The build quality of the PS4 is horrible

Best designed I agree with, build quality is lacking a bit however, it really does feel like PS2.0, which isn't as sturdy as PS3.

Yeah but FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS

Haven't had any noisy issues on my side for the ps4. No idea why people are complaining about how it feels when they pick it up... It's a stationary object.

The DualShock 4 has amazing build quality compared to the Xbox One controller.

The XBO controller feels a lot cheaper, it rattles when it's shook or vibrates and the face buttons clack when they're pressed, whereas the DS4 doesn't.

I agree with this. From what I can tell, its because the XBO controller has a unibody construction that snaps together and allows far too much flex. It literally "creaks" during hard use (even worse than the shoddy DS3 creaks). This is the main reason why its a step down from the 360 controller which feels much more solid to me.

The DS4 uses screws to hold the top and bottom halves together, similar to the 360 controller. So thats probably why they both feel solid with very little flex or creaking.

Edit: The one caveat to this is that a lot of people report the DS4 stick rubber coming off completely and/or the triggers sticking and creaking. I haven't had this problem on my launch controllers myself, but it does seem to be common. I think Sony quietly updated the rubber on a controller revision that no longer has this issue.

If it's on a completely flat surface it doesn't do that. When I have it in my TV cabinet it doesn't wobble. Looking at it right now I can see all sides are touching the surface. When I put it on my desk it wobbles and the left side and back right are suspended in the air a little if you look closely. The 3 rubber feet are in those areas, and shaped that way, for a reason. It lines up perfectly on a flat surface.

Well, mine certainly does. On a completely flat surface and still does it.

Why would they have 2 ugly rubber feet visible on the top of their console (when standing vertically)?

They made it the way it is because it looks better and functionally there's no difference at all unless you're OCD and push down your console all day. That's got nothing to do with "cutting corners".

Can't believe people still think it's a flaw of some kind.

Whatever.

OG PS2 managed it ;)

It's a flaw if aesthetic overcomes function, imo. A minor flaw but a flaw nonetheless.

Sony really dropped the ball here, the PS4 may be the most powerful current gen system but you wouldn't think it by looking at the console and controller. My biggest issues is with the DS4 and how the triggers creak and the analogues wear out quickly. The console itself is made with creaky plastics and the disc drive isn't smooth when it comes to inserting and ejecting a disc. I've already got a problem where when when insert a disc the machine struggles to suck the disc in. My wii u on the other hand is smooth for both. Didn't Sony invent the damn disc format? Why did they use the shittiest drive of all time on their premier console?

I like the system a lot, but it's built like garbage and Sony should have spent a few extra bucks making a more robust console and controller.

You are on fire with your Wii U :D

Well, I disagree. I own all three consoles and to me the stronger one is the PS4 followed by my Xbone and then the WiiU, that looks and feel like a fragile toy to me.

The Xbone has a subjectively bad/lazy design, but relatively speaking an objectively better build quality than the PS4.

Yeah I don't share the annoyance with that but its like when you get a ding in your car and you dwell on it. Someone tells you not to worry since no one will ever notice and you say "but I know its there!"

Exactly. It's really not an issue, but I guess I'm the sort of person who, once I know it's there, I can't 100% let it go ;)

Maybe it was intentional (as someone pointed out maybe it was so no feet visible at the top when verticle?) but I don't buy that personally. And even if it was, another solution could have been found.

Back on topic, it's not really an indication of bad quality. There are other things which I think are lacking in the quality dept. though.

Why are you constantly touching your console? I never even touch mine. Even ejecting disks and powering off the system... I use the controller for that.

Also, the controller creaks a LOT less than the Dualshock 3. Pick up a DS3 sometime and it feels like a kids toy compared to the DS4.

I'm not. Read back the thread.

And I don't think it's really an issue worth worrying about and not indicative of quality. I'm just replying to someone saying the 'wobble' doesn't exist.

Thought PS4 was fine when I first had it. The only problems I had were Wifi and Controller battery. Once Sony fix those, I'll be happy as a clam.

Well, precisely one year into its lifetime, my DualShock 4's R1 button started sticking. I guess it was all that melee'ing in Destiny.

So I got in touch with Sony:

...which didn't exactly work out well.

Fortunately, the DS4 isn't that hard to open up:

I cleaned out the R1 connecting joints, which seemed to fix the problem. However, there are these super fiddly trigger springs on R2/L2 that are (a) easily dislodged/lost and (b) super tricky to put back in their place:

However, after some spring wrangling I was able to get everything back together successfully. All's well that ends well and I now have a functional R1 button again.

360s build quality was horrible. The first batch of PSOnes were horrible. The DREs of the PS2s was suspect.

The PS4 build quality is far from horrible.

Mine is quiet, and I've had no issues with it.

Recently inspected a friend's PS4.

A lot of cheap plastics. Seems like Sony tried to minimize plastic usage by stuffing everything in one box and using some thin grade plastic. Everything just creaks including the console itself when you pick it up.

Hey, it works, and it sells well. Isn't that the only thing people care?

I'm waiting for a revision before I pick one up.

Lol it creaks when you pick it up. If u were my friend I'd kick you for picking up my ps4...i haven't picked up my ps4 since launch day.

.

Makes sense...

The creaking comes from the quarter-panels (the reddish part). Mainly the right side, but the left side is developing as well. *creak* creak*

I blame both build-quality and design.

Well it's no original ps3, I'll give you that.

That thing was built like a brick shithouse, made the original 360 look positively cheap.

I care more about the engineering that went into fitting everything in a small package. The competition is a joke in that regard. Who cares if the plastic shell is cheap? Are you fondling your PS4 instead of playing games?

The biggest design flaw is Sony's love for capacitive buttons. It was annoying on the original PS3 but is downright faulty on the PS4.

Like many others I had the "always ejecting" error. Turns out the heat from the console was expanding the rubber foot at the front, which was nudging the super sensitive eject button. I pulled out the foot and it's been fine since.

Yeah im not crazy about it either. The plastic looks and feels cheap, the controller batteries are always dead, the fan is ridiculously loud, not impressed.

I was worried about it before I got one, but it is so far, so good for me. However, I am more impressed with my Xbox One in terms of the controller, OS, the updates and how it's quiet and built like a tank.

I don't own one, but I heard similar complaints. Considering it's true, then I don't think it's incompetence, but the consequence of Sony's big financial crisis as a whole company.

It doesn't feel particularly premium to me, but it just sits under my TV all the time. It's not like a phone that I have to hold all the time. Then I'd probably be way more put off by squeasiness and cheap plastics.

Couldn't agree more. As long as it doesn't break I'm ok with it not feeling premium.

Why would it need another point?

It looks fucking ace.

Agreed.
And a few of my friends that have noticed my PS4 thought it was a great looking piece of hardware and went out of their way to comment on it. Anecdotal but the first time anyone's ever said anything about a console I've owned.

It's sexy as hell, so....why not?!!

Mine seems adequate so far. All I want from a console is for it to not overheat or have its electronic components fail under normal usage; some creak in the casing and a bit of wobble don't bother me too much.

ehrm no, there's no contest in that regard, the XB1 controller quality is much better than the DS4, just take a look at the sticks

I'm happy.

My PS4 never leaves my entertainment stand, so how it acts when picking it up doesn't matter. I rarely eject or insert discs, but when I do it's fine.

I had a few DS4 units with the rubber nub issue but the replacements feel a lot better. I can't think of a single console gen that hasn't had controller issues though, so it's not a shock.

ehrm, no, there is no contest, sorry. I have both in my hands right now and I can confirm the Xbone controller is not on par with the DS4.

Anyway, everybody have something to complain for (with good reasons of course), but most of the complain are based on their own experience. I mean, my Ds4 have literally zero problems (and I own it from the day one) even I threw it against the wall. Both the sticks are perfect!
Same for the other controllers, so I think it's just me that I use properly all these stuff :D

Its pretty bad relative to the Wii U console and the XB1 but the internals make up for it. Yeah I wish the controller had the premium feel of the XB1 controller and better presence the Wii U and Xbox one have in person. But I would have rather the XB1 had better specs than a 100 million dollar controller.

I'm pretty sure it isn't considering they even bothered to do a custom "yeah, we make pc components, look at this sick shit" drive instead of taking a random off-the-shelf drive and put it in.

Is that really the inside of the drive? It looks like two people facing each other with a ball in between their hips.

Yeah. That's very subjective there. I think personally the build quality and feel of the XB1 controller are unrivaled. I love the DS4 too but opinions are just that. Opinions.
