Woah, Joseph Gordon Levitt would be pretty great.

Regardless I doubt Nolan and co when they recast will do it any time soon. They'll wait a while to let this settle down and people to move on.

Who were the other candidates for the Joker other than Heath that were going around?

I think Paul Bettany was one of them.

This guy is perfect for the role.

Yea, i imagine once the script and such is done for the film, they'll get to casting then.

still though, this is gonna hang over the whole film from now until release. how awful

Well, I could totally see either Bettany or Levitt in Joker's current getup. Of course, whether they can do the same job as Heath has, well, that'll be something to wonder.

I believe Nolan will put the quality of his film and the story first, before anything else. If the story requires that the Joker appear in the third film, the role will be recast. Rachel Dawes would have been a far easier character to write out of the movie after Katie Holmes dropped out and Nolan kept her character around. The same will be true of the Joker, I imagine.

I don't think the Joker will be coming back.
the ending of TDK basically confirms he is.... as do Nolan and David Goyer themselves. Joker is a two movie storyline. You cant cut it halfway.

They're going to oliver-reed Heath Ledger. Nolan isn't signed for a 3rd movie either.

Yep. Heath and the cast loved the way the film was turning out. I don't think he would want Nolan to change it even.

to those who expect no recast:

Everyone is talking about the third film which DOES have joker. the joker storyline is a 2 film story, it isnt solved in TDK.

Which is the main issue.

It's like if James Earl Jones died after ESB and people said to not recast out of respect. It would cause a shit load of problems with the third movie.

What about that one Matrix guy? Wasn't he in the running to be joker too?

If you're thinking of recasting The Joker with Keanu Reeves I'm gonna go over to your place and punch you in the face.

There's no way Nolan isn't going to do a third, unless TDK tanks. And Joker must be re-cast for the third movie, plain and simple. It sucks, but there's no real other solution, and the one positive is that the Joker is at least a character where it will be a bit easier to get away with an actor switch (unlike, say, Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Gordon, etc.).

It'd be less respectful to Ledger to NOT recast the role. Do you think Ledger would want Nolan to cause his third film to be of lesser quality by having to somehow write out Joker when the joker storyline was only half-finished? Of course not.

Hugo Weaving might be good.

Too fucking old. This Joker is a young one. I think the 3rd rock from the sun guy would be good, and looks similiar enough to Ledger.

Man this is a fucked up conversation. I'm leaving this thread.

I'm sure this may sound stupid, but I thought that Nolan wasn't returning for the third film and they already had somebody else step in? Or was this just some stupid rumor I picked up somewhere?

Edit: I also approve of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, if only because of how much I loved Brick :)

Heath finished his work on Batman:

Hey folks, Harry here... There's a lot of rumors swirling around right now in regards to Heath and where his involvement with THE DARK KNIGHT was. I got it confirmed from a source involved in Post-Production on THE DARK KNIGHT. Heath's post work was complete. He had indeed finished it, as to not interfere with the production of the film he was doing with Gilliam. We're now working to find out what's going to happen there. The last known photo of Heath was as a clown in that film. Will Terry re-cast? What will happen? We'll try to find out for all of you. But there will be no-dubbing on Heath in THE DARK KNIGHT - his performance was finished.

This is the Batman thread where life goes on, so yeah, we have to talk about the recasting possibilities. If you want to talk about Heath, he has his own thread.

if there were a canadian bacon trilogy that ended on a cliffhanger, people would have been questioning what to do after john candy passed. it's a pertinent question

things would work out fine if they got a great actor, one who sort of made his performance a complete tribute to heath ledger's in TDK. like how ewan mcgregor channeled what's-his-name's performance of obi-wan in the original star wars movies

Wow the man isn't even in the ground and you folks are talking about recasting him.
Why would they wait to talk about it? It's not like they're hounding his little girl about who to cast as the Joker or something. Why would this bother anyone?

Recasting would actually be a nice tribute to Heath, to have a great actor come in and embrace the character Heath helped create would be an honor I imagine.

Fuck it. Just end the series after TDK.

Man...

I doubt Nolan was going to come back anyways. He's far too talented to be twiddling away on Superhero films.

Uh... Nolan's my favorite director and I would argue (very strongly) that Batman Begins is his best work yet... and that Dark Knight looks set to better it.

Gordon-Levitt is an amazing actor and actually looks kinda like Ledger. I would love it if he were cast in the third film.

Wow, I never even realized until now how much JGL looks like Heath Ledger. Give him a bulkier build and lighter hair, and it's practically him, looks-wise.

While I don't share your pessimism for the rest of the series and superhero films, this has been an extremely rough shoot. With the stunman and Heath.. it would be hard to come back. If a film of this scope and with these expectations didn't exist, the crew may think the risk of the stunts and exhaustion from the roles wouldn't have been a problem. I hope that's not what they think, but guilt can grow from such a difficult experience.

I was talking to a coworker a few months ago at how far one guy has come so young in his life. Someone a few years older than we were already had an Oscar nomination and was cast as one of the most iconic villains in American pop culture.

Heard the news from some coworkers as I was picking up games today. That conversation was the first thing that came to mind. Man that sucks.

Looks like he will be sort of immortalized in this role, though.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Nolan doesn't take the reins for the third film. Given how difficult the Dark Knight shoot was, and the LOADS of other projects Nolan is attached to, not to mention that he has looked at these Batman films one at a time contractually, it will be easy for him to hand it off to someone else.

I'd feel bad for Bale in that situation.

You don't like Memento?

In what way is me saying Batman Begins is Nolan's strongest work equivalant to me not liking Memento? I love Memento, and Prestige. They are both probably in my Top 5 or 10 films ever... I just feel like Batman Begins is a whole lot stronger and put together even better. I'm not discrediting his other works at all, but Batman is something special, from the thematic undertones, to the stylistic directions and cinematography, the excellent story... hell, I never once liked a single superhero film before it.

They can easily make a third movie without the Joker, it is a comic book movie after all.
His name can be thrown around a bit and the focus will be elsewhere.
