The best finish to a series?.

Nolan. said:
With this gen seeing the curtain call for the Metal gear series (allegedly) and supposedly Halo along with it. I was trying to think of a series that's gone out with a bang and at the same time wrapped everything up nicely enough to end things...but I couldn't think of any. Is there such a series.

Edit: and also which series do you feel should end and soon.

Jak 3, the game wrapped things up very nicely.

I really hope they make another sequel with a new story.

Supposedly Twilight Princess was the last of the 3D Zeldas "as we know it", which I take to mean those in the Ocarina mold. I'd say it's a pretty amazing finale in that regard.

Kojima might stop them from doing Metal Gear Solid again but I definitely see Metal Gear Raiden in the future....

I think the days of designers having any control over their characters is long gone. The publishers/developers own it all now. Only back in the 8-bit days where one person could develop a game on their own could that happen.

Resident Evil seems to be building up to something big that may wrap things up.

:lol :lol :lol

RE is made by CAPCOM. take a step back, ask yourself how long Street Fighter and Mega Man have been going on.

as long as they can bleed one measly dollar of profit from their franchises, they most certainly will.

Beatmania I/III and Thunder Force.

I think it's somewhat safe to say that Broken Thunder doesn't quite count as a continuation.

Wow, I am amazed how many people are naming games that are not the last game in their series when the OP asked what was the best finish to a series (not the best end of a trilogy, or the last game in the series "as we know it").

It's hard to say since a series is rarely finished unless the series just dies from sales (like Bubsy did after the crap that was Bubsy 3D).

NOTHING can beat ZoE2.

Wrapped up everything from ZoE1, ZoE Idolo, ZoE Dolores, ZoE Fist of Mars and had the most awesome endgame/ending out there.

Exactly. If it was just the end of the series there wouldn't be half as many posts in here. Almost every game named in here will probably see another game at some point. Whether that's direct sequel or not is a different story.

Mortal Kombat

I was fully satisfied with the endings at the end of MK... But then they kept making sequels *shrugs*...

Phantasy Star. I know technically it continued with online spinoffs PSO and PSU, but Phantasy Star 4 is like the ultimate fanservice + it wraps things up nicely.

Prince of Persia trilogy. I felt it ended very well with
the Prince basically losing everything, but taking control of a crumbled empire and explaining the last few years to Farah all over again.

Final Fantasy IX

oh wait

I think some people are confusing this with satisfying endings, which is a completely different thing

As far as the original topic: Terranigma

I was VERY satisfied with the ending of the Legacy of Kain franchise. The final act of Defiance had a perfect mix of action, drama, and closure. Raziel's last words to Kain actually sent chills down my spine.

No, no, no, no, no!LoK hasn't ended.Who told you that?CD still wants/needs to make at least one more game. There are A LOT of unanswered questions.Hopefully with Tomb Raider Anniversary/Legend/8's success we will get a sequel.

I've never played the third game in either series, but Jak and Sly are done, right?

Yeah, they both ended very well, can't believe I forgot about them until you mentioned them.

I just wish Ratchet would follow suit sooner rather than later, but I'm expecting them to go to R&C Future 3 at the least. Oh well.

FF won't ever end will it?

I say Super Metroid, I had thought it ended everything but appearently not, but it did end the zebes/mother brain saga.

Will GOW3 be a good finish?

Xenosaga Ep 3 by far.. they were able to tie up the story in a surprisingly good way considering the amount of loose ends after episode 2.

Resident Evil needs to stop. Call it something else. I don't care.

I mentioned this in a thread yesterday, but I think they should have dropped the Resident Evil title over here and just called it Biohazard in all territories now. Makes more sense now, especially with 4 and 5.

Came into the thread to post PSIV...

Despite that this finish of the series was also the begining of the series, and taking into consideration that the series isn't really completed yet, Legend of Zelda (NES) did a good job of wrapping things up, and will be the best finish to the series when it ends (if ever).

I think Digital Devil Saga 2 tied up all the loose ends from the first one.

It was really rushed though...

I can't really think of any ending to a series of games left me satisfied.

Ah, Lunar 2: Eternal Blue has a fantastic ending!

Video game fans seem constantly sequel-hungry, willing to bitch and moan at any half decent ten year old franchise that isn't resurrected instead of just letting something be over and done.

I can think of great individual games, but I can't think of a series that ends well.

Dragon Quest III, brought the conclusion to the Loto trilogy and end up being one of the best RPGs ever.

MGS4 could turn out to be the best finish to a series if snake does shoot himself. When I saw that in the trailer, it was a really shocking moment. Its a great way to see snake go out. It shows just how dedicated he is to his mission by killing himselkf because he knows thats its best for the world and it also goes to show that he's really undefeatable. No one can kill him because he's so strong and he's the one who con trols his own destiny.

I doubt snake will kill himself though. If thats how he's meant to die, then kojima wouldnt have shown that scene in such an early trailer. Infact he wouldnt have shown that in the trailer at all. However I do think snake will die. Kojima has said that this will be the last MGS game he directs and although he's said it before in the past and gone against his words, I think this will be the final one. He wants to bring an end to the snake era and he wants to do it rather than leave someone else to continue snake's story. If snake does die, which i think he will, Im sure kojima will make him go out in style. Its going to be a really memorable moment.

Metroid Prime 3 will be a great ending to the series from the looks of it.
Als Metroid Fusion (if it really is the last Metroid 2D game :'( )
SOTC if it was a series in the first place.
POP trilogy
ZOE2

Someone on retronauts (Kohler?) was saying that the Megaman Zero series wraps up pretty nicely.

Yeah, it does, but i was kinda dissapointed with the ending.
Zero dies and i still don't know what happened to the original Megaman, Protoman, Roll, Dr. Light etc.

They said that before Ann Hennig left CD for Naughty Dog. She wrote most, if not all, of the LOK mythology starting with Soul Reaver. Without her, there's no real sequel.

When you look at it, every Jak game had a satisfying ending which resolved almost all things and never really hinted at sequel. Anyway, i'm hoping that ND will make a sequel for PS3. It was my favorite franchise out of all three (Ratchet, Jak, Sly).

You think so? I think the pacing was perfect in the game. I couldn't ask for anything more...

...except maybe for knowing what that "one word" is that is referred to at the end of the game.

Though I guess there's a reason I don't know it yet haha.

I'm not sure how you could be satisfied by Defiance's ending; while it wasn't the cliffhanger ending I'd been desensitized to by the Soul Reavers, it was still far from real closure. Hell, the main villain is still alive and kicking.

There's far too much left unanswered for me to be able to close the book on the series without pangs of regret.

I didn't like it. After
Argilla's death they pretty much faster forward through the story covering only the most vital parts and leaving a lot of little tid-bits in the hands of random generic NPCs (such as Cielo's past Persona)
. It really did clash with the rest of the games format of heavy gameplay session followed by a detailed story segment.

Peace.

Agreed. They ended it perfectly.

Well, that was never really a big issue anyway. Not really much they could show about that since he died before the black sun incident anyway. If it was handled by the NPC it was, for the most part, unnecessary to begin with. Sort of like that extra tidbit about Angel. A bit more insight into her character but it wasn't exactly something that would impact the story really.

Maybe it's just me but I thought there was always some sort of big revelation after every dungeon segment.

haha is that really the word? Any concrete proof? Meh, I guess that makes sense though. A simple enough word that humans as a society seem to forget about entirely.

I kind of feel like Zelda: TP was the finish to the OoT/MM arc. Kind of felt like a sequel to those and that was nicely wrapped up, and I also have a belief that that was the last Zelda game that will have that same sort of feel.

And Metroid Prime 3 is coming out soon, that might be nice.
