I never gave a shit about the "characters" in The Wire. That show was so sterile, clinical, and distant, that I couldn't care less how the story turned out.
Dude...

Fuck it, I'll say it: Dawson's Creek. That finale was fucking brutal. It wrecked me.

Oh.

Ronnie got a raw deal, I'm still pissed about that. He was the only member of the crew who didn't screw things up on a regular basis by mixing their personal life with business... so of course he gets the shaft.

I like to imagine that he had plenty of cash stashed away, being the type of person he was. I'm going to assume that all of that went towards a contract on Vic.

the shield season 5 spoilers
And Lem didn't get a raw deal??

Trying to think of some that haven't been mentioned and realizing how many of my favorite shows over the last decade never got finales. :(

Firefly

....:'(

Actually if you can count the last scene of Serenity as a series finale it was pretty sweet.

i haven't really watched that many tv shows all the way to the end now that i think about it

After all the hype, I was actually disappointed with that ending...just came out of fucking nowhere. If I hadn't known about it for 10 years before actually seeing it myself, I probably wouldn't have understood what had happened. :lol

The Wire. Season 5 may have had questionable elements, but the ending was truly amazing.

wha? what's there not to get?
i like how essentially the whole show builds up the inevitable (epic!) ending with all big players making their moves.
and Kamille's story coming to an tragic conclusion, during the run of the show he gets used (Char!) and abused by everyone, loses almost everyone he loves and cares for, gets consumed by war and pays the price.

pretty awesome if you ask me

Twin Peaks
The Wire
The Office UK
Life on Mars (the real Life on Mars)

Guilty Pleasures:
Battlestar Galactica (questionable finale but I still liked it quite a bit)
Lost (see above)

Haven't seen Ashes to Ashes but I heard it ended the same way Lost did. And in the same week too lol.

Rome and Arrested Development are some of my favorite shows but they both had crappy rushed endings.

Lot of TNG mentions and The Shield mentions which I totally agree with.

Not one DS9 mention though? The finale had great endings/new journeys for the characters. It actually felt like an age was ending and a new one was beginning...

Third Watch. I don't know I just like the way they tell you what happens next for all the characters. Not enough shows do this imo.

Futurama. I know they're making new episodes now, but I thought that ending was perfect.

Angel, I just loved that they way it ended felt almost like a huge "Fuck You" to the WB for canceling them.

Monk. it was great to see how different he was when he had someone he really loved in his life.

The LOST finale and the Scrubs S8 finale are my favorites. Both awesome, not sure which I like better. I did actually enjoy S9 of Scrubs but I do think of it as a spin-off. Possibly just so I can think of the S8 finale as the series finale, but anyway those are my faves.

I'm sure I speak for myself, but I feel like Ezri Dax was the moment DS9 died for me... especially after reading how her character was created in the DS9 companion (not to mention Moore's Klingon fetish, but I guess that happened much earlier).

That said, there was just a feeling of inevitability in the finale so it came off as by the book. The only surprising thing that came out of it was Sisko joining the prophets forever (or until the books brought him back anyway). They didn't even have the balls to kill of a main character to bring home the tragedy of this seemingly devastating war.

Still no Babylon 5?

Beaten so badly but yes. Sleeping in Light was the most magnificent series ending ever. Was amazing to watch a show that really and truly WAS planned out a great deal from the start. Thats really really rare, and hard for writers to stick to with actors and actresses coming and going, but B5 pulled it off, and the finale was amazing.*

Six Feet Under (Best five minutes ever)
King of the Hill (Hank and Bobby finally having a relationship made me shed a tear)

Didn't watch the finale then? i don't know how you could not care for the characters at that point.

I thought about this after the Lost series finale, and the only two shows I could come up with were The Wire and The Shield. Absolutely perfect, totally faithful to the show, and it completed the story.

When you think about it, not a lot of shows have had proper endings thanks to getting prematurely canned while others drag on past their expiration date and deliver weak endings.

Six Feet Under is probably also my favorite ending, though not my favorite show as a whole.

I'm in the camp that loved the Battlestar Galactica ending for the same reason I enjoyed yesterday's Lost finale: they were both emotionally satisfying.

The fact that only two people have said Angel is depressing.
Angel's was great but it was so bittersweet and the build-up to it was a bit too abrupt for my liking.

Prison Break Season 2, the real end of the show. Right before the introduce the hooks to artificially excuse more seasons.

Only short series like Cowboy Bebop, ROME are possible to have great endings. Long series all have bad endings.

Seinfeld, Soparnos, so much bad taste in my month!

YES finally someone that agrees, they should have
Left on the boot all together with the money and sailed away for good
THAT should have been the ending of the series!

We must not have watched the same show. :lol

The Wire also has a great ending. I wish the whole of Season 5 had been as good as the ending.

Probably a little hyperbole on my part. The Wire is a good show, it just didn't have enough character development for my tastes. I didn't feel like I got to know the characters very well.

I think the Arrested Development finale was fantastic. Sure, it covers a lot of ground quickly and some subplots in the last season get dropped, but with what they had to work with they pulled it off splendidly. I love the way it all goes full circle back to the pilot. I'd prefer that potential movie never happen. The ending is awesome as it is.

I don't know about anyone else, but I liked the NewsRadio finale. Season five as a whole sucked and ruined most of the characters, but it had a funny finale. I thought it was hilarious how Jimmy took everyone with him to New Hampshire so he wouldn't be lonely in retirement and poor Dave got stuck with Matthew forever.
Well, if NBC had picked the show up for another season everyone would have been in New Hampshire and the show would continue. It was set up to work as either a season or series finale.

The best finale of a series I've seen is Lonesome Dove. Fantastically awesome. (This may be a cheat)

LOST's is what I call the most infuriating piece of trash to ever air. Made me retroactively hate the entire series... Life is but a dream. Row, row, row your boat. Those motherfuckers.
