The best traps in gaming

Guy posts Fred image. Because Fred likes traps. The thread is about traps. I wasn't referring to transgenders, if it came off that way, I apologize.

You're fine don't sweat it. It only came off that way because other people in the thread were making that off-colour type of joke and he just didn't get the Scooby Doo reference.

That red box can be smashed for loot but sometimes there's a bomb inside instead which will hurt:

Because I am not an observant player I didn't realise for a long time that Duke walks in front of real boxes and behind fake ones (or the other way round, I dunno). But those bombs were easy to avoid anyway so this was actually a pretty crap trap in the end.

Not going to speak for them, but I can see where there coming from. You can't actually have an expectation for any average person, out in the world or on the internet, to possess that knowledge. Also as for just spening time on the internet, I really don't see how that correlates to any amount of information absorbed on that topic. Where would it come up? It's certainly not a term used derisively in anime circles. I'm all for educating people, but the spread of knowledge on this subject maybe quite a smaller than you might assume.

On-Topic: Mimics from DS, but Deception IV is super good. hit em with the axe.

I mean, if they know enough to use the term, I expect them to know what they are saying. My expectations aren't for people to know the term (because the usage proportionally is rather small tbh), but for the ones who do to know what they are actually saying when they use it. I have definitely heard both terms used quite a bit, and if you use a word correctly in the derogatory sense or imply it through a picture - even if you don't mean it to be offensive, you should expect there to be some backlash for it.

I don't expect society to know better, but I do expect that of those with knowledge of the term. And to say that our expectations for society in relation to trans people, of all things, are too high definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

Mimics from Dark Souls have scarred me and forever changed how I go through action games. I slap chests in Zelda before I open them now, and I don't think I've ever run into a fake Zelda chest. Just got to be sure!

Frost's "welcome mats" aka beartraps are so fuckin' fun to place in Rainbow Six: Siege. My favorite trick is destroying a hatch in a hallway then placing them under barbed wire alongside. In three steps this creates a small choke point that ruins reckless attackers and sucks up the resources of careful ones. It's supremely effective upstairs on the map "Chalet," which incidentally has great places to hide them in plants.

P.S. Pls don't steal.

I actually feel like the mimic chests are not good traps. They get you the first time, then you spend the rest of the time whacking every chest just in case. Instead, you should have to try to open the chest to know if it's a mimic, but have enough time to react and dodge away from the mimic.

Just happened to post the "that's my fetish" reaction face and we are supposed to assume that is talking about literal scooby doo traps instead of the deragatory term. Yeah, ok, especially considering the context of that episode is referring to being excited for a mystery not traps. So with all the banned posters making similar jokes I am supposed to believe that line of reasoning and not suspect a lame attempt at a trans joke? It's not about being "sensitive" it's about respect for your fellow human being.

I'm out for real. No need to crap up the thread with this kind of thing, the mods will continue to handle it.

I seriously learned some things in this thread. Like the existence of that Deception series, which is clearly directed at an audience with a very specific fetish.

My vote for best traps goes to Sen's Fortress in Dark Souls. Top to bottom (including the chest with the Lightning Spear in it) that whole place is amazing.

I don't know who Sen was but it's unlikely he ever got anything productive done in that building.

To be fair, those traps are in newer Deception games.

Dark Souls II has this style of trap, with chests that will shoot arrows or poison at you after you open, and you have to roll away.

It's pretty cool.

Doesn't hurt anybody and we wouldn't have the discussions, we have now. Just speaking for myself what I would have done.

We'd still get them. People who don't read the OP. People who quote images from posters that are banned that still use them when they should have also read posts responding to people using them.

Welp today I learned "trap" is extremely offensive online. I've had friends call themselves that endearingly, never heard it used as a slur like "tranny" and so on.

More you know I guess. Perma-ban seems really harsh.

Anyway my vote goes to Mimicuties from Kid Icarus Uprising.

You have every right to be suspect, but in my case, I wasn't trying to be offensive. If you've watched the show, Fred has a serious, SERIOUS thing for traps (mechanical and the like). In so much that he ignores advances from Daphne, which is played up. If you don't believe me, I can understand.

The other key thing to note about Mimics is that if you wait a a few seconds a mimic chest will actually lift the top some to reveal it's eyes. It physically moves the top up to peek out at you. If the chest doesn't move it's a real chest. This is true at least in Bloodborne. I never tested in other dark/demon souls games. #simpleasthat

I never knew this! I think you can see them breathe in DS1, but didn't know they spy on you. so, where's the first mimic in DS3, was it after the dragon/drake?

Do not use trap to refer to transgender characters. Don't use it even if the character isn't. It is disrespectful and you will be banned immediately for it.

Mimics in Dragon Quest are my favorite but that's also because they're kinda lovable, in a "They're gonna critical hit you" kinda way.

I honestly can't remember the game but there was one where you'd step on a landmine and it would spring up so you'd have a second to realize how fucked you are, and kill everyone around it. I think the first time that it happens time slows down as well.

Also, the camouflaged alligators from Far Cry 3, first time that happened to me made me jump.
Sounds like a Resistance mine? Maybe I'm wrong.

Exactly, people who are saying "LET'S MAKE EVERYTHING A MIMIC!" are basically saying "let's make the player question literally EVERYTHING in this game so that in order to move from one room to another you need to double check every wall, barrel, ladder, chest, bonfire, pile of rubble, grass, stone, etc., etc." you would completely kill the flow of the game. Chest mimics are bad enough.
