The Dark Knight Rises (Batman 3) - No Riddler

I just finished watching Batman Begins. It's even better than I remembered it.

Man, I'm really getting into the Batman mythos. After I finish watching The Dark Knight tomorrow, I'll buy some comics from Comixology (thinking about starting The Long Halloween).

Batman Begins is so awesome and moving. It gets bogged down in some parts otherwise for me it would be right up there with the Dark Knight. Another difficult thing in terms of Begins is that they have to cover so much, whereas with the Dark Knight they just get to focus in on a short period of time. I was really impressed with Liam Neeson's performace as Ra's Al Ghul. I love when he returns to Bruce's manor. The villains really are the best thing about this trilogy.

also Nolan needs to pull a George Lucas and digitally remove the "nice coat" line.

Do it. If you liked Dark Knight, know that this book borrowed heavily from it, specifically the relationship between Bats, Gordon, and Dent. It also feaures a laundry list of rogues, each in an entertaining way.

It's also a damn good murder mystery.

EDIT: In response to some of the discussion above about Begins: while it's a good reboot, I really don't care for it much at all, particularly upon subsequent viewings. The ending monorail fight is as cheesy as the 70s era TV show.

The fact that Dark Knight is so good doesn't help either.

I think it's one of my fav's.

might as well get Dark Victory along with TLH. They are both fantastic.

And Catwoman: When in Rome.

I play exclusively as Tim Sale Catwoman in Arkham City and I love it.

EDIT: For those clamoring for more Riddler: both these books feature great appearances from him. TLH has some great Calendar Man stuff too, for those unfamiliar with the character.

PS/Drunk/Vanity EDIT: my avatar is broken on mobile devices. My bad.

I appreciate Begins because I feel it bring more substance to the story than TDK. TDK is definitely one of my favorite films, due to the Joker, the great amount of suspense in the film, and the bittersweet ending of Batman sacrificing himself (in a manner of speaking) for Gotham and showing how much of a hero he really is. But Begins is a much more personal film with a great theme about overcoming fear and conquering oneself to do the right thing. Because of that I feel like it resonates with me a lot more than TDK. Hopefully TDKR will bring this idea back to the forefront with Bruce's fight against Bane.

Have you read Year One or seen the animated feature (which is a great adaptation)?

I've read parts of it and I know it heavily influenced BB. I can never really get into comic books or graphic novels though. Something about the medium just doesn't flow with me but I suppose I should go back and finish it.

Unfortunate, but understandable. Full-length pictures are not my preferred medium, which likely explains my feelings about Begins, at least in part.

Edit: Definitely watch the animated feature if you can.

There's a free Batman promotional comic on Comixology that has brief snippets of a lot of the characters. Does anyone know what comic is this one right here:

I want to read that one since Bane seems to be the main villain in DKR.

I know I have the issue where that mini bio appears, but I can't tell you what one it is off the top of my head. It's only like 3 pages long at the back of the regular comic. They did them for like every one of Batman's villains over the course of 6 months or so 2 years ago.

Watching Batman Begins right now. My sister says Katie Holmes is really pretty. I didn't care before but now I'm kind of wishing she had stayed on in Dark Knight after seeing her performance again.

I will argue this point to my death. A lot of people shit on cause she is Mrs. Cruise and not a great actress but in terms of her acting in BB she was fine. Worst of the cast? Ok yeah but she wasn't the biggest role in the movie, didn't bring it down, or distract from the plot. In fact of the most common complaints against BB none have to do with Katie. They always have to do with the third act, or when Bruce finally becomes Batman, or the water evaporator.

Holmes was fine as the strong willed childhood friend who steers Bruce in the right direction. Oscar worthy performance? No but good nonetheless. I know they had to switch because of some issues out of their control, but they didn't exactly upgrade with Maggie. Maggie is a better actress but she played a terrible Rachel. Didn't match Holmes beauty and definitely played Rachel very differently to the point she was annoying and I didn't care when she died.

Holme's Rachel was more likeable and you really believed that she was in love with Bruce. Maggie's Rachel seemed more and more annoyed with Bruce not understanding the sacrifices he was making living a fake life while constantly risking his life. She also didn't seem torn between two men she loved. Seemed really arrogant and cocky too. Rachel from BB was also a strong woman but there was some vulnerability to her.

"OH THANKS FOR SAVING ME FROM FALLING DOWN A BUILDING AND BEING KILLED HEY WHERE IS HARVEY!!!???".

Bruce should have slapped her at that point.

My biggest problem with Begins is her character, not really her. There wasn't really a need for a made up character when they could have just used Harvey Dent and had two movies to establish the ralationship between Dent, Gordon, and Batman instead of one. But, every super hero movie has to have the hot girl who the hero reveals himself to in the end, so we get the worthless (or not much worth) Rachel. And if you really wanted to keep her, split her into two characters and have all three of them be childhood friends. Again, you would have two movies to play up the love triangle angle instead of one.

All true but again BB's problems have nothing to do with Katie Holmes, her acting, or even her character. I guess to break the mold they could have had a boy childhood friend who grows up to be assistant to DA Harvey Dent.

But I doubt they had anything about TDK planned out since at the time BB was made, it was to resurrect the franchise. No one knew how well it would do, how Nolan would do, and if there would be sequels.

Also I think there is enough time devoted to Bruce's childhood and training that having a stereotypical female character is easier to overlook for me. To me BB's nailed his origins so perfectly that the rest is just gravy. And even then she served as a great guide for Bruce's morals. She wasn't simply just some piece of hot ass from his past, she constantly challenged his worldview.

Right. Her character for sure has a purpose as far as being a plot device moving Bruces story along, at least until he becomes Batman. But, everything she does would have worked exactly the same if she was male and named Harvey Dent. Moving to the Dark Knight, I think her character is very important. So I guess I would have gone with the "all three are childhood friends" approach, even if that's a little fan-fictiony. I would have enjoyed more Gordon, Dent, and Batman fighting crime. As it is, the three of them pretty well do one thing together and it spirals out of control.

Katie Holmes should have returned, end of story. She was cute but tough, what more can you want? The emotional experience the audience would have had watching her getting blown up in The Dark Knight would have been really big.

And leave mad money behind?

There were more reasons behind it then that other film she was doing. The studios apparently were concerned about her relationship with Tom Cruise and the image she had built up as a result.

My point exactly. I think it was a combo of her not showing interest, promoting her husband's movie over her own movie (War of the Worlds came out same month I think), and wanting to do Mad Money over TDK. Her mistake. Terrible career move. Wasn't there also a rumor that Tom Cruise didn't like that she would have to make out with Bale?

But yeah seeing Katie Holme's Rachel blow up would have been a lot more emotional.

Wow that seems beyond nutty. How is she supposed to work in films?

Yea studios hate "baggage" which is what anything involving Tom Cruise will bring. Baggage can potentially hurt the success of any project. Ask this guy:

I do agree that she shouldve returned though. I was watching Begins last night and kind of missed her. Meg's take on the character always made me feel like Bruce was a little kid who needed scolding. Probably not her fault though of course. Who knows.

Shouldve just chosen Rachel McAdams overall.

Nah. She smooched that guy in The Kennedy's and he's far more handsome than Bale...

Man screw Rachel Dawes talk. Lets talk about how awesome sauce Batcave is gonna look!

Oh yeeeeeeea. Eight years later. Its probably all fancy by now. I hope it has a security system that goes bonkers and starts revealing every Batman related object in the cave like in the movie Batman and Robin.
