The Bionic Commando Rearmed Official Thread of SUPPPAHHHH JOE!

So at first I didn't like this game, but then I did some co-op.

Really fun stuff although I wish there was a life indicator of some sort on the screen (quite possible that I missed it, was playing on a crappy quality projector). The boss that surrounds you and shoots spikes from all directions requires some pretty awesome coordination. Hopefully the Co-op stuff carries over to single player, don't want to have to start over ;[.

Man I have a bad feeling about the sales of this. My 100 person friends list, entirely populated by gamers old enough to have played BC back in the day, maybe 4 have bought it. Whats really nuts is the crazy amount of people playing those shitty Fable 2 pub games.

This better not bomb.

Free is good and there is virtual money to be made.

Been the opposite with my friends list, looks like you need new friends :lol

Downloaded the PSN demo and now I want to buy. There is a chance in the next few minutes my head will have exploded and one of my fingers clicked the buybutton.

I never played Bionic Commando though.

The music has a lot of bass. I was getting worried about my new set of speakers, a strange vibrating crunch noise was fixed by relocating my sub. This game gives your subwoofer something to do :) Snakeball and Novastrike are other excellent examples of games that knows bass.

Played for four hours tonight. Excellent game, definitely worth your 10 bucks.
I'm really impressed by the overall quality. They've really done something special.
And I love love love the character designs.

Finally beat challenge level 10!

Gowans (and anyone else who was stuck): you probably worked out the route. You have to be swinging between the two lower blocks and firing straight up when you pass the block in the middle.

I grabbed on to the top-left of the left-hand block (presumably the top-right of the right-hand block would work). There wasn't much rope in the grapple arm either, so there was just enough time after letting go to fire up and catch the top middle block.

I think the way I did it was to pull myself up onto the left block, fall off the right side, and grab the top left. Anyway, good luck!

:D :D :D finally someone.

Thanks Alisdair I'll try this when I get back tonight.

Loving it. It's *amazing* how well they remade Bionic Commando. All the core aspects are intact, and nothing feels wrong or out of place, but there's also so many new and improved elements.

Has to be one of the best remakes ever, for sure.

I tried the demo first, but I was already convinced this was gonna rock so I bought it after a few minutes. I totally agree with EviLore, it feels just right on every level.

This is the opinion of someone who has never played the original Bionic Commando. The controls feel really really archaic and sort of just weak. Is there something I'm missing because I never played the original? Is there no duck shooting? I think I have to be missing something. If I can get control down I think I'll really enjoy it but it feels strange to me.

I totally agree. I think Grim / Capcom are setting a new standard for the quality that remakes have to meet. With download services now available across all platforms, the possibilities for more $10-20 remakes of classic games is limitless!

I've cleared 16 Challenge Rooms so far. How's everyone else doing? It's really amazing how well designed the Challenge Rooms are. They actually make you learn parts of the mechanic that you might otherwise never realize normally, and that in turn makes playing the normal game MUCH easier. :D

I've only played a handfull of the challange rooms so far, but yeah, I thought the same thing while playing it yesterday. You definitely improve your bionic arm handling when playing them, which of course makes it smoother in the regular game. Then again, some of the rooms can be quite hard.

I'm stuck on the final level, the "outside" part. I'd say this level might be a bit too long, and should have been split into 2 :|

I'm guessing you got it for PC? Which DD service did you go through?

I used Gamersgate, their DRM doesn't seem to be as draconian as D2D's. No problems.

Evildude. Since you have the PC version, could you be so kind to answer two questions for me?

1. The game has no Vync settings but you can force Vsync through windows, can you confirm this?
2. This game has no Anti Aliasing, correct? Is it still sharp, is it super jaggy?

I can't wait till I can get my hands on this game. That's not going to be until Monday afternoon though, since I won't be home this weekend ..bah! Oh well, it's been fun reading all the positive impressions though. I sure hope this game does well, I would really appreciate a sequel/prequel/side-story for this!

I have never heard of paynova and my paypal account is out of date. Might have to read about paynova in the morning, when i'm not half asleep, or get off my ass and fix my paypal account.

Curse steam for not having it, using my cc was so easy.

I haven't been doing them straight through because I just want to get back to the game every time I try to do the challenges. I did 1-12, 15, 20, and 30.

Regarding the PC version, does it have online co-op or is it lan based only?

If its lan based i'm guessing something like hamachi would allow you to play it online, which would be kickass.

You can force both options through your drivers, regardless of the in-game settings.

Forcing vsync really screws with my copy of the game, for some reason. Lots of framerate thrashing until I've been in an area for about a minute (and then it's a perfect 60 FPS). I haven't seen any other reports of this yet so I guess it's something specific to me.

I just bought the PS3 version, rather than waste even more time troubleshooting it.

How are the controls?
You can remap the keyboard or use any gamepad. If you've played 2D games on the PC during the 90's you'll have no problem playing it with a keyboard. If not, just go with your favourite gamepad.

Only local multiplayer.

I haven't felt the urge to buy Xbox 360 until recently, but since the new 360 is coming out any day/week/month now (was it Jasper?), I guess I'm waiting for that to hit the shelves. And as for the PS3, well, I just don't see the point in buying one yet. Not that many games screaming for my attention. Oddly enough, I always thought it was going to be the other way around. That PS3 would interest me more, but with the great deal of intriguing games coming out for the 360 (including XBL), it's turning out to be a pretty interesting console. Thing is though. A lot of 360 games hits PC as well, so why would I need a 360 anyway?

Ah the choices. I guess I'll have to buy both in a month or two. But I have so many PC games I'd like to play first since I just upgraded. And don't even get me started on all the DS games I need to buy -_-

Play your PC games first and then decide. Either system is great but both would be awesome :)

Neither. Everybody has to play it on the same monitor.

I bought the game for PSN due to the PS3 d-pad, but the XBLA version of this game looks WAY better graphically on my TV (both are connected via HDMI). Anyone else notice that?
This is a perfect chance for you to adjust your TV properly! I have spent a lot of time calibrating my display and the end result is that the game looks almost 100% identical on both systems. If you look at direct feed shots you can see this as well. There should be absolutely no difference between the two if they are both being displayed properly. If you see a difference, you'll know that the input for either your PS3 or 360 is improperly adjusted.

Wow, the challenges are great. Just completed around 30 of 'em, I'll do the rest after I finish the game. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

After 100 tries on "14 - The Cliffhanger" i finally made it. Ok, so I'm starting to see why Bionic Commando is awesome :D Some of these stages require top notch timing. And I love the huge bosses, the MAMA reminds me a bit of metal slug.

Game is great value, feels good to know I pulled the MS points trigger on a real winner. Less fun is seeing my success percentages in some of these challenges...:lol

Yep I definitely notice that. The X360 version has slightly better image quality on my 1080p (calibrated, although not professionally) set. I wouldn't say way better though, but it does look slightly sharper, for e.g. the menu looks sharper and area 1's barbed wire above the chain fence has better definition compared to the PS3 version. It's not a big deal though.

Great game - is there a specific level order that's best? I tried searching, and also tried gameFAQS. It looks as if the level sequence here is different from the NES version (which I missed out on)?

Playing the 360 version with my arcadeinabox arcade stick, by the way. It's great with a stick.

Great game so far. I'm really impressed. The only complaint I have is that you can't see how many lives you have left. But then again its also nice to see a game where lives are actually LIVES, unlike in Mario Galaxy.

on the 360 version hit the back button and it will pull up your inventory which lists how many lives you have left.

damn this game is hard....kickin' my ass so far

Yeah wow, I loaded it up when I got home and at the difficulty select screen thought "Man, I've beaten the NES game multiple times before, might as well throw this sucker on Hard Mode." I'm actually finding it Harder then the NES game at points :lol . The fact that the enemies can shoot diagonally screwed with me at first. Then it was that 3 shots can kill you (homage to the original?) which was slightly painful since you can't (or at least I haven't yet discovered how to) increase your life bar (don't tell me if you can, I want to figure it out :D). That limited life makes all of the spike pits insta-kills instead of 2-3 hit kills, and I have yet to find the health potion (I assume it’s in this game!). Then the "Close Combat Soldiers" caused me some trouble since I can't relieably kill them before they get to me. If this game didn't have infinite continues I'd accuse it of being "Nintendo Hard". Thank god for those.

Seriously though, this game is spectacular. The retro music, style, and even difficulty are awesome. The addition of secrets per level (and a counter so you know how many you missed) are great, and make me want to go back and just explore everything. The change to the rocket launcher kind of bummed me out at first (Splash damage!?!), but just added another layer of strategy to using it. Also, the bosses thus far (Just beat the Sewage Plant) are great, although that boss in the Sewers took me a solid 30-40 minutes of re-trying to beat. Only having 3 hits on him is brutal, and I'm convinced that his attacks are sped up for Hard. Either that, or Grin expects everyone to have some quick reflexes on him (and if so Grin, you rock.) And lastly, the Challenge rooms are great amounts of fun. I've only done the first 8 (after I spent and hour alone trying to get the best time I could on the first 8 levels, I just decided to skip the rest and try them later from the main menu after unlocking them, otherwise I'd never freaking beat this game).

This game is pure action-ey goodness. I almost called in sick to work today so I could keep playing.

I want to play, but I am not confident of the trophies being retroactive. I've played the demo stage over again, but won't progress past that until the trophy patch appears. I got burned a bit by the Uncharted thing, and don't want it to happen again. The save files aren't locked, and the wording of the dev responses so far doesn't convince me that these awards are being tracked by your profile. I mean, I doubt I'll want to beat the game on Super Hard more than once. ;) PEACE.

EDIT: Oh, can you get medals on easy?

Absolutely agree. The original is easily one of my favorite games ever, and Rearmed is like a dream come true. My only real complaint is the load times on the 360 version, which makes frustrating re-tries even more frustrating. Otherwise, I'm having a total blast, and have had no issues using the analog stick - any deaths have been my fault, not the game misinterpreting my inputs.

There are so many little details here that really impress me. The effects for the upgraded shotgun - not just muzzle flash and smoke, but tons of sparks that hang in the air - look fantastic, and the explosions shame most full-blown retail titles.

I just finished 1-32 of the challenges. I can't beat the secret challenge stage I found though. After hundreds of tries, there is one jump I can't figure out.

I think that is the result of the scaling. I'm running on a 768p Kuro and the two look exactly the same in terms of image quality as do screenshots. Neither game is using anti-aliasing and both run at 1280x720. You have your 360 upscaling to 1920x1080 which seems to produce a slightly different image than when the TV upscales by itself.

When testing various 1080p displays I did notice that the 360 handled upscaling better than most televisions did so that is probably where the difference is stemming from. You should try setting your 360 to 720p and seeing if there are any differences.

Was playing on PS3 last night and got to the first set of challenge rooms. Then I was checking the first stage overall leaderboard. I was scrolling down quickly and it hard-locked my system. Had to press the power button on the front.

Anybody else run into this?

BTW, I played it for another couple hours after rebooting it with no problems. Still loving it. I want to marry the challenge rooms.

Apparently Xbox World UK gave the game a 4/10 (or the equivalent, according to Metacritic). Would love someone who has access to post an excerpt. I have a feeling it's another "they should have added a jump button" review. :lol So not the point of BC.

I just read this review. It's completely ridiculous. Guy writes the original Bionic Commando wasn't a good game in the first place and that he doesn't like the level design because its too difficult. Then he writes for a remake its not overhauled enough. Probably has never heard of the 3D Bionic Commando that is in the works...

I think xbox world uk is the one with the "halo 4" exclusive on the cover. Yea right :lol

Has anyone on here FOUND BOTH SECRETS in AREA 3? I'm convinced one of them doesn't exist.

You're probably missing the one outside.

I don't recall the exact positioning, but near the top of the level on the far right side, shoot a rocket at the ceiling. This will set off some kind of chain reaction wall destruction. Go back down and you will find a door.

This game is so good, especially for $10. I said wow. Has anyone else seen some pretty bad screen tearing in the FSA bases though, on the 360 version? Do you think that could be fixed with a patch/update?
Also, I really suck at video games. First I die over 150 times in GTA IV, now I'm failing missions over and over again in Bionic Commando Rearmed. I'm having trouble with Area 06, specifically.

Unfortunately devs almost never patch their games to fix technical issues such as tearing and framedrops. You can count the patched games on one hand, if even that probably.

Okay... how the hell do you do the 9th challenge room (the stairstep one). I've tried that thing like 40 times now and can't figure it out.
