The Best Shooters of all time [PC GAMER]

To use ViewtifulJC's template:

What, no *Medal of Honor: Allied Assault*? *Borderlands 2* higher/lower than *Counter-Strike*!? FUCK PC GAMER

This is just as bad as PC gamer's best PC games of all time list...

Planetside 2 is a great idea but the actual game is just alright.

Because Halo and Halo 2 wasn't released on PC right?

Doesn't matter.

"PC Gamers" hate Halo because the franchise represents the death of PC gaming. Combat Evolved took away the FPS, Wars took away the real time strategy and now Space Magic Halo is stealing the MMO. All that's left to conquer are the facebook apps.

Team Fortress 2 definitely deserves top spot, no other multiplayer FPS this gen has come close to how much fun it is.

Halo wars is a bit like "baby's first RTS" so I really doubt it's a threat to PC RTS's.

Otherwise, I'm a bit conflicted about the list. It has some great games that totally deserve their spots (even games that are generally omitted from "top" lists like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.), but on the other hands, I find some of the choices really perplexing. Putting Borderlands 2 as the 5th best shooter of all time is just wrong... I also don't really get why Bioshock is on the list when it has weak gunplay. It goes against what they say their criteria were.

We’re also laser-focused on the things that make a shooter a shooter. We consider Fallout: New Vegas, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex to be must-play experiences, but do we celebrate them because they’re great shooters, or because they’re excellent story-driven games that happen to feature guns? Drawing these kinds of lines helps us provide a better service to you, we hope.
This is hypocritical bullshit.

This is hypocritical bullshit.
Exactly. I had dropped the game some months ago because I hated its gameplay, despite the story and atmosphere being top-notch. I'm started playing it again now, and while I'm appreciating it a little more, the shooting still sucks.

I think the original Deus Ex holds up and plays infinitely better than BioShock, and this is coming from someone who played both games (though I didn't get far in Bio) for the first time this year.

Eh. Bioshock skews far closer to a standard shooter than System Shock 1 or 2. Infinite even moreso.

The shooting part of the game is really average though. The game is mostly known for its atmosphere/storytelling/world/..., which is what they are talking about.

I have stalker shadow of Chernobyl, is call of pripiyat that much of an improvement?

Call of Pripyat is as much an improvement as a step backwards. It's more of a different direction altogether.

The game as a whole felt more refined than SoC when it came out, but that was before mods. Call of Pripyat feels much more constrained and smaller than CoS, but the playgrounds are very dense, almost to a fault.

SoC feels much more natural, as encounters are spaced out better, but the quest system is a bit more confusing and less straightforward than CoP.

As it goes my tier list is:

Modded SoC > Modded CoP > CoP > Clear Sky

Though I feel Clear Sky is underrated, and I actually prefer a lot of things about Clear Sky, but it was a buggy mess when it came out.

Just by listing Max Payne 3, the list is invalid....

Top shooters of all time, that also defined the genre. Sorted by release.

Wolfenstein 3D - Gave birth to the genre (not the first shooter though)
Quake - first fully polygon based shooter
Half Life - wasd, skeleton based animation, ai, story
Half Life 2 - physics,
Crysis - Lifted the FPS genre another level.

Since Crysis the fps genre have not moved an inch. Nothing in the near future that will come close yet. Sadly.

edit: Ok, I only focused on fps games in this list. I guess I should go to bed.

But I can add these then:

Max Payne (yes, the original)
-- will add more as I can think of more..

Yup, it couldn't possibly be that the ports that the PC did receive were just not that good when they were released.

Halo wars is a bit like "baby's first RTS" so I really doubt it's a threat to PC RTS's.

There's always going to PC RTS, just like how there's always going to be PC FPS, but like Combat Evolved giving birth to the modern shooter, Halo Wars introduced how to properly play a real time strategy game on the console. Real time strategy doesn't "belong" to PC anymore. That's what I meant.

"Good" is subjective. Computer gamers have very different mindset than video gamers. I'll use the RTS as an example. It's a well known fact that PC gamers love math, so titles like StarCraft focus heavily on resource management. Us cool console gamers like action, so gathering materials in games like Halo Wars takes a backseat. For people like Hypron, they see this as a flaw, and call it names like "baby's first RTS", where as I would refer to something like StarCraft as "really freaking boring". So what, they'll have theirs and you'll have yours, and I'll have mine, and together we'll be fine.

No one makes RTS games on consoles anymore. The few that do or did get released don't/didn't sell well. Halo Wars wasn't like some revelation, it got decent to good reviews and sold some copies off the halo name before MS killed ensemble. RTS absolutely still belongs to the PC.

This is some lazy-ass trolling right here. You have to try and be a little more believable.

What? Then where are all the console real time strategy games?

Based on their criteria I like the list. Some games are just not good anymore.

Also I can see why BF 1942 and BF3 are on the list I'm a newer PC gamer and I tried to play BF2 and I didn't like it at all but 1942 is awesome.

It's like the people that say AvP Gold is good. It might have been when it came out but it's pretty bad by todays standards.

List is pretty meh (wolf '09? wtf?), but could have been a lot worse given PC gamer.

Eh. Bioshock skews far closer to a standard shooter than System Shock 1 or 2. Infinite even moreso.

Except BioShock 2 obliterates BioShock 1 (and infinite, for that matter) in terms of actual shooting mechanics, so why isn't that there on a list for shooting games?

Huh, I was expecting shmups.

Welcome to the new millennium, I hope you enjoy your stay!

Yep. I just don't understand the people who seem to think having TF2 as the top spot is a joke (of course none of them are saying anything to actually defend their argument, just stupid stuff like LOL TF2 so it would be pretty difficult for anyone to understand their argument) .

TF2 has 9 diverse classes, all of which play differently. It has had over 50 maps and several new game modes added over the years all of which have been added for free (LOL paying for map packs). It's had many new weapons added for every class that has changed the way you play those classes. It has a great art style that continues to look great even though the game was released back in 2007.

Best of all it continues to receive major content updates even though the game is almost 6 years old at this point. Just today Valve posted on the TF2 blog about some of the stuff from the upcoming major content update, include fixes to most of the maps in the game and 2 new community created maps that they will be adding to the game (for free of course).

This list is about the top shooters based on shooting mechanics. It's not about genre; Far Cry 3 is a sandbox FPS game, but it's still included. Bioshock is only critically acclaimed for its story and atmosphere, which aren't supposed to matter here.

Except BioShock 2 obliterates BioShock 1 (and infinite, for that matter) in terms of actual shooting mechanics, so why isn't that there on a list for shooting games?
Because Bioshock 2 doesn't have nerd cred and Bioshock does.

It's no wonder Infinite shit all over the gameplay when Bioshock 2 got a mediocre reception for its story.

That's a rather big endorsement for Max Payne 3... I've been on the fence about it for a while but with the Steam sale coming up I'd get it for £5

edit. Wow so divisive. Now I really have to play it! (keep up the good work haters)

What a terrible terrible list.

Planetside 2 being even in the top 10, let alone top 3 of best shooters of all time is just hilarios. So is Battlefield 3 over Battlefield 2.

It's a great example of how not to incorporate story and character into gameplay. Max literally cannot climb ladders or open certain doors without taking control away from you and having him deliver a monologue. Cutscenes are unskippable until a certain point under the (false) guise of loading. It makes the game a pain to replay.

It's a great game and I absolutely love how it plays. But its forceful display of hammy delivery in the form of a plethora of unskippable cutscenes ultimately makes it hard to go back to.

...

...careful with that bow you seem to be drawing to snapping point. I don't think I've read something so bizarre in a long time. I certainly enjoyed my time with some RTT games like Endwar, RA3 and Under Siege on consoles - and even playing a ton of KKND back in the day on PSX - but don't try and create insane justifications for why things were made the way they were.

that level where you have to snipe the guy was pretty awesome you have to admit

I'll never understand the popularity of that mission.

It may have one the best TPS gunplays ever, but boy is the presentation detrimental! I couldn't finish it.
