The banter in Gears 4 is unbearable

Yknow what is unbearable in Gears 4? The rainbow coloured microtransactions! Getting hard to tell the locust and Cog apart at a quick glance during gameplay :|

Edit: sorry to derail.

But yeah the banter didn't bother me much. I've never thought of Gears to have overly amazing dialogue so wasn't really an issue.

Go ahead, I'm trying to forget :P
Well for one thing edf 4.1 has some jouyously amusing banter if that counts

Even in the heat of battle the edf anthem encourages your soldiers to power through the alien menace!

Sorry i couldnt find any cleaer videos ^^;

Not aure if counts as banter, but 50 cent blood on the sands had hilarious lines as well-
"I'M GONNA MURDER YOUR WHOLE ENTIRE GENERATION, MOTHER#%%€!"

"Laylow! Laylow! Laylow! Laylow!"
"Yo Fiddy, jump that big ass ramp!"

To name a few :p

It's like dad jokes, lots of "Let's not fight that monster again, okay!?"-type quips.

Did anyone enjoy it as so bad it's good? For me it's just bad.

I don't remember the old games being like this, but then again I'm older and more cynical...
The old games totally did this but got away with it a little more as they were utterly self-aware.

If anything there were more in the first 3 games. The problem is that the characters are so utterly forgettable in 4 it makes it worse.

OMG, its insufferable, isn't it? Just non-stop. You can tell they hoped it would be endearing, but its really like fictionalized version of Marvel Movies people like to complaint about. Just a lot of quips and sarcasm and constant goddamn banter.

I never even got past the first act. Mostly cuz the combat is so dull, but the constant talking between the squadmates just killed it. I wanted them to all die and shut up forever.

You missed out on so much good stuff, especially act 3 onwards.

As for the banter: While it wasn't as memorable as in previous Gears games, I do like that they tried something new and actually enjoyed the ride. Loved how prominent Marcus was throughout many parts of it.
I also really liked how they introduced each enemy through dialogue.

Preaching to the choir here. I find it absolutely irritating in games, TV shows, and movies. To me this quippy drivel is the dialogue version of dangling keys in front of a baby. A means to fill dead air to make something seem more exciting and human by injecting meaningless parasocial stimuli. I guess it works though, since this Youtube Reaction Video-tier writing is everywhere.

I tuned it out also, too busy enjoying the gameplay and drop dead gorgeous HDR.

Marcus was great though.

Fascinating how "tried something new" amounts to "made the game sound like a bunch of other generic AAA characters".

Gears writing was dumb and crass. It knew what it was and it let you know straight from the get go. Now it's dopey and serviceable at best. Really wish these big IP's would stop being handed off to teams that want to make them more like everything else or go in some "bold new direction".

Yep seems it needs to be a new game to get a pass for some....

Agree.

Played a few chapters coop and it sounds like written by 12 year old. All jokes are shitty family comedy level stuff.

Gears 4 was never advertised as going in a bold new direction.

"Lookit all dat JUICE!" "Hey marcus, how much do you think all that imulsion's worth?" "I don't think i can count that high"

"The cole train dont go "woo woo", ITS WOO!"

"Aww, aint dat cute" "like two assholes on their first date"

"Enough with the falling down already!"

"It'll save us for later, like a snack" "Bullshit" "You think i'm kidding?" "I think your batshit crazy, that's what i think"

^ These are all from my years old memories off the top of my head, of playing these games over and over when i was really invested btw

The first trilogy are made up of a lot of "so bad they are good" lines, it was apart of the B-movie charm.

I don't know how much Gears 4 has changed it cause ive never played Gears 4, but if its anything like the other ones, i don't necessarily see the issue

Kinda why there was another option before that: Make it like everything else.

There is absolutely nothing that stands out about these new cast of characters.

It's not like that at all.

"The COLE TRAIN runs on WHOLE GRAIN, baby!"

The old games had a lot of jokes, but it was more gallows humor. Gears 4 is more like "let's have a fun adventure!" (plot is grim, but they take it too lightly). I think a lot of the problem is that JD and Del are both real jokey characters. One of them needed to be the straight man. Kait isn't as guilty of this but I don't really remember much of anything from her.

They're all one note, Kait has no jokes just kinda focused on the main plot objective. So yeah not much to remember.

"The COLE TRAIN runs on WHOLE GRAIN, baby!"

"Aww yeah, that's my kinda SHIT!"

"We're trying to reestablish contact with command, but the radios dont work for SHIT, sir."

"Your going WAY DOWN! DEAD DOWN! SO DOWN YOU WONT EVEN KNOW WHICH WAY IS UP!"

Man, i wish i could remember Cole's epic rant in gears 2 when he got ahold of the microphone when they went into the hive. Fucking had me dying seeing all the locust just walk around hearing this dude blaring out of the speakers, one just stopping and looking up as if to say "what the fuck".

Those kind of moments i really loved.

Kait: Can we not do Rock, Paper, Scissors this time?
JD: Or as Del likes to call it. Paper, Paper, Paper

They way he brings it is pretty funny.

Huh. I can't say it bothered me much. I wouldn't say the original games had amazing banter nor bothered me either. There's definitely a different dynamic in this one so it does play off a little different but I felt like it served its purpose fine enough.

Kinda why there was another option before that: Make it like everything else.

It's not like that at all.

The new cast was made to be not as dudebro-ish as the past Gears characters. And that's fine. It made for interesting parallels between JD and Marcus' crew. The same thing happened with the kombat kids in MKX.

I'm playing through it right now and I don't think banter is too bad. It's not the best, but it could be worse. On top of that Gears were never famous for its writing, so I don't know what you expected OP.

I was holding into my Xbox One just to play Gears 4, but after hearing the "banter" in a gameplay video I decided I couldn't stand a game full of that.

I sold my Xbox One shortly afterwards. It might sound a little over dramatic, but I guess as a direct result of that banter, Xbox lost a lifelong customer.

Banter in general is unbearable. Mostly it's a AAA-game-curse I've found. the quality of the dialogue is generally embarrassing. It makes zero sense when you're playing games where you're just 1 person. I literally had to turn of audio in Rise of the Tomb Raider because Lara is insufferable and her constant remarks and interruptions are just awful. I already hate it in Horizon. From what I can see, the main character doesn't shut the hell up. It makes zero sense to me in games like that.

I didn't play Gears, but it looks like is going to be the same for Ghost Recon Wildlands and I hate it already.

"A little over dramatic"?

lmao, I'll say.

I thought the banter was fine. It's been a few months now since I've played the campaign but I recall laughing while playing myself and playing co-op. It's not perfect but it's on par with Gears1-3.

I laughed a couple times during the sequence at Marcus' house.

His kid sucks and the voice acting is boring. Gears 4 made me realize how fun a distinct and hammy voice over can be in a game with a simple storyline.

The old gears games have some of my favorite vo. A contender for best vo sequence ever is Marcus and Dom sniping in I think the second game?

"That's five motherfuckers!" Wouldn't be nearly as funny in any voice but Marcus Fenix's.

It didn't bother me for the most part. I did get extra tired of the "omg stop saying we're clear" joke. The longer it went on, the more it annoyed me.

The constant talking between the squadmates just killed it. I wanted them to all die and shut up forever.

Amusing coming from a guy who's username is "LeonSKennedy".
"Where's everyone going? Bingo?"
"Rain or shine - you're going down!"

Not that I disagree. Bantz between characters is always rough. I just found it funny.

For me the thing that bugged me the most is how mundane and mailed in Laura and Liam's voice acting was.

Both of them (especially Laura) are capable of doing a better job.

Different strokes for different folks, really didn't bother me and I enjoyed all the convos between Marcus and his son, even during the heat of battle
