The Banner Saga Development Thread

So is this game like Fire Emblem where your heroes will become stronger and carry over to next mission? Or is it like Skulls of the Shogun where everything is reset after every mission?

Because I didn't like the Skulls of the Shogun concept at all. There wasn't really any feeling of progress as you started out fresh on every mission. I want my heroes to grow more powerful for each mission I play.

Who the hell thought of that? That's a garbage way of doing something new. If nothing else you should at least get better weaponry over time.

The hate because of the F2P concept is so incredibly misguided, if that's what you are referring to.

With Kickstarters you need to be transparent.

You can't take money for a game, then release F2P game as "beta combat system for proper game" and hope there won't be problems with your community.
Right now combat thing is just F2P game with microtransactions. There is no "but" Microtransactions are there to make money.

Creating combat game also needs time and work. This means they used part of their resources to test QA and other thing for game not which people payed for.

IT IS only their fault they have controversy. If not for good material for a game and progress they showed they would be already returning money to people or being sued (because that is possible with kickstarter EULA)

Except Factions is made up of mostly content that will be used in the full game, and they used the information from battles in Factions to help test the combat for the full game.

I am excited about this game, but the Factions thing was handled very clumsily. That said, I don't think their intentions were shady, rather they just underestimated their audience and the level to which they would be held accountable. It is is somewhat excusable since they were one of the first big KS - hopefully they and others learned from their mistake.

The game itself still looks great, can't wait for the Linux version.

Sure but they didn't say in kickstarter that they plan to create different game with monetization in mind.

That is lack of transparency.

1) Maybe they didn't plan on it.
2) It's essentially not a different game. It's not like resources have been wasted here.

Just read this: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/Alex...Kickstarterfunded_game_a_look_from_inside.php

It looks to be an interesting game, with a nice setting, good aesthetics, and hopefully engaging mechanics. I don't see why anyone would be negative from the outset on this game. The game is still the same as the one that was pitched a year ago and it looks to meet a lot of the expectations and promises.

Misguided ?

The game was kickstarted in April 2012 with promise of delivering in 2012.

It's January 2014 right now

Dude really? The original kickstarter asked for $100,000... they got like $700,000. What were they supposed to do with $600,000 if they weren't "allowed" to spend more time making the game? Wouldn't it be a whole lot fucking worse if they took all that money and then only worked on the game for less then a year?

Just think about it for a second. Is it possible that it's a lot of harder to make a $700,000 video game then a $100,000 video game?

+1

The game looks awesome.

I'm really looking forward to playing this tonight. I've expected them not to be able to meet the deadline when I backed it.

The Faction-incident rubbed me a wrong bit back then, but I think it was mostly because I'm not interested in the multiplayer bit and that for more than a half a year (around the time for which they had originally had announced the full game) they talked only about multiplayer, multiplayer, multiplayer...

The RPS article does shed some light on their side but I still think their communication could have been better.
[edit]I think mistakes have to be expected from startup indie companies which make up the majority of kickstarter projects. Being a team of veteran game developers doesn't mean you're doing well in project management.

This is probably the prettiest game that will come out this year. I have used art from them as a wallpapers for a while now, and it's always stunning to look at.

I also don't understand the vitriol about factions - it was a multiplayer only combat testing ground. That portion of the game wasn't interesting to me, since i don't play multiplayer turn based games, but it was good for the studio and the main game, as a proof of concept of sorts.
The main game is apparently way larger than they thought it would be in the kickstarter pitch, around 12h of game time and not 4h, so it's understandable it took them a while longer than anticipated.

Can't wait. Hope it's not a 4 hour game.

They say the first chapter is about 12h+ with replay value since there is multiples branch that you can take.

I can understand all the controversy all around this project, but almost all kickstarter game are delayed, especially all thoses who got WAYYYY more money then they anticipated.

The cool thing about Factions is that it will still be updated with future patches as the other chapters will be release and will still be free.

I still backed a few projects and im proud that this year, I will probably wont buy a game since at least 6 kickstarters will be released :3

Problem here is not that they released multiplayer combat version, problem here is that they released combat game with mc in it. And it is named Factions.

Releasing free multiplayer version of game is whole other thing than releasing game with different title and microtransactions in it.

This is why people get angry. Because they agreed on releasing part of game for free to test combat system, not to release it as stand alone game with mc.

They should say that in original video that they want to release what they released and i am sure this would become red allert for people and i am sure as hell they wouldn't get 700k.

But let's take different example...

Hey i am Brian Fargo i am making wasteland 2 first we will make F2P combat game with micro transactions and then we will release Wasteland 2.

Yeah... he wouldn't get almost 3mln

Austin Wintory just sent me download instructions for the soundtrack! Listening to it right now! It's awsome (so far)!

I bought it on impulse just for the art. Now reading that Eurogamer review, can't wait to boot it up in a few hours.

His soundtrack for Journey was INCREDIBLE. Can't wait to download the game later today and see what he's done here.

The voice acting and sound design are just as good.

I thought they didn't do voice acting. During their PAX demo they said it would coast more then all the money they raised from their KS campaign just to do VO because of how much dialog and how many characters they had... is their VO in the game now?

Pre-Loaded complete, can't fucking wait. Glad the first review is so positive.

There is some insane pressure on the first big KS projects, but I have a feeling they will deliver, mostly.

From Stoic :

Alex: We decided that recording some narration would really help fill out the world. When you're traveling you'll hear a short line or two from the leader of that party. If we had tried to record every line of dialogue in the game it would have been nearly insurmountable. We took a little more "Bastion" approach to it, and I think it's really helped the overall experience.

Pre-purchased and pre-loaded, my body is ready. I really hope there is some decent character progression during the campaign or I will be incredibly disappointed!

The save system sounds kinda horrible though, as I like to start over battles if I don't do well enough or a character dies.

FTL, Chivalry, and Shadowrun Returns are all well-recieved KS games.
