The Callisto protocol is a hidden Gem Now

Still the biggest disappointment this gen (with Hellblade II coming close second).

No amount of patching will fix the terrible story, boring and one-dimensional characters and lame attempts at being scary. But hey, at least it looks great, right?
This game actually has fun gameplay and shooting mechanics, unlike Hellblade 2 which stripped out all of the actual sword play from the first game and put it on rails.

It plays fine in locked 30fps

Wait, I thought this was under the pro enhanced games list?
As it has dynamic resolution it's received a boost so the IQ is better now.
Sony thought you wouldn't notice that it hasn't received a patch as that's actually more then patch games get anyway

On a serious note, not everything listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced actually has a Pro Patch yet.

Callisto no longer has the pro enhanced tag on the store. It did before because it was supposed to be one of the titles getting a day one patch, but it was delayed and thus the tag removed.

Brazil Pixel did some tests on this and the resolution is way higher in the 60 fps mode thanks to dynamic resolution. It hits 4k more often than not. At least during gameplay. Cutscenes are still around 1440p but still higher than before.

Probably the same for the 30 fps mode. Shame they didnt unlock the framerate for the 30 fps mode but i doubt it hits 60 anyway with all those rt effects.

Have always appreciated your coverage of the game! I bought it on both PC and PS5 as I enjoyed it that much!

I knew it! The RT mode looks so extremely sharp now! And 30fps is super solid just like driveclub.. it's really hard to say it truly is 30fps feels more like 50

Call me crazy but I enjoyed this game quite a bit
You ain't crazy, the game gets a lot hate but it's a enjoyable game to playthrough.
And for the price it was going for last Christmas it was bargain.

You can't believe it because you didn't play it without prejudice. Usual hater.
It's a genuinely good game.

its a fun 7/10 game.

People think 7 out of 10 games have no redeeming qualities but i find myself really liking a lot of these games. Days Gone, Mass Effect Andromeda, Destiny back in the day, AC Unity, DriveClub, and plenty more. I feel like a lot of times people want every game to be a goty contender and end up either skipping it or hate playing it. You have to take what the game is giving you sometimes. And not everything needs to be a goty contender.

Same thing is going on with Dragon Age right now. its got its flaws, but its a fun 7/10 game that people really want to flop and be a 4/10 game. it's not. I wish it a 9/10 goty contender too but sometimes its ok to play a flawed but still fun game.

Remember to upgrade your melee skills then your force skills. The game isnt fun for the first couple of hours because they lock away some key moves behind upgrades. dont worry about gun upgrades until after you've finished up everything. Dont worry about unlocking any new guns you find. Invest those points into melee and force skills.

Increase melee/force damage, and unlock the skill that negates enemy arm block. Dont play in performance mode. It removes all the fancy RT effects and makes it look last gen. Its a pretty smooth 30 fps game. just dont switch back and forth and you will get used to it pretty fast.

Forspoken is a fun 7/10 game. With great combat, exploration loop, music etc.
Callisto is terrible slog I was barely able to finish. It's such a disappointment because it looks so good.
Left/right punk, corridor. Repeat. And then slap in the face with non ending. I would Honestly give it a 3. Maaaaaybe 4... but not personally.

Thank you! Will take all of this in consideration

you can use force, weapons and blocking on top of the left right dodge. hell, if you are still dodging mid way through the game then you are not using your arsenal effectively.

they are both fun 7/10 games. this one just didnt connect with you. it happens. not every game is for everyone.

I don't want to turn this into endless arguing (yes no yes not) but I really think It's shallow and repetitive. It's all there is. And don't even mention combat against multiple enemies.
There is nothing that shouldn't connect here with me. I like games like dead space or resident evil.
Don't let graphics and setting blind you.

Im 24 hours in and having a really great time in DA. Has its flaws sure, wish i could be an asshole or wish for better writing, but still enjoying my time with it and probably gonna do everything the game has to offer. Glad i didnt skip it based on those clips pre release, because the game (so far) is nothing like that.

I am also generaly in the same boat as you. Often liking games that get 6-7 scores.
Most of these scores are often because of any other reasons than game quality itself.
I will replay Callisto one day... one day....

Let's add some variety to the conversation.
The Callisto Protocol vs Forspoken battle...

Well, purely mathematically if you take metacritic.
Callisto - Forspoken
Press - 69 vs 64
Players - 6.8 vs 4.1
Callisto - WIN

As a person who has played both, for me personally both games are very so-so. But probably Callisto upset me more because there were at least some expectations from it, from Forspoken it was immediately clear that it would be bad.
That's why it's a draw =)))

Compare combat alone and it's insane difference.
Forspoken actually does some very unique stuff with traversal and combat. You end up fighting like a badass.
Public opinion and reviews don't matter for it. That game was dead before it released. Everyone was meming on it before they played it... and then never played it

Same. We dont get single player games like this anymore so when I get something thats somewhat linear with great combat, I am far more accepting of their flaws.

I just like the gameplay loop of callisto and dragon age. No tedious open world crap. You are constantly engaging in either exploration or battle and you are rewarded for it. Star Wars outlaws legit broke me with the constant traveling and lack of progress. I prefer the closed off but still somewhat open design of Dragon Age. And while Callisto is linear as fuck, it is still way more engaging than something like Hellblade 2 which is frankly insulting as a video game.

My ideal game would be something like Silent Hill 2 which is a great mix of open areas and linear levels mixed in with some fairly simple puzzles, and I think thats where Callisto faltered. it's an action game with no puzzles or bigger exploration areas that relies too heavily on its combat system and if that doesnt click with you then you will end up hating it because frankly aside from that and graphics, there isnt much else. Crazy that Bloober got that part right and Striking Distance studios filled with hollywood talent from SSM, ND, Insomniac, and Infinity Ward didnt.

The combat system in Callisto is very bad, whole game is one big gut with loading times, and there are only 8 enemies in the game, the combat system is actually a quick time event when you bend over the whole game from left to right for all 8 hours. Actually, that's why I wrote that it upset me more.

The combat system and movement in Forespoken didn't show anything interesting to me personally, for two reasons, the enemies are absolutely not interesting. Well, to be honest, flights, parkour and magic were in the same Infamos 1-2-3, so it doesn't represent anything special.

Well, forgive me for the fact that Square Enix ended up turning this into Forespoke, after that, there were no longer any special expectations from this game:

Well, there is a complete draw between the games, because both games actually killed their developers and both studios were closed =)

That was just a tech demo. I don't think it had anything to do with forspoken but maybe.
I still feel forspoken is way more ambitious than cp

There was nothing stopping them from sticking to this tech demo version, especially considering how well it was received by players, but in the end they decided to change direction to a new one and lost. What would have happened if the game had stuck to the concept, unfortunately, we will never know.

But considering how it all ended, especially for the studio. The decision was clearly wrong.

Luminous engine was amazing. FF XV still looks fantastic. Shame they killed it with forspoken.
I know there is nothing about animations that's specific to luminous engine but Man does FF XV and Forspoken share the animation blending and feel. There is something about these games.
2 screenshots from pc and one from ps4 just for good measure:

Excuse the poor washed out vid, but these animations kinda to ffel like ff xv

In the gaming industry, the engine has an extremely mediocre value, the developers even saying - "If the game you plan to make does not require technologies that can be offered by engines already available on the market, making your own engine does not make sense." This is due to the fact that your own engine must be constantly maintained, updated, adjusted to the realities of the market - and all this requires huge costs and staff. Working with a ready-made engine frees you from a headache, but designers, artists, 3D modelers, etc need time to learn how to use it and will they be able to use and work with a non-native engine to the fullest, but in any case, the costs will be significantly lower.

Luminous was killed by several factors, the first is that the engine was extremely inconvenient to work with, and development on it took a lot of time, secondly, the costs for its development and maintenance were simply astronomical. Especially when compared with the license for Unreal, to which they eventually switched.

After unlocking all the guns and their upgrades in the game and playing Calisto like Dead Space, suddenly I'm having more fun with it. Hmm?

There is nothing wrong with that, we are all people with different tastes. Games should bring pleasure and joy. If you play and you like it, that's great.

I really enjoyed it but the ending of the DLC was disappointing. Regardless it's easily one of the best looking game this gen. I hope a Pro patch drops soon.
