The 80s had the best music

When you are a teenager and something bad happens, you feel as if it was the end of the world. When you love something, you really do love it and it sticks with you for life- music, movies, books, crushes, etc.

Pfft, no it didn't. You're just remembering the best of the 80s music and forgetting the mass amount of shit. The amount of absolutely amazing music now completely dwarfs any previous era as long as you're willing to look for it.

yuuuup

There's plenty of 80s gems no doubt but I am up to my neck. My standards for what is good is so ridiculously high because there is always new amazing shit coming out. In the 90s I was intrigued by pretty mediocre bands because everything was so curated and expensive and I could maybe afford like 20 albums a year. It's fucking amazing right now.

And frankly, I never forgave the 80s for putting that wet, reverby snare drum on every fucking song. The 80s had some cornball ass shit going on.

I think the music video fad of the 1980's gave pop/ rock/ new wave/ metal/ rap/ hip hop/ whatever a huge shot in the arm. There was a scramble to find the "next big thing".

Every Breath You Take -The Police
Self Control - Laura Branigan
Home - PIL
Eazy Duz It - Eazy E
Shadrach - Beastie Boys
Down In It- NIN

Great stuff, and yeah it covers everything doesn't it.

Have to post another FGTH one, it's being used to promote Deuschland '83 and still sounds really fresh:

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes

a couple of years ago, I went to see a Tears for Fears/Spandau Ballet double bill (though in the end Tears for Fears were playing support). Funny thing is half the audience seem to have changed in the intermission as in

Tears for Fears Fan: "I really want to see Tears for Fears, but am not at all interested in Spandau Ballet."

Spandau Ballet Fan: "That's so interesting, I'm completely the opposite. I love me some Spandau Ballet."

Tears for Fears Fan: "Dude, I have a crazy idea how we can save some money."

Spandau Ballet, yuck.

My two cents:

We Built This City. Easily one of my favorite 80s songs.

Synths are one of the reasons I love the 80s so much. It gave it such a unique feel. As a kid (born 1994), I almost exclusively listened to 80s music. As I've gotten older I've gained a huge appreciation for all music, but the 80s will always be one of the best decades in music.

Yeah, I've always been hooked on synths.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of this to this day, it was definitely .... something.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Love Missile F1-11

It was sort of electroclash 15 years too early.

I have a hell of a lot of love for the 70s and 90s, and I'm even starting to appreciate the 60s, but ever since I played Vice City I've been a huge fan of 80s music. I was 14 and knew bugger all about music if it wasn't current Hip Hop, UK Garage, or Grime. But there I was listening to the radio snippets on the official Vice City flash site. Listening to Grandmaster Flash - The Message was just the start. I appreciated every radio station there, and that was big for me.

The 70s gave us Appetite For Destruction and disco though, and the 90s gave us New Jack Swing and RnB, the best rap and rappers to ever come out of the industry, and more I can't even think of.

Edit:
Evelyn "Champagne" King - Love Come Down

I could post links all day, but Spotify or YouTube related videos will be enough for most.

LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE
Oh Lord that song is so good.

Unless you're talking about something else, Appetite For Destruction was released in 1987 (you are talking about the GnR album, right? I could be mistaken and you are just referring to the attitude that was part of that decade.). New Jack Swing also has its roots in the late 1980's. Oddly the movie Ghostbusters II tried to push New Jack Swing further into the mainstream with stuff like this (funny how I didn't notice that Donald Trump made an appearance in this video).

I'm not slamming the '70s or the '90s though. I love music from a lot of different decades, but I will always have a special spot for the '80s.

you're just not willing to look for his cousins nephews sister soundcloud bro

you don't get it

Ha! He said there was a massive list of new music that dwarfs what came before it. I like music, and I want to hear these tunes. Surely a giant list of great new music that is way better than previous eras shouldn't be too hard to post.

should I expect Kanye?

My 80s playlist is 55 tracks long and there are still songs in this thread I don't have on there.

What a decade.

How about dropping your 80s knowledge instead being that guy in these threads.

I will always love the 80s for the birth of house music and fuck it man I love the general sound of that decade. It's very distinct, especially in pop music imo.

Marshall Jefferson - Move Your Body (The House Music Anthem)
808 State - Pacific 202
808 State - Magical Dream
Rhythim Is Rhythim - Strings of Life
Adonis - No Way Back
Yes - Leave It
Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music
Cybotron - Clear
Blondie - Rapture
Front 242 - Headhunter
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
New Order - Blue Monday

The 80s were the style over substance decade.
We had 20 years of prolific experimentation only to end up with a decade that entrapped everyone into its infamous and distinctive sound created by the omnipresence of synths and drum machines, which made most records feel cheap and outdated in no time.
Certainly the 80s has its share of great works from various artists, but it pales in comparison to what the 60s and the 70s have produce. Then there's this little particular that 90s rock (more specifically, the Grunge movement) felt like they needed to burn with fire pretty much everyrhing that 80s rock had put oout at that time.

I appreciate the music from the 80's a lot more now that what I used to at the time. Especially when we have artists like Carpenter Brut, Mega Drive, Betamaxx getting more popular these days.

EDIT - How could I forget Selorekt / LA Dreams.

That's music. Styles change. 80s expelled disco. Sure grunge may have expelled the 80s sound, but grunge is pretty much expelled today for dance music. Shit changes.
I enjoy it all. Quantifying decades is ridiculous.

About damn time! I've been saying the 80's was the last blast of great music for years and people laugh at me. I love all the choices but you forgot:

Probably the most influential band for the grunge copycats bands of the 90's. Westerburg is brilliant!

Then you got U2, The Smiths, REM, X, etc...

Im a mobile DJ so I have a fair bit of experience listening to what other people think is good. Im also a 90s kid.

As far as my experience has shown..

70s>60s>80s=90s=00s

70s is the bomb.

So many classics that will still be bangers in 100 years time.

Video killed the radio star
99 Luftballons
Bad
We Built this city
Billie Jean
Thriller
Beat it

I could go on & on.. but imo 70s/80s/90s are the best yrs

for me

It depends what you think of Rock. I think it was the last great decade for Rock music.

Mainstream rock I guess. Like you had good stuff like Van Halen and tons of metal(although I'm admittedly not much of metal fan) and underground stuff, but it was also the decade of hair metal. Fucking Bon Jovi and Winger and Poison and Cinderella and Ratt and all that other garbage. Just think the AOR rock of the '70s or the alternative tinged rock of the '90s was a lot better.

Although we did get some of my favorite records ever like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle and Zen Arcade and Double Nickels on the Dime out of the decade...
