastic with the 3D on. I suck at Mario tennis but the 3D works great there too.

Mario Tennis was the pack in game so I decided to load it up first. I must have tried it a dozen times way back before winning a match. The trick is pressing the button sooner than you'd expect, they wanted you to judge the timing with the VR depth. I had to relearn it over a few games before the "oh, that's right" moment.

Honestly Wario Land will probably become my favorite use of the 3DS. Feels very surreal to be playing it.

A modded 3DS is amazing.

But I think one of the coolest things is the ability to mod the games. For example, https://restoration.zora.re/ this improves the Majoras Mask remake considerably, making it the ultimate version.

And now some guy on GBATemp made a mod pack for OoT 3D that fixes everything about that remake too. https://gbatemp.net/threads/ocarina-of-time-3d-ultimate-qol-mod-pack.673266/ you can now control the camera again, the blood in the well is back as well as the Ganon fight finally beign dark and atmospheric again.

It feels really good to have the ultimate version to play of these legendary games.
