"The Bible" - History Channel - Mini Series

Not open for further replies.
this series was filmed in Morocco.

The producers said every day they had to clear snakes out from the set. The crucifixion scene apparently has a cross on the ground and each day filming there were about 50+ snakes over the cross. Scary!

It's a sign. Or something.

Also they didn't remove his siblings, they just deny it, but those siblings are still there in the text.

I actually didn't know Catholics denied that Jesus had siblings. I mean, the epistle of James was written by the brother of Jesus.

Anyway, I may see if there's a rerun of the first episode. I don't like the claims of inaccuracy though, because that will annoy me.

Also aligns with what the Bible says about Jesus in Isaiah 53:2 "There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him."

The traditional, long haired, blue-eyed, fair skinned Jesus was always man made.

That's what always confused me about him when I was a kid. I guess that look for him isn't going away anytime soon.

They don't believe Jesus had full blood brothers/sisters.

My family had this on tonight when I visited my mom's house. Anybody else find that it's really uncomfortable watching something like this with religious people? It's hard for me to hold my tongue watching something like Abraham being willing to kill his son and basically being praised for it. Even though it's not real, the messages and morals are so appalling.

Even my mother was saying things like "Wow, God sure likes to kill people, doesn't he?" and "Really? God turned the poor woman to salt just because she looked back?"

I had to leave on purpose before God decided to murder every first born in Egypt.

I don't understand how someone could watch a show like this and not instantly lose their faith.

As an ex-Catholic I've only learned this recently, Catholcism teaches nothing of Jesus's siblings.

They believe she was a perpetual virgin, because ya know, immaculate conception isn't enough.

They also believe she was taken up to Heaven body and soul. It's called the Assumption of Mary. Even though no where in the Bible, not even non-canonical stuff or even the nutty stuff like Gnostic gospels written 2 centuries after Jesus's death, talk about this.

I'm protestant so I never really knew that, which is interesting. I always believed he had brothers/sisters, I never believed he had a wife though - which Jackson already covered.

That's slightly laughable lol

They also believe she was taken up to Heaven body and soul. It's called the Assumption of Mary. Even though no where in the Bible, not even non-canonical stuff like Gnostic works 2 centuries after Jesus's death, is there written evidence for this.

The Bible goes against that entire concept about Mary being anything special (in terms of being a saint or demigod of some sort) to begin with. It's just not the fact that the concept doesn't exist, but it directly conflicts with how Mary (or anyone who is used by God) is treated theologically within the text.

Happens all the time in mythology.

Clement of Alexandria Stromateis 5. 109.2
"But mortals seem to have given birth to the gods
to have their garb (estheta), voice (phone), and form (demas).
...
Now if horses or oxen or lions had hands
or the power to paint and to make the works that men make,
then each one would represent their gods in painting and sculpture with the same bodies
and forms as each one possesses...."

Clement of Alexandria Stromateis 7 .22: The Greeks give their gods human passions as well as human shape; and even as each race of men depict their forms like their own --in the words of Xenophanes: The Ethiopians say that their gods are snub-nosed and black,
the Thracians that theirs have gray (glaukous) eyes and red hair.

Death, destruction, illness, corruption, crime, and injustice are all around us.
The Bible isn't a book of fairies and pixie dust, it's of real life.

It's written by God as an instructional of even the most hard-hearted soul.

Just think, if some scenes are too graphic in the Bible for you, then it sure will get to those who can handle it.

Interesting

Good luck on NeoGAF.

In this world, everyone has to relate to the Bible, be given a chance to get saved.

If the Bible is all good, with little slaps on the wrist for punishment, how will it get to those that are in much more "sin" than you in your life?

Wait, what?

That's slightly laughable lol

Is it honestly more laughable than walking on water, magic touch cures for anything and resurrection?

You could of course believe Jesus was a master conman but it seems more plausible the authors liked to add some fantasy so why blame them for doing the same and promoting Mary to some demigod. I don't mind it because it resulted in so much art with women as the main subject.

There's a lot of debate over which James wrote the Epistle of James.

Yeah, I won't deny that. As far as I know, most assume it is James, brother of Jesus. Still, the siblings of Jesus are mentioned within the text, even if the James who wrote the Epistle is not the brother of Jesus.

The doctrine of perpetual virginity is a very tightly held tradition among Catholics and many other flavors of orthodox Christianity.

I think I've heard of perpetual virginity, actually. I just never linked that with the fact that Jesus had siblings (I don't believe in perpetual virginity so that's most likely why I never thought about it).

I was more or less going with the fact that the text never mentions anything about Mary deciding to stay a virgin forever - the fact that the siblings are mentioned in the text is something that goes against it. It's just something I find weird to add when there is nothing within the text that implies perpetual virginity. With that said, I meant no offense to it. I just found it odd.

I learned a lot from the part where god sent bears to feast on 42 children for making fun of a bald guy.

I'm not sure I'm reading this correctly. Do you want to maybe restate that?

That wasn't his criticism. It isn't just that there is death, destruction, illness etc. in the bible, it's that much of this is sanctioned/supported by god or done personally by him.

Always have a hard time with this one. I'm the only atheist in my family and my mom is constantly trying to convince me to 'let God into my life'. Yet, whenever I tell her that God was basically a douche in the old testament, she has no rebuttal. Just the whole, 'God works in mysterious ways' bs answer. It's not worth arguing or debating over, but she still brings it up so much. I just have to walk away from it too.

Right. He was supposed to be really average. I think Diogo Morgado is too pretty to be Jesus.

I'll restate it, I believe the Bible is the "User Manual" for life.

If you want to know the purpose for your life, for why you live day in and day out, the Bible is a great start. This isn't Disney Land, and I believe the producers don't want to sugar coat what the Bible teaches.

They want to be true to the events while not being true to the authors and actual makeup of the people in the book. Ok.

Would you say the Bible is more of a rulebook or a set of guidelines?

Most people here are non-religious so some will likely quote/respond to some things you may say (like the bible being a life manual, written by god, etc.) in the hopes of getting into a debate. There is a christian thread though if you haven't checked it out yet.

(edit - Nevermind apparently you signed up in 2011 so I'm sure you know this already.)

I actually saw this exact picture for the first time recently at a Lutheran Church during my grandmother's funeral. I almost burst out laughing in spite of myself because he looked so ridiculous.

Personally, my purpose in life is to pursue my passions, bring joy to other people's lives on a daily basis, and leave the world a little better off than I found it. I don't need a book full of outlandish and contradictory claims about the universe and humanity's place in it to tell me how or what to think.

Also, the Bible is a terrible guide to life in this or any other age. Condoning child abuse and murder? Condemning healthy or neutral aspects of sexuality, including masturbation and homosexual relations? Prescribing brutal punishments for minor crimes? Recommending arbitrary dietary and behavioral restrictions? Thanks but no thanks.

So all the parts of the bible are intended to be used as a "user manual" for life?

On a slightly more on-topic question:

How do you feel about your sacred texts being peddled for advertising revenue?

This is me.

My 'rule book' for life is simple as hell and stolen from a tv show: If nothing you do matters, all that matters is what you do.

A user manual that says you should kill your children if you think God tells you to. Must be a user manual on how to be an evil piece of shit human being.

I feel nothing, I don't know anything about what they do with the money consumed by this series.

I may actually start going into the Christian thread. I have purposely avoided topics involving Christianity on forums because, from past experience, it usually doesn't do much good but I wouldn't mind discussing a thread full of Christians where there can be discussion based on theological concepts within Christianity.

Yep. Golden Rule is all you need, regardless of whatever religion (or not) you were brought up.

The Bible seems more like a dated text in terms of some of the lessons it teaches. It might be useful to use to figure out how people lived back then but we live way cushier lives these days that we don't need to follow all the crazy rules that they probably needed to stay alive back in the day.

I don't have any special connection to the Bible beyond a piece of literature so I'm undoubtedly completely missing the point but as a work of fiction I honestly think the Mary glorification is a vast improvement and adds some credibility to the entire Angel delivering God sperm event, surely it has to come with other magic powers beyond getting impregnated.

But I mainly appreciate boobs and tight waists.
