On Topic
Havent played AC3 still waiting for the PC edition and the inevitable patch to make the game playable.
But as is I hold Mass Effect higher.

Since we are only couting the main AC games.

AC1, AC2 dont hold up against ME1 and ME2.

I didnt hate ME3 like some people apparently did, and I think AC3 will be a damn good game.
But because AC1 was so weak.....the Mass Effect series wins it for me.

The Shift games are not Need for Speeds, they just decided to use the branding for marketing.

I've played three and a half Ass Creed games and I still don't really understand how the controls work, and the controls still feel uncomfortable and profoundly unintuitive.

Both are pretty bad.

Story= LOL

Characters = ME because it doesn't get more bland than the chars in AC.

Gameplay = Draw, ME started off neat but turned into a typical peek-a-boo shooter while AC started awful completely terrible and has slowly gotten better but not to the point where the combat isn't a bunch of parrying and counter ftw and the hold foward platforming is snore inducing.

Sound = Draw, probably the best thing about these games. Both have some really neat soundtracks.

Graphix = They are made for consoles, Mass Effect being the better looking game but AC being held back by consoles which hurts its open world environments.

Overall = 5 Dorito Bags out of 10 for both Trilogies.

Gameplay-wise, Assassin's Creed is easily the better franchise. Mass Effects are, at best, mediocre corridor shooters with some shallow RPG ultra lite stuff thrown into the mix. Assassin's Creed games do their thing pretty well even though they are clearly catering for the masses, though it has started to get repetitive after so many games. Story-wise, I guess Mass Effect takes the pot, but only because the AC storyline is such silly nonsense.

why is the general consensus that ME1's shooting WASN'T gawdawful? did everyone just choose to forget about that when they saw that ME2 removed the RPG elements?

I had more fun playing Mass effect games, only played 1&2 and AC2 though, for me ACII could've been a lot more fun if it had better combat and more competent AIs, but at default it was incredibly boring once the novelty of exploring wears off, it basically gives you some options that result in easy kills and it really does get old fast because there isn't much effort required to pull off most of the things in the game (both stealth and combat), and enemies don't really fight back.

Though ME went into a direction I didn't care much for, like RE6 (not saying they're bad but it's not a genre I'm into).

Yeah, it was really awful, and even when improved in Mass Effect 2 is was still boring.

I think it's because so much of Altair/Ezio/Conner/Whoeverthefuck's movement and actions are automated or semi-automated. I don't even remember if they carried it beyond the first game, but those moments where Altair would be listening to someone dribble shit for three minutes and you could move, but only like 3 steps in one direction and if you went on the wrong angle you'd just freeze up... god, I wish they would have just made it a cutscene. And even after marathoning AC1 in the buildup to AC2 and playing through to the end of AC2, I was still constantly fucking up jumps and climbing on shit that I didn't mean to.

The first Mass Effect was pretty cool, but the series sort of lost me after that. The combat got technically better I think, but it was sort of the same thing over and over again. And BioWare never really got me truly invested into the Mass Effect universe. Which seems like a huge missed opportunity since there's some pretty cool background lore and I'm a massive sci-fi fan. And then of course they completely shit the bed at the end of the trilogy with that ending.

With Assassin's Creed, the first game had a lot of problems, but I thought II and Brotherhood were fantastic. They did a great job of drawing me into the world, and it's just a lot of fun traversing all the different historical cities with all the equipment and techniques they give you. And the games are packed with content. They've had some pretty interesting side quests and activities (unlike Mass Effect) that are fun to get into.

So overall, I've enjoyed Assassin's Creed a lot more. Though that's not to say the series is blemish-free. Far from it. The combat feels a bit mindless at times, and the main story is pretty fucking weird. The stuff that focuses on each assassin from the past is all pretty cool. They do a great job of depicting all the different cities and time periods. It's just that when it starts crossing over with and connecting to the modern day Desmond stuff it all gets a bit too crazy for my tastes.

Mass Effect because I enjoy the characters, universe and gameplay more.

Uncharted.

Assuming we're only counting AC1 and AC2 I'd say ME is the better series. I enjoyed AC1 but it was a worse game than ME1 and I think I enjoyed ME2 about as much as AC2 (I didn't start to really like Ezio until Brotherhood).

Interestingly enough I have no interested in the third game of either series. I don't care for the setting in AC3 and hearing the reaction to ME3 makes me think my time is better spent elsewhere.

Uncharted.

Compared to these two series, Uncharted is better, but not by much. If you put all the 2's against each other I don't see how anyone could argue UC doesn't win. 3's seem to be equally bad.

-So Assassin Creed 1 is a piece of utter boring shit, horrible game in is whole entirity.
-Assassin Creed 2 and Brotherhood are both amazing
-Assassin Creed Revelations is normal, only the ending and the scenes with Ezio and Sofia save the game from mediocrity.
-Havent bought yet AC3 (lol no PC yet, waiting now for a steam sale).

-Mass Effect 1 is amazing
-Mass Effect 2 is really good
-Mass Effect 3 is excellent, but the ending, and final parts, fuck up the entire saga.

So the standouts are in black.
Mmmm, decission, decissions...

I like MUCH more the majority characters of Mass Effect than Assassin Creed. But Ezio is awesome, I also like Sofia, Shaun and Rebecca. Both have also horrible characters.
I suppose at the end, I like more Mass Effect.

  • Third Hexalogy
NFS: Shift

Shift 2: Unleashed
NFS: The Run
NFS: Most Wanted - aka NFS:13 (Criterions counting strikes back, im curious which NFS games they dont count?)

Because it really is Criterion who decides what counts and what doesn't, right?

Counting NFS World, and bundling the Criterion, Black Box and Slightly Mad stuff together doesn't seem like the way to go, since they have nothing to do with each other.

You also forgot NFS: Nitro.
I'd agree with the first two hexalogys, but right now it's all over the place.

For me it's assassins creed, mass effect always came off as a Star Trek impersonator. I like me2 but I never finished 1 or 3 due to not really wanting to explore the world anymore. Then again I am a history buff so a creed would win by default.

As trilogies, they're pretty terrible.

Now, when it comes to standalone installments, I think Assassin's Creed II and Mass Effect 1 are amazing. I like Mass Effect 2 and Assassin's Creed 1, but disliked Mass Effect 3 and from the sounds of things Assassin's Creed III may also fall into this category but I won't know until I play it.

I can say that they're both incredibly uneven with high and low points, which, in turn, makes them just about even.

They're both middling in a lot of ways, but I'm going with Assassin's Creed for actually doing exploration right and doing far more interesting things with its settings.

RPG is my favorite gaming genre, and sci-fi is my favorite speculative fiction genre, so Mass Effect should have been right up my alley. But no. The series was a massive missed opportunity in so many ways.

I'd give it to Mass Effect.

If we're doing arbitrary rankings:

Assassin's Creed II>Mass Effect>Mass Effect 2>Assassin's Creed Brotherhood>Mass Effect 3>Assassin's Creed>Assassin's Creed Revelations

Haven't played III yet.

How you guys can forgive AC1 is beyond me? I know a lot of people hated ME3, but it wasn't the snoozefest that was AC1. That destroys any merit to it being a better faux trilogy.

Mass Effect. Loved the first 2, never finished the third one.

AC 1 was boring, AC 2 was ok. Haven't played the others.

So Mass Effect.

I don't think AC1 is quite as bad as people make it out to be. Someone said it on here in another thread I think, don't remember who but they hit the nail on the head in terms of the AC games: they're really great atmospheric/immersive experiences. Not so great on the gameplay or variation side of things, but IMO they're really easy to get absorbed into. I felt this way about AC1 despite it being a low point of the series.

Mass Effect 3 on the flipside killed my interest in the entire series but to be fair the seeds were planted in ME2.

I think they just forgot.

AC1 is repetitively dull to the point of being offensive. It goes for so fucking long given how much actual gameplay there is, and after you've been to each city once the game just fucking loops twice more to make up the 9 assassinations. The sequels have been desperately adding more variety to spice up the gameplay, with varying levels of success, but goddamn.

BONUS VIDEO FUCK YOU ASSASSINS CREED 1

Probably the same reasons people can forgive tripe like ME1. It spoke to them on some nebulous level.

At least Mass Effect managed to keep the main storyline interesting until the very end of the third game, AC's overarching Desmond story was already convoluted and uninteresting by Brotherhood.

It's a tough call.

Both series launched with a promising but deeply flawed first entry, and were followed by sequels that made a lot of small improvements across the board but never managed to reach the potential they had. If I had to choose, I'd go with Mass Effect since it's shooter/RPG blend is a bit more up my alley. The first one had lousy pacing at times, but overall the series kept me engaged from start to finish. Assassin's Creed is always fantastic from a superficial standpoint, but it's hallow inside. The last one I played was Brotherhood and it was a beautiful but bloated slog. Like a supermodel with no soul or personality, she's great to look at but completely boring to spend time with. Of course, Mass Effect is far from deep or ambitious from a gameplay standpoint, but it never feels quite as dull as Assassin's Creed.
