The Disaster Artist - Teaser Trailer #1

Not a fan of the final take. It just looks like Franco is not even trying, while in the original it definitely feels like Tommy was doing his best, even if the results are well known. In other words, it feels forced.

But I guess acting badly in a convincing manner, so to say, is no easy task. It's hard to explain.

The book it's based on is good, but the audiobook version is better. Greg narrates his experience himself and also does an incredible Tommy impression. Worth the quick listen.

This could be amazing but I really hope it's not just a movie that's gonna run all the popular lines from The Room into the ground..

Which is the feeling I get from both the poster and the trailer.

Hopefully it's just for marketing though

Is it weird that I've never even heard of The Room until like 2 months ago?

I've seen the famous clips on Youtube (haven't watched the full movie), and I'm excited for this.

Watched the teaser again.

I just am not liking James Franco's Tommy Wiseau one bit. Not like it's all about the impression but it seems like Franco is afraid to overact and ends up being way less weird than the actual man.

Going too far as an actor and really hamming it up? That I could see happening in a situation like this. But it's shocking to me that a professional actor would get such an exceptionally, excitingly weird subject for a character study and just undersell the hell out of the voice, the mannerisms, the alien form of acting.

Anyway, we'll always have the real Tommy.

Exactly. But that's the thing. It's not an easy task! But James Franco is an A-List professional actor. He's a fucking millionaire thanks to his success in his career. And this instance is actually pretty easy because Tommy already did all the bad acting. He just has to copy it. Capturing the real Tommy is different and it's hard to judge that too much until we see the film, but when you can't even properly mimic a scene that was already performed, you are simply not doing a good job.

I haven't seen the movie, but after watching a ten minute clip just now, it seems like an absolutely amazing subject for a movie (and of course the book).

Worth it just to find out how someone can manage spend 6 million dollars on... The Room.

So Greg Sestero is working on a new movie with Tommy Wiseau. (written by Sestero) Source:IMDB

Can't believe they're still working together
after how absolutely insufferable Tommy acted through their entire relationship.

Sestero sorta reminds me of the author dude from House of Cards. He knows he's orbiting around a slow motion car crash but he can't keep away.

Yeah but just a better actor than the House of Cards dude, for sure.

I'll totally watch this, but I'm not sure this movie will reach a big audience. You kind of have to know the original to really appreciate this.

Btw. Always cool to spot someone from How did this get made in a movie. Paul Scheer <3

Looks amazing. Franco looks amazingly close and actually sounds close enough (especially considering he’s an actor, not an impersonator). I don’t get the Franco hate.

Anyway, I can’t wait.

I always thought of Franco as one of those guys that tries too hard to be funny so that people would like him.

But he's grown on me the past couple of years, and he looks absolutely perfect as Tommy.

I'm reading the book now and it's amazing. This is faaar more than a movie making movie and more about the absolute weirdness of tommy wiseau.

From what I understand the internet detectives on him basically came up dry. He sort of appears out of nowhere.

I HATE that Franco isn't putting on a voice. Maybe he's afraid of insulting Tommy but come on man it's like the key aspect of portraying the guy, nobody talks like he does.

same can be said for other films like sharknado, etc. the "bad" movie thing really doesn't work if the filmmakers are self aware.

This is the key here, and also why I like Gods of Egypt so much. It's like the massive Hollywood blockbuster version of The Room - the guy who made it was so invested in it, so sure what he had created was this amazing thing that would spawn a franchise and the end result whiffs so fucking hard, I adore it. The only other thing I feel like Tommy's done that has come close is his TV show "The Neighbors" which is SO BAD, but for the same reason that The Room is good (he was trying to make an actual drama, Neighbors is him trying to make a comedy sitcom). When he tries to ham it up like the Tommy Wise-Show it's pretty rough but The Neighbors is just another insane train wreck of someone trying to do something on purpose and failing spectacularly, making it good for a totally different reason.

Some fun facts, I've met Tommy several times now and he did a voice on a cartoon I worked on, he is a marvel in person. Apparently he wants to not only make a sequel to The Room, but a prequel too, and an animated series.

God I could probably write a short story based on the day he came to record his voice, how difficult he is to get in contact with and how flaky his "assistant" [that we're all pretty sure is just him] was to get ahold of, that was amazing.

I wish I knew who the fuck I lent my signed The Room Blu-Ray to ):<

LMAO, I can totally see Wiseau putting on a fake voice just to convince other people he has an assistant.

Please write that story ;)

I'd kill for a camera crew to follow him for one day just to see how bizarre he is. I'm sure they would get some gold.

Yeah I was never a massive fan, but never disliked the guy either. He’s certainly grown on me though lately, especially as I’ve started paying attention and noticed he seems comfortable playing in serious roles (127 Hours), but is also more than willing to be the butt of a joke (This is the End).

Also, his appearances on The Colbert Report where he tries to stump Colbert in Tolkien knowledge are fantastic (more for how insanely deep Colbert’s Tolkien knowledge goes, but also for how good natured Franco is about getting torched).

Ive been waiting on this trailer for months, and though its only a brief teaser, it looks good. I've heard rumors that the film shies away from some of the darker elements of Wiseau and Sestero's relationship, but Im glad to see everyone involved openly showcasing the man's ineptitude. The one thing that's bothering me though is Franco's Wiseau accent. It's just not registering for me. And the final take of his line is strangely apathetic. Hell, that's one of the most infamous scenes in The Room with Tommy giving his all.

Otherwise, it's looking good. Can't wait.

Yeah I very much enjoyed those as well. He's a really likeable guy, and the fact that he's doing this project makes me like him a whole lot more.

Which is something a few years ago I thought I'd never say.

Either I'm going crazy or you're all deaf.

It may not be the Wiseau impression, but he certainly is doing one.

Ok he might be putting on a voice but it's not a good one. As others have pointed out it really only happens in the final take, but Tommy has SUCH a unique voice, Franco's impersonation pales in comparison to the real thing to the point where it sounds like he's not even doing Tommy's voice at all. So I guess I should have clarified that I hate he's not doing a Wiseau voice, not that I hate he isn't doing a voice at all. Cause you're right it doesn't sound like normal Franco voice, but it absolutely does not sound like Tommy's.

I mean it's also entirely possible that his voice sounds much more like him in other parts of the movie and this is just a poor example of it. Or it could be as I guessed and maybe he's not doing an all-in impersonation because he doesn't want to come off as disrespectful to Tommy (which would also go with the rumor that they left some of the darker aspects of the book out of the movie, again possibly to spare Tommy's feelings/not piss him off).

Um... Am I missing something? Franco's totally doing an accent here. What are you all talking about?

You want some over-the-top parody or something instead?

They should ADR all of Franco's dialogues with Tommy himself. Also the ADR should be slightly off sync, VERY noticeable and not match the lip movement.

Would be the most meta thing ever.
