Well then what do you suggest we do then? Ask for marketing departments not to lie to the public?

We shoukd ban all marketing related jobs. Everyone that has been forced to work with marketing and PR people woild agree with me, they are just the worst.

A world without marketing:

You could probably rename the thread Gaming's continual brazenly deceitful ad campaigns.

Actually, you could probably just call it brazenly deceitful marketing, and have it apply across all marketing!

Final edit! Am not saying it's right by the way, just that it happens, all the time.

Aren't ads deceptive by nature?
I think it's good this has been called out,I myself had a great laugh at this when I saw the quote used out of context. In the end though, it doesn't matter cause ads mean nothing except to the casual observer.

What I don't understand is people saying its nothing new...so? It is still deceitful even if it has happened in the past, man some people really love defending a game/company.

Some people would actually rather attack me than talk about the company using provably deceitful advertising. Unbelievable. Y'all deserve to be treated like morons by publishers. Clearly you couldn't care less. Absolutely disgusting. Y'all have made your own bed. Enjoy laying in it.

You are talking about a publisher using some quotes from prerelease write-ups that don't quite fit the bill. Look at your hilariously over-the-top responses to learning how advertising works.

This cannot be 100% serious and was more just a search for a reason to complain about a vidya garm you don't like.

It amazes me we don't have laws in place to stop quotes being taken out of the context for marketing. Like seriously what is stopping laws from being passed to make this liable for defamation?

Why I can spot deceptive advertising and know its bs. Your the one getting bent out of shape over it.

Just because you're informed enough to know its a load of crap duesnt make it acceptable to mislead those who aren't. It's up to those that are able to recognize it to point it out so others can be aware.

You made a thread about a common marketing tactic, spun it out as some Check This Crazy New Bullshit Out, and then got rightfully laughed out because literally no one is surprised about this shit anymore. No one's saying it's not deceptive, it's always been deceptive, but people are calling you out because you're trying to manufacture some controversy here.

I'm not on any sort of Division hype fumes either, so you can check that ol' bullshit out the door too.

That's a pretty pessimistic (and wrong) view. Ads aren't inherently deceptive at all, they're just supposed to get you to notice a product or service you might not have otherwise. There's no reason every ad couldn't be 100% truthful and still be ads.

Just because you're informed enough to know its a load of crap duesnt make it acceptable to mislead those who aren't. It's up to those that are able to recognize it to point it out so others can be aware.

You seem so bent out of shape, were you running around when Destiny launched and all of the ads didn't say "HEY THIS GAME SUCKS GUYS" to make sure people knew that it was deceptively trying to pass the game off as good?

Seriously though, could they not find a couple positive quotes in context? Those are so far from what those publications meant when they wrote that its insulting.

Deceptive ads are illegal. But I have no idea why defamation would be involved.

Again what in the bloody tomb stone is talking about it going to change it? it's ingrained in marketing DNA to do shit like this. What needs to happen is that, the sites that are providing these quotes need to stop, providing them.

Do quotes fall under any type of copyright or something?

Calm down dude lmao

I played the closed and open beta for amount of time. About 10-15 hours. I mainly played with friends but the beta got old quick.

Now that I'm playing the Uncharted 4 beta...I realize how bad the shooting, cover mechanics, and overall fluidity is for The Division.

For the marketing to come out guns blazing like this is pretty damn funny. I'll be shocked if the game scores even an 80 on Metacritic.

You are clearly incapable of seeing any wrongdoing no matter how blatant or obvious it is. If you think using a quote in reference to population numbers for a beta in an ad campaign that implies it's meant in the context of the quality of a game is not deceitful than you're just wrong. Your horribly horribly wrong and I feel sorry for you that you can't pry your mind out from under the corporate ass it's currently stuck under long enough to see that.

The game's not even out yet.

Of course it's referencing the beta lol

But even that being said, any reasonable person knows that a community may not be the same size forever.

These are very general, blanket statements that an average person would accept as standard praise for a game.

The links you've shown to their real significance really don't stray that far away from the statements themselves.

There is no gross misrepresentation here.

I guess not? It's weird actually, there have been a massive amount of articles about The Division and the betas and the upcoming launch. And the buzz about the game has been pretty positive. So kinda weird that they couldn't find anything else.

Then again,we say they "couldn't" maybe they just took the first thing they found?
Who knows what goes on behind the scenes.
"Yo joe, make an ad with two awesome quotes, you have 2 hours"

So people aren't outraged by a marketing technique that is COMMONLY used in many ad campaigns (do you throw your remote at the TV when you see movie ads with quotes that are spin?) they bring up a decent point that you do seem to axe to grind regarding this game so your response is to lash out and call them morons and throw a temper tantrum?

Alrighty then.

Reread what I said. I never called anyone morons I said they deserve to continue to be treated as such since that's what is happening with misleading advertising campaigns like what I've highlighted in the OP. They seem perfectly happy being mislead and lied to like they don't know any better.

I've airway stated multiple times I can't think of any recent examples of such blatant misleading out of context quote advertising for a AAA video game. People have posted examples from years ago (PS1, Daikatana) and theybhavenoisted examples of media bias bit nobody has shown a recent relevant example of blatant out of context quoting in game advertising. So yes I think it's worth mentioning and calling out.

Just curious were you outraged when the Sony branded Destiny marketing came across heavy handed it was a PS exclusive?

Hell while I wasn't following this board but was still somewhat more informed than the average consumer and I thought it was a PS exclusive.

That was just as deceiving. Are you going to expect everyone to reject the PlayStation in return?

Defamation because it's potentially damaging to the websites who they quote's reputation.
That would be a very tenuous argument. Really you could just sue Ubi in civil court for violating FTC rules. But it would be a lot of work for no real gain.

"Yo joe, make an ad with two awesome quotes, you have 2 hours"

Fairly accurate. At a previous job, it was the case of having an hour or so to hunt out random quotes, send them in and they pick and choose what they wanted at the PR end. Some of it was looking through sites like GAF and finding positive/negative comments and letting the higher-ups know what is being said.

The advertisement is not an advertisement about population size. It's an ad for the game. As such the quote is implied as meaning the quality of the game "The Division" blows the quality of the game "Destiny" out of the water when it says absolutely no such thing in its original context. How is that not misleading?

So you didn't call anyone morons but said they deserve to be treated as morons?

Oh yeah, I'm sorry you're right, but is that supposed to be less inflammatory/offensive? Lol

Pretty awful quotes, yeah. It's specially surprising because the game is probably going to get decent reviews and, I mean, surely there must be better, more honest quotes they could have used.

Good on kotaku and this thread for calling them out of it. There's really not much else that needs to be done, nobody wants to start a class action lawsuit over this, but its good to call it out when it happens.

I was already suspicious when with the talks of Year 1.

But a direct comparison to Destiny? I mean... it's not impossible to be better. Destiny proved that there are legs for FPS service games, but you know.... Destiny is really fucking good right now in small doses.

Quote mining though... that's been around since forever. Kind of a bad sign that they would have to do that.

As I said in my earlier post, community size is a characterization of quality for many people. And this game is pretty much the type of game that warrants that type of characterization to begin with lol

Therefore, your link to the source of the statement actually supports the statement itself and it is not misleading or misrepresentation.

Quite the tantrum you're throwing over here. Over an advertisement for a video game you don't even like?

has no relation to using misleading out of context quotes. All the quotes for evelbe were completely in context they were just horribly wrong. The evolve campaign is a fault of the media coverage whereas the issue in the OP points directly at the publisher. While they may both be symptoms of the same evil (game marketing) they are not comparable case wise.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

ONE GAME HAS WON

E3 2014 BEST OF SHOW GAMESCOM 2014 BEST OF SHOW************

****(from ign and Gamecritics)

Except that the year beforehand Titanfall and Destiny(familiar names here) won every award at both shows. Plus they are using awards they got from a few select places to say they won 'THE' award(vagueness is the issue here). If this isn't misleading than I don't know what is.

Yes as another user said Evolve died for it's sins and so did Titanfall to an extent but my point is this is nothing new and one thread on Gaf won't fix it. Also you have the issue where even in this thread you're being accused of having an agenda of all things lol. But at the same time you're going about this all wrong, you can't really start wagging fingers yelling NO when one game claims to be better than the other.

Even if it doesn't it won't matter because full proper reviews won't be out for at least a week post release due to Ubi not releasing early review copies. By that point it will already have sold in droves.

Your right, great strategy from Ubi to get dem sales.

Show me where Destiny advertising used out of context quotes to imply a completely unintended meaning. You can't because it didn't happen. We aren't talking about misleading wording here we are talking about implying a context for quotes that was never intended. This is certainly not something o have seen anytime recently in gaming advertising and to me it is absolutely a new low. If you don't agree that's fine but you need to either discuss the actual topic of the thread and stop with the thinly veiled straw man attacks.

You are correct they didn't use out of context quotes. But again it was implied. Marketing game does this shit all the time. I think some just find it odd that this game is being called out for it.

For those of us not bothered by it or fall for it, your response appears to come across that we deserve to be treated like morons.

I am discussing the topic of the thread by stating this is the game of marketing like it or not. You just don't like the responses you are getting

Well the user reviews are gonna be the usual 10/10 and 0/10 drivel from blind fanboys and blind haters.

I expect the "professional" reviews to have massive swings from 9/10 all the way down to like 4/10 with websites who want their clicks from furious fanboys and of course the usual "good pals with the publisher" squad and their extremely positive reviews.

I personally love the game, but I also played it myself for 30 hours.
reviews are basically unuseable nowadays. Watching footage on youtube and twitch or playing the game yourself of course is the best way to "review" if you will enjoy something.

I have always "filled in the blanks" in a negative way whenever I read a reviewers quote when it comes to advertising, always assuming they have taken a negative comment and spinned it into a positive one.
For instance, the review blurb would say "The game we have been waiting for", but in my head I would imagine it said "this could have been the game we have been waiting for, but unfortunately it is not".
I am a half empty glass type of person though.

People keep saying this is a common tactic but not a single person has been able to privilege a recent example. I've said it before and I'll say it again to my knowledge this is not a common practice in games advertising and IMO it's a new low. So yes I think it's worth decrying. If you don't agree that's fine but dismissing it as "common" is just not accurate unless someone can show me otherwise.

I mean honestly I rather watch a game in motion on twitch or youtube and then find a few reviews that vary in score or quality. Fuck quotes and review stars on ads.

I roll my eyes half the time. Its like there is no way a person said that in full, we're is the rest..

That doesn't make it OK.

Do you get to decide what is and isn't OK? If society truly cared about this sort of practice not being okay, then people wouldn't so easily point out has this has been common practice in advertisement for years, if not moreso.

Also, OP's continual insistence that the examples provided are "AAA games" shows how little they know of how advertising works. This makes me think that this thread isn't actually about advertising, but rather another perceived chance to shit on the division.

This has been a thing for eons. It's not new or exclusive to the Division. Marketing is full of clever placement of quotations and statements to make a product sound as good as possible. News at 11.

The Ubisoft Crusade never ends on this forum.

Its been done for years, but once Ubisoft post something its now shocking and disgusting.

Ya'll need to calm yo tits.

Marketing gonna market.
