The Armageddons and Deep Impacts of Video Games

I'm surprised at how many of these are from the last three-four generations of gaming, though! Surely there have to be quite some examples of this from the sprite-based generations?

But say, Bugs Life and Antz? Was there some huge media buzz involving insects? Or Volcano's?

I feel like this happens SO often in the film industry.

This happened multiple times with Pixar and DreamWorks.

Toy Story - Small Soldiers
A Bug's Life - Antz
Finding Nemo - Shark Tale

I'll present this one with a ginormous asterisk but : Mighty No 9 and Mega Man Legacy Collection***

The second delay had MN9 potentially releasing a few weeks after the Legacy Collection, thus competing with a similar product with the same designer.

Of course this didn't happen! But it was interesting to think how they would have fared in the same space competing directly at the time.

Halo 2 and Killzone. Killzone was created solely to compete against Halo. Released a week apart too. LOL

Only issue is, the same developer made both.

Allied Assault and Call of Duty were created by the same team.

There were more MoH after Allied Assault, confusing as fuck. WW2 games everywhere.

Street Fighter II and Fatal Fury.

Contrary to what some people believe, Fatal Fury was not a Street Fighter II clone. It was already in production before Street Fighter II was released. Also, an interesting detail is that Fatal Fury was designed by Takashi Nishiyama, who created the original Street Fighter.

Dirge of Cerberus and Devil May Cry 3

Wing Over and Ace Combat

World of Warcraft and EverQuest 2

Age of Empires 2 and Empire Earth

X2 and Freelancer

MechAssault and Steel Battalion (possibly Armored Core 3)

Battlefront and Battlefield (2)

Doesn't have to be a big media buzz, it may be something internal like scripts going from hand to hand all over Hollywood and one copies another, or a book, or another movie's success that makes people come up with what they believe is the logical next step, and maybe out of 4 projects that different studios started, two were really close.

For instance, the scriptwriter of a movie called Erased have claimed that his scrip go into the hands of the people who made Taken 2, and then they copied his movie for the sequel. But the point being that Taken was a success and they both thought what the next logical step would be.

Twisted Metal vs Vigilante 8

Or

Twisted Metal vs Rogue Trip

Any combo of these games really, but apart from TM 3 & 4, they were all pretty great / fun car combat games.

recently its overwatch + battleborn.
Seriously folks can't stop comparing / debating the two even though they are completely different games.

That's a perception problem, to be honest. It's not good for Battleborn because everyone is talking about Overwatch, and it's good for Overwatch because everyone is talking about Overwatch so why bother getting "that other game" when they both look so similar?

I mean yeah they play differently, but if I go by just the betas OW is a much more interesting game than BB is. The reality of them being different doesn't change the perception, which is the reality for everyone with that perception (aka nearly everyone).

From the "olden days" we had Final Fight versus Streets of Rage. Boy are THOSE two camps always out for blood with each other!

I think Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt are the more interesting games to compare as far as Mega Man successors go. Now, while both games involve Inti Creates, one is made by Inti Creates in conjunction with Inafune's Comcept, the other is made by Inti Creates alone with no involvement from Inafune and his company. Furthermore, while the first Gunvolt has been out for a while, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is due out this year, pretty close to Mighty No. 9's release.

Titanfall 2 versus Infinite Warfare, smackdown of the century! OG IW versus NuIW, recycled space shooters versus Robot sci Fi sword shooter!

Battlefield vs Call of Duty

Battlefield is better.

Sonic vs Mario in the 90s

Metal Gear Solid vs Splinter Cell MGS3 time.

Resident Evil vs Silent Hill back during the PSone Days

Witcher 3 vs Fallout 4 recently

Dark Souls 2 vs Lords of the fallen
(HAHAHAHAH)

Sleeping Dogs vs GTA V vs Saint's Row (Triple show down)

There are many more.

Urban Reign and Beatdown: Fists Of Vengeance.

The beat 'em up genre was barely alive in 2005, but suddenly these two games were released almost simultaneously.

Overwatch and Battleborn is the obvious one right now, but character-based shooter felt like a pretty natural place for the genre to go. Twilight Princess and Okami is the one that stands out to me for the sheer randomness of two such similar games coming to the shared conclusion the the people were frothing for a game about wolves.

Hey now, let's not be forgetting the best beat 'em up to come out of 2005

Weren't DOAX and Outlaw Volleyball released around the same time?

There was also Dave Mirra BMX vs. Matt Hoffman BMX... though both were likely reactions to THPS.

Reminds me of Giest/PsiOps. Completely different games that came out around the same time, but that didn't stop people from comparing them.

Didn't Final Fight Streetwise come out around the same time too?

Fake edit: yeah february 2006, urban reign PAL release and Streetwise.

Resistance and Gears of War

I actually thought the former's enemies were called the Locusts at one point when it was actually the latter

Quake vs Duke Nukem 3D
C&C vs Warcraft/Starcraft
Mechwarrior 2 vs Tribes
Total Annihilation vs Dark Reign
Fallout vs Baldurs Gate vs Torment
Resident Evil vs Silent Hill
Tekken vs Street Fighter

Most of you guys ain't getting this, Armagedeon and Deep Impact came out at the same time.

Yep, we're looking for two games that were seemingly made in a vacuum then get released at a similar time and everyone confuses the pair. Most of the suggestions are just X inspired or influenced Y.

Uh. What? One is a slow lumbering Mech sim and one is a fast paced shooter where you glide/skate....

Not seeing it...

The community back in the 90's had a big competition going on in which was better. So many "versus" threads.

Maybe I was thinking more of MW3 though, Tribes came out in '98, 3 years after MW2.

This thread quickly turned into that thread about minimalistic cover art.

God of War and Dante's Inferno is more like it.

Darksiders is more like Zelda.

No. The Zelda influence is more pronounced later on, but Darksiders is heavily inspired by God of War both in story and gameplay. It clearly started out as an even more God of War-like project.

Quake vs Duke Nukem 3D
C&C vs Warcraft/Starcraft
Mechwarrior 2 vs Tribes
Total Annihilation vs Dark Reign
Fallout vs Baldurs Gate vs Torment
Resident Evil vs Silent Hill
Tekken vs Street Fighter

Almost none of these apply. Especially the last one. Like, what?
