Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Look, Tails is number 2 alright, but he ain't Blaze.

Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow are the only ones I care about. Knuckles being a completely incompetent idiot though ruins him.
Tails I like because he can fly and in sonic adventure he actually has a character arc that's sort of adorable where he learns to save the day.
Shadow is Vegeta and he has cool shoes.

06 might have been shit (shocking news to everyone) in its treatment of blaze , but so?
In rush, she's an alternate universe sonic , combined with knuckles job of protecting a set of emeralds, with pyrokinetic abilities. And she's got a emerald powered super form of her own in burning blaze. She's treated fine in any game you would actually want to play.
That game sold multiple million copies and hes still so popular, that sega jokes about how popular he is.

Call me edgy, but I love Shadow. Sonic Adventure 2 was the first Sonic game I ever played (watched cousin play the genesis games though, and loved the cartoons), and Shadow was just crazy cool as a kid. I still love his running animations.
I actually quite enjoyed Silver in 06 relative to the game he was in. The slower pace was kinda fun, and in a better game his telekinesis could be awesome.
Really, I actually just like "Sonic's shitty friends" and so it's been kinda sad to see the modern games throw them mostly to the wayside.

Apart from the A.I. in special stages, it's always been Tails.

Sonic's friends get a lot of shit, but I find a lot of them pretty fun and well-designed. Specifically, Tails, Knuckles, Blaze, Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao. The rest are all trash.

Knuckles is my favorite, then Tails, and then probably Shadow. Blaze is a great character too, probably the best out of the modern additions to the cast.
I also really like Mighty thanks to reading the Archie comics as a kid. Hell, the Knuckles comic series is why I love that character!

Oh damn, I didn't expect someone else to know the correct answer to this question.
My only real exposure to her was the comics though, so that's what I base it off of.
I'm still disappointed this will never happen.
Edit: Might as well add that as much flack Sonic's friends receive, I genuinely do not dislike a single one. But Tails and Cream are probably my least favourite, lol. Chip was also really cool, too, so I guess he'd actually be my non-promotional, "pls make Sonic the Fighters 2," answer.

Because in a show where someone like Sonic should have ruined it with his personality constantly grating on everyone she showed up to be the perfect foil to him. Tactical and a leader and most of all someone who would call Sonic out on his bullshit. Everything Sonic created in the show that would be a problem this character fixed in the dynamics. She was essentially the co star and to this day is better than any of the other friends they've ever added.
I wish they had ran with the Sonic Sat AM universe. Fucking preempted by Saturday morning football and timeslotted vs Power Rangers. Still it was so popular it STILL continues to this day in comic form. I hope Sega recognizes this someday and works out something with Archie comics so they can do a spinoff series for that universe. Sally would make one helluva good Stealth action character with all her hacking, Nicole related tech, and sneaking skills.

If this was still an era were the secondary characters actually got any use in the narrative and gameplay anymore (seriously Sega, I don't want to play as fuckin' Buddy the OC), I'd pick Shadow. Same gameplay as Sonic, extra moves and skills that are ripe for creative use, and an attitude that's satisfyingly no nonsense. No, Sonic, I don't want to race you during the alien invasion, nor do I need to use the door Eggman. He's still cool to me.
I also give Chip a shoutout for being adorable, useful, and badass simultaneously.

I think sally is the worst and should have been thrown in the trash in the comic reboot. But im glad someone likes her, seriously. Im glad you like her its interesting to hear other opinions on this

Big is fucking *Amazing* in the comics. Absolutely love the big oaf. I honestly hope he gets an episode in the next season of Sonic Boom, actually.

Shadow and Chip? Those are some contrasting answers. I personally don't like chip, but that's me, found him annoying.
I like Shadow though , I like how he gets to be kind of his own dude. I also like the no nonsense. Its kind of refreshing, especially in the comics, he's kind of this blunt asshole. Shadow strait up tells knuckles he's shitty at his job and way to gullible. And he ain't never lied.
To speak to the writing of the comic, amy then gives knuckles this very emotional and heartwarming speech about knuckles being proud of who he is and trying his best. Which you know is a good not cynical lessons for kids, when in reality shadow was still right. As cynical as it is , the master emerald would have been safer locked up somewhere.
Shadow's allowed to be a jerk and be right, particularly in the comics and its very interesting. And interesting that comic can just allow that, ussually in the comic even while trying to present something in a gray circumstance, it is because to poor writing black and white. Even knuckles and Shadow's previous encounter in the very same comic, wasn't the most well thought out thing and just kind of makes knuckles look like a dick. But this was genuinely interesting, because amy's coaching was fine, but shadow was totally right.
BUT FORGET ALL THAT SHIT, forget shadow, knuckles, amy, tails, blaze whatever dumb character you like. You know who's the best sonic friend

Kinda. She protects 7 sol emeralds, so she's closer to Knuckles.
Although it may or may not mean much because 2006 completely ignores this and she's from the future.
edit: she was, however, designed with being Sonic's equivalent in mind.
