The Cape |OT| Well, it has Summer Glau...

Looks like it had a successful premiere, and the viewers seemed to like it because they stayed watching.

Wonder if it will stay that way.

I'm literally in shock :lol

Normally, I'd be unimpressed with a 2.6 premiere, but the fact that it held them in the second episode and actually *gained* viewers in the last half-hour is ridiculous (even the most popular shows at 10pm see a small drop off at 10:30).

NBC should put it at 10pm for the rest of the season.

I feel guilty even pointing this out, but he's homeless living in an abandoned subway area but he's somehow found numerous poisonous frog venoms and the equipment to make a knife throwing machine?
WHAT THE F*@k?

You know good writers would have picked up on this and had his instantly rich gadget partner give him an untraceable credit card or a bag of cash. She is good for it from the car she drives.

As for the show it is terrible, worst than the worst season of HEROES. The only 2 things I like from the show is Keith David and Chess's outfit. He looks like a serious crazy villain. The short guy's leather jacket looked pretty badass as well.

I hadn't planned on watching The Cape, but I ended up tuning in. It was better than I thought it would be. But I watched with the mindset that this is very much a comic book - the dialogue, the villains, the winking at the audience, the mysterious investigative blogger-chick, etc. Some stuff you just need to accept (e.g. homeless and alone, the dude manages to steal a generator, frog poison, etc.) because it's.... a comic book.

I don't know if I'll watch regularly - and maybe they blew it all on Episode 1 - but I'll probably tune it again out of curiosity.

Just finished watching it on my DVR a couple minutes ago, the pacing on the show is awful. Waaaaay too fast, I don't care about any of the characters at all because of this.

Fixed (sorry, just a pet peeve :) )

As for the money, this really bothered me too - unless he took some of the cash from the bank robberies. Of course this wasn't made clear at all in the show.

Is she pretty in Cape? I'm scared to watch in case she's still as skinny as in her recent photographs. I can't go through that stress again.

No idea haven't watched it yet, but she probably is. She always looks stunning on TV, not so much in pictures.

Not sure what pics you're referring to, but she looks gorgeous on the show. I suppose her face is a bit more angular than in say Terminator (sharp jaw? lol), but she doesn't look too skinny at all. Actually she rocks a black skirt like there's no tomorrow.

Wow this show is terrible. I could not even finish the whole premiere. Heroes looks like quality entertainment compared to this.

Thanks for the reassurance :)

The numbers still aren't good enough once the inevitable decline starts.

I'll be interested to see what the ratings are for the next new episode (1/17). By the end of the season I'd bet it falls to under 2.0 and is not renewed.

Right, I know. But the inevitable decline should have happened at after the first hour. It didn't, and actually gained in the demo and viewers over the second half hour. That's not normal, especially given the show's quality.

I think it's too early to make any bets like you are before we see next week's ratings.

Wow, just watched the first two episodes. Pretty bad.

The core premise of a good cop deciding to put on a mask and fight crime after he's framed for being a supervillain? That's pretty cool. I'd love to see a show that takes a similar approach to the whole superhero thing as Nolan's Batman movies.

But being trained by the circus to use a borderline magic cape as a weapon, to disappear, and to hypnotize people, all apparently in like a week? That's stupid.

Meeting some ultra super computer hacker with a magic holographic future computer who becomes his sidekick? Also stupid.

Blatantly stealing his superhero identity from an existing (in his world) comic book? Stupid.

And that's not even touching on the pretty poor writing and directing, or how the music doesn't really fit the tone at all.

It's interesting how animated superhero shows have been regularly done well since the early '90s, but every attempt at a live action one has been pretty much a flop.

All these negative reviews make me wanna watch the show even more..

Or maybe just because someone mentioned Summer Glau wearing a skirt.

God are the ever gonna start the second half of the championship game?

It's not like it gained that much in the second hour. The numbers were virtually flat, which admittedly is better than I would've expected, but then again I didn't turn it off either. I still think it will drop next week.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Once again it's another show where the ratings will be more interesting than the actual program.

I agree with you. I think we'll just have to see this one through. Next week will be interesting. We're all expecting it to drop, but by how much?

And even if it settles at a 1.9 or 2.0, what does that mean for renewal?

I just watched both episodes yesterday evening. So far I like it. And Summer Glau in a black wig was a refreshing change.

Hey guys, if you want to watch a good 'people with powers' show go watch Misfits.

Already did that during the holidays :D and anyway this isn't really a "people with powers" show, it's more like a "people who are really good at magic tricks and illusions and stuff" show... so far at least.

I quite enjoyed it. It wasn't amazing or anything but I was entertained throughout and it seems to go well with my current love of ordinary people turned super hero in a 'real world' setting (recently re-watched Kick-Ass and Defendor).
I'm gonna keep watching it. Wonder how long it'll last though.

I like it. I watched it with my GF's 8-year old boy and he really seemed in to it to the point he made me pause it when he had to pee and didn't get up from the couch to fuck off like he usually does. He was glued. Totally anecdotal but I'm wondering if this might be a hit, actually.

Hit is a strong word. It showed an unusually high retention rate between hours (and at 10pm) so we'll see. My little brother fucking loved it, but he's 16 and stupid.

On another note, I bet that Harry's Law is going to fail. Sad too, because David E. Kelley makes some great TV.

Maybe a hit with the kids, then? It could be a good move to tone it down a bit and put it on at 8/7c instead of 9/8c.

The 12-17 demo isn't the target for networks, so doesn't really matter.

Even though "winning the timeslot" doesn't really matter, 10pm has less competition and its where The Cape did the best with both demos + views (minus the first half-hour for viewers). That's where it should go.

They'll be a considerable amount of shuffling on NBC's part once a few of its shows inevitably fail hard.

WOW.

Somehow that was even worse than Heroes :lol I don't know about anyone else, but I love when I show thinks I am completely retarded and can't recall what happened 5 minutes ago, and insists on showing me a flashback. Fucking awful.

Who knows? It's sad to say, but a 2.0 might equal a renewal for a network that's failing as badly as NBC is.

Besides the pacing, I thought it was pretty fun. It has some issues to iron out and I'm willing to stick around and see if they get fixed. Couple things:

-I'm noticing a bit of a parallel to Batman. You've got The Cape, the guy who's like Commissioner Gordon, Orwell is like Oracle, etc. Not a bad thing to copy IMO.

-I'm intrigued by this Tarot, sounds like a league of villains.

-I think the show maintained the comedic elements through the second hour. They weren't as blatant but they were definitely there.

I guess I'm gonna be part of The Cape's defense force :lol

the second episode was maybe worse.

flashforward was definitely better than this.

I've not seen the second episode, but I think you actually might be right. As unbelievably shit as FlashForward was, it at least was building toward something - whatever that was. With this, he's either going to clean up the streets and get his family back or he isn't. SNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE.

Yeah the flashbacks were hilarious. They literally reminded us of what happened like a minute prior.

And I'm still in shock that it's called Palm City and the criminal organization is Tarot. Wtf. This shit is worse than Batman and Robin to be honest.

Orwell is the worst offence here. As soon as that came up I shouted at the bloody screen - it's as subtle as a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster.

I kind of liked this show. Most of the first two episodes are good but they cheese it up way too much at the end of each episode. Like wtf is he doing on the top of that building looking down on the city.. he doesn't have super vision or hearing or anything like that. The scene with the kid was also too cheesy(at the end of the first episode).

Yeah the part when he talked to his kid as The Cape was pretty lame, just got done watching the first ep.

I had a hunch Glau was Orwell, and knew for sure as soon as she wasn't with the circus crowd.

Don't really care for any of the characters, but maybe their development is just a bit slow. Over all worth watching though.

And the CGI was just awful. And I'm totally buying Glau's projection keyboard.

Went in expecting to hate it but thoroughly enjoyed the first ep and about to watch the second.

I laughed at
the hypnotist bit, and the bit where 'tattoo' meets scales "So you're scales? *schamng* Not impressed"

Great explosion when that train car went up near the start too, and the fighting is surprisingly decent.

Same here.. i totally thought this would be garbage but im actually really digging it.

That part where Warner hands that guy the leeches.. that would be a perfect gif :lol

edit: lol at
nightshade and jimson weed! Who doesnt have belladonna and datura in their "bag?" :lol
i love comic logic.. so much fun

edit2: just noticed this episode has all my favorite things.. datura, belladonna, possibly tetrodotoxin.. lovely!

edit3: yes, lets not practice with deadly instruments to start off with :lol

edit4(final one lol): i dont know what to say. That part with the mask. If The Cape lost the music it would be the most stunning portrayal of the mentally ill on primetime tv ever.

I hate this show, but that projection keyboard is real and can be bought today.

Kinda like Flash Forward. Where in the premiere they showed the same flash forward like fucking 5 times. TV can be so awful with stuff like that....

Most of it is network notes. Sometimes, the network believes that we're all 5 year old children who have the memory capacity of goldfish.

Still doesn't excuse the myriad of problems with either FlashForward or The Cape, but the flashbacks may not be the writers's fault.
