Yes. Just like with any other average or just good movie they were payed to hype.

Ebert slipped some cheddar to give Avatar a good review, you heard it here first.

On one hand, MCH won Best Actor in a TV Drama.
On the other hand, The Hangover won Best Comedy.

Hmmm...............

I enjoyed Avatar but... IT'S NOT OSCAR WORTHY!

I can make the distinction between entertainment and artistic merit but I'm not sure many on here can.

In your opinion. But you're not even a professional critic whose opinion is worthy of note, much less a cadre of professionals whose livelihood is the critical analysis of movie making.

Your tears are just sweet nectar for those laughing at butthurt haters.

Seriously, The Hangover over 500 Days.

what the fuckity fuck.

the hangover was a pretty awesome comedy tho, was probably in my top 10 list from last year, it's not like it was some great injustice that it won

The GG is starting to turn in the MTV awards or something. RDJ winning for Sherlock Holmes? REALLY? It should've been Daniel Day Lewis or Matt Damon.
Preview of the Oscars.

It should be noted that almost all of those professionals whose livelihood is critical analysis of movie making have given the biggest awards to the Hurt Locker.

Be that as it may (I'm too lazy to check), the fact that it won Best Picture Drama and has such a high positive rating on aggregate review sites (especially among top critics of RT), indicates that it's quite far from the trash that the haters would like to pretend that it is.

While I didn't find Hangover funny at all (which in turn means I thought the entire thing was meh) I don't understand why 500 days was in that category to begin with. It's neither comedy or musical.

Apparently some mediocre cheese Ebert's best films of 2009.

* An Education

* The Hurt Locker

* Inglourious Basterds

He has a mainstream and independent list, and gave Avatar 4 stars and the Special Jury Prize.

Do a bit more research next time.

Edit: And for christsakes he put Knowing on the list, he might be a bit off this year.

It's not trash, it's just not worthy of winning in any best picture categories.

It has won pretty much everything important. I like the Globes, but they often go for the popular.

What? You didn't think it was a romantic comedy? also it had a musical number..so.

True. Ebert does some weird shit at times. I tried to go to the Chicago times website but it was taking forever to load.

Plus FLAMING MOOSE!

The fact that this clip is only 9.5 minutes goes a long way to illustrating my disappointment. I just wish he had been given more time, but he certainly maximized what he was given. As he said, "Quality, not quantity."

:lol

But yeah, Avatar winning was a laugh and a half. No "bitter tears" about it. But it was a long night of hilarious japes. Michael C. Hall beating Jon Hamm. Glee beating 30 Rock. Toni Collette beating Tina Fey. And I forget, did Lithgow actually win over Emerson? Damn, that's like Eddie Murphy Raw levels of pure comedy.

Ricky had a great wingman; the awards themselves.

I thought it was more predominantly Drama then the other two. It has a musical number, but no one sings. The only singing is done through the kareoke. And while it does have a few funny moments, I still wouldn't call it a comedy. Because it's sad :(

Nine was badly received by critics and audiences, and nobody cares about the Informant. JGL should've gotten it, but whatever.

i know he did a blogpost defending knowing when he originally reviewed it, that he was an outlier admist overwhelmingly negative reviews, but if you know ebert's history, it isnt really a suprise he gave knowing a great review, ebert is a HUGE fan of alex proyas' previous movie Dark City, so much so that he recorded a commentary track for the movie back in the day, so he may just be a fan of the guys work

but other than that his list is solid, guy is still the best mainstream movie critic

Really? I was smiling by the end of the film. Great way to end it.

I don't understand how Sherlock Holmes was a comedy. Was The Fifth Element a comedy as well?

I felt sad. I thought the ending was kinda, well not bad, but broke the I dunno. I felt it more real without the ending.

On a side note, I don't get the love for Olivia Wilde. She's ugly as hell and has a weird forehead. :lol

If she was on her knees, begging for your dick, you would say no?

The "comedy/musicals" categories of the GG haven't made sense in years. It's a dinosaur that should've gone extinct a good long while ago.

Kindly put it back in context if I have twisted your meaning.

How about quoting the entire sentence instead of just that one part that makes it look like I accuse everyone of being paid off? (even though I'm quite certain a lot of these hacks are being paid off... or they're truly horrible reviewers who love blockbusters with big marketing budgets) How about acknowledging that Ebert's rating was lower than both the top critics rating, the rotten rating and the metacritic rating?

Having said that I still disagree with his score and think he kinda followed the hype on that one. Even the users in his site rated the movie lower.

Boooooooo. Wilde looked gorgeous.

Avatar wasn't a bad movie, Cameron created a beautiful world and he deserves the award for best director imo but other than that the movie is not award material.

Yeah, I kind of agree with you. It's not even that the story is cliche, but that it was delivered in such a dumb way. Avatar should get awards for special effects and Cinematography, but not for drama of all things.

Just sayin'.

Ricky Gervais was amazing. Respect.

As for everything else, why do people give a shit who is given awards? I might have an opinion on what the best movie of the year was, but why should I care what 90 other people think? Up In The Air and The Hurt Locker aren't suddenly worse movies because they didn't win GGs.
