The Drinky Puppy Club - Official Thread

I feel I should mention my first "passer-by" experience.

My wife asked me to buy a satellite dish + tuner tonight, so I went into Shibuya to buy them from Bic Camera, the high street electronics store. I thought this would be the best time to check out the passer-by function, so I turned it on before I left work and did my shopping as usual. When I got home, I opened up my DS, and to my delight a little Shitsu had joined my Drinky. It said Buriemon's Shitsu, Sumomo-chan, has visited and brought you a present. It was the shabondama (bubble-blower). Sumomo likes the bubbles, but my Drinky doesn't.

Anyway, they played for a bit together, then I took Drinky home. When I got home it said that I've unlocked Shitsu breed in the kennel, and it also added Buriemon to my friend's list. Apparently she's a new gamer, only has 41 points, and her birthday is on 30 August. I put the blog URL in my friend card, so she might be checking out Puppy Times tonight :)

If I can have success like this on my first attempt, I wonder how much fun I could have over the holidays next week. I'll be sure to keep you posted.
that is actually really cool. the DS can be asleep and comunicate with others?
the passiveness is a great feature since people are really unlikely to whip out the DS and "do battle" at the grocery store etc.

OUT FOR DELIVERY

Gah!!@!@ I'm at school all day... I hope someone at my house gets the package -.-

If they don't drop it off you can go pick up the package at their distribution center if you get there before 7ish usually. The FedEx one is on Boones Ferry, and the UPS one is way the hell out in North Portland.

My Drinky hasn't shipped yet.

! Hello

Drinky sits at home waiting for me to come play with him.

GAH! This sucks. Stupid school. :lol

Let's get to the important questions. What ways does the game let you torture your puppy? Do any of the following things happen/work?

Death
Sleep deprivation
Starvation
Throwing objects at it
Forcing it to wallow in its own feces
Beating
Exposing it to diseases

Okay, so I ditched C++ class, no big loss. :lol I'm home now with my copy of Shiba and Friends :) About to go over to my gf's house (where my ds is right now) to test it out. I work tonight 6:30-11:30 though, so expect blog action late tonight / early tomorrow.

Get out of this thread you freak!

Puppy Love is not made for people like you.

as for your question, none of the above takes place
puppies live in a benign and harmless world

You don't feed it it will not do tricks or listen to you, it will at most take naps all day.

I wake Drinky at 3am all the time, slow to get up but always does get up.

I had another passer-by contact today, so I'm going to try this a lot more often from now on. I put the DS in passer-by mode before I left the house for work, and on my journey to work, Chiharu's Labrador Retriever, Inui, visited. He was a cute little fellow, wearing a pair of sunglasses. He brought me a present too! A pulling rope toy. I'll let Drinky play with it later. In return, I gave a Mushroom toy. Chiharu is a pro-trainer though, so she probably already has one... oh, and she left me a voice message "Please be nice to Inui."

...and people say there is no community in this game. I weep for them :'(
Actually, I feel pretty bad for you importers because you won't get chance to try this out properly. It's a really nice feature. Maybe we should put some nice Japanese greeting on the blog for people who visit because of my message.

Another update on the passer-by functionality :)
I really should write a blog entry on this!

I headed into Shibuya with DCharlie at lunchtime, to check out the new releases, and get some DS stuff off the Download Kiosk at Bic.

Between the office and the station, I had already made contact with some guy called Tetsuya. His dog gave me a useless photograph, so I stuck it back in passer-by mode and decided to give the photo to my next visitor. Get to Shibuya and in the first shop, I noticed I had another visitor. This one left me a blue collar. Nice, I only have red and black in my shop. Stick it back in passer-by mode and go to the download kiosk - Utada's dog pops up straight away. It comes with a present - a nintendogs record - and also adds a new option to the reform shop - Japanese room. I didn't have chance to check either of them out, as I saved and reset my DS to download the Goemon demo. I'll have to let you know what they are like later.

So far I've got 5 friends on my friends list - 4 female and 1 male :O

Make a blog post talking about this passer-by mode and how it works, etc etc.

It will give the american people a nice impression, I would think.

You should pass the blog URL along in your notes (as you are already doing) but also tell them to pass the URL along as well, see if you can make it all viral and test how long before you get it back in a message.

EDIT: you could make a friends list on the blog with specific thank yous for the gifts they give you :lol

Holy shit! That sounds so damn cool! I wonder how Nintendog communities will take off in other countries. ^^;

Ok I came in here to ask a question. Personally I don't have a DS and even when I do get one, I'm never ever getting Nintendogs, I just don't like dogs, maybe if they released Nintenducks. :lol Anyway that's not the point. I have a younger sister who LOVES dogs (and assorted annoying animals), but we're never going to let a pet in this house due to err... issues regarding how we basically suck at looking after previous pets. Parents are busy, I hate animals and my sis isn't too responsible. Her birthday is coming up in July and I was thinking of getting her a DS + Nintendogs.

Except I'm facing a few problems:

- English Nintendogs.... when? I can read Japanese fine but she can't. ^^;

- Is one version really enough? Would she be missing out on anything besides other dog breeds? Or is each version complete in itself?

- Can the game actually hold a non avid-gamer's attention long enough? I know it's targetted towards non-gamers specifically but would it be worthwhile and be able to hold someone's attention? For example she used to play Dogz and Catz, but they were really *really* shallow and didn't have much of anything to hold someone's attention for long. I was browsing the website and it looked like there's quite a bit of meat in the game (neighbourhoold map, various competitions, tons of toys, etc) but how would you guys playing it feel if you weren't into games much at all? All she plays are really a few free Korean MMORPGs (hell some of them might be pay ones, I dunno) and only because her school friends play them too. I got her Crystalis and Zelda DX for the GBC a long time ago but I'm not sure if she ever beat them. -_-

Thanks! I'm glad Nintendogs is working out for you guys, truce okay? :D

No date yet. E3?

I believe you can "unlock" the other breeds over time...good trainers get good rewards!

The game has quite a lot to do, and different people will probably enjoy different aspects of it. For example, I much prefer to take my pooch for a walk than playing with it in the house. I know I have to do the latter for it to succeed in the obedience contest, but the walking mode is a lot of fun and good for Drinky's stamina.

If you stay in the house, there's a lot of stuff to do, and there appears to be a lot of items and toys you can unlock. From what mofo was saying, there's an RC plane and a toy piano, and I think there's other stuff too.

If you're lucky it might be out in July. I see it as a good summer game because people do a lot of travelling in the summer, so fingers crossed for her birthday :)

Yay thanks! Yeah RC Plane and Toy Piano sound fun. I was looking at the official site with the bubble blower and how the dog reacts to it, pretty neat. Still, why couldn't it have been Nintenducks... :lol

Hey guys! I picked up my copy of Nintendogs yesterday (Green, it was the only one left at my local import shop) and have been going nuts playing it ever since. I've got a healthy young shetland sheepdog named Drinky and we're eager to join the blog club if you guys are still accepting? I'll actually post. Promise!

Thanks for the updates on the passer-by mode, Johnnyram - it sounds awesome. I can't wait to give it a shot at E3 this year. Here's hoping some like-minded Drinky owners will be there!

The passer by thing sounds utterly brilliant.

How does that work? When you pass by someone else with the game, the DS' automatically start to exchange data?

Yep, exactly. You set up your passer-by mode. You give your dog a present to carry, then he starts to walk around town on your top screen and the bottom screen says "Searching... you can close your DS if you want". When a passer-by is detected, their dog will appear on the top screen with your dog. It'll run to you and bring a present when you open your DS. After you've opened the present, it'll play with your dog, and you can call them both to you and play with them if you want. It's really neat, and it avoids the potential embarrassment of playing a handheld game in public because people can swap dogs while the DS remains in their bag / pocket. Ingenious.

demi is my massa!!!!!!!!!!

If that doesn't work I'm totally gonna have to post a picture of my Drinky looking sad as a last resort. And you know I'd have to beat him and withhold food & drink to make him look that way for the picture. You don't want that, do you?!

anyone has a spare play-asia coupon .. i want to buy this game .. couldn't resist -_-

it costs less than $50 so you'll have to buy something else too. And don't get it via UPS.

My dachs finally turned up today after paying £20 charges which I'll complain about and get nowhere.

When do you have to start talking to your dog? Cause I don't want to be doing that at work....

Pretty much when you first get your dog. You gotta say it's name. You can just make something up like *mumble mumble*, then start a new dog when you come home...

:d

Or, play in the kennel the whole time at work! It's the bottom option.

i thought the minimum price for products you're buying should be 40$ to be able to use the coupons!? >_<

I just got a coupon with my nintendogs that seems to have 'no minimum' on it. PM me if you want to try it out.

BTW, anyone want my Dachs code? Its from a very rare £60 copy of Nintendogs :<

Hahahaaaa, you should see how much the Japanese room costs...
Anyway, my first house renovation is complete, so I went out and bought a Beagle to celebrate. My Beagle is a female called Coco. She's very patient so she's going to be my obedience contest hope... I'll start taking Drinky to the gym for the agility contest :)

Where's the Gym??

Also i have the Beagle. They are VERY forgetful.
Re taught her to sit, next morning she sneezes on command of Plonk your ass down

I'm practising my best Barbara Woodhouse voice - Si-ta!

I'm not sure what to call my first puppy. All this Drinky shit has clouded my mind.

How much and how big is it? 750,000?

Does it have the waterfall sound?

anyone else notice Fleas? Am I just seeing things?

finally played this for a little bit after I got back from japan..

got a Korgi named Cinder. Have tught her her name, Sit, and Lay Down so far. She still doesn't listen very well and I seem to have lost my frisbee that I bought for her... bah..

You have to download Utada's dog from the kiosk -_-;
I only have 80,000 now I've bought a new dog.
She likes the toys more than Drinky, but they get on really well together. Drinky rests his head on her and they sleep together.

the pull rope is AWESOME. you can play tug of war with your dog, pick the sucker up and throiw it against the wall.!!

HA HA HA HA
DOG CRUELTY TO THE MAX

I played this tonight, took my friend's dog for a walk, played some games, threw stuff at it, etc etc....

...and you guys are way too easily amused

Well Drinky finally arrived!

I made him a cute little Welsh Corgi, spunky little fellow. So far I've taught him 4 tricks: Sit, Laydown, Roll over and "bum." The last one, he just sorta turns around and sticks his bum in the air :lol It won't let me teach him anymore though, guess I'll have to wait until later.

I bought him a frisbee, he doesn't seem to understand that I want him to catch it. I'm sure he could if he just ran a little faster. I've taken him on a few walks, the first and second walk he ran into other dogs. One time getting beat up, the other time they just sort of stared at each other. He ate garbage, learned that garbage is icky. On our next walk, we went to the park to together, there was a Dachs there and some ginormous dog. I tried to teach Drinky how to catch the frisbee but he just teased the other dogs with it, eventually the big dog jumped on him :(

I bought him a brush, he seems to like that. We've found a tissue box and a bottle... I don't think he really likes either. I've also bought him food and water, and given him a sudsy bath. I tried to do a competition, but I guess I picked an obedience one. Drinky and I had no idea what the judges were telling us to do, so we failed that. Tried the frisbee competition too, but he still doesn't know how to catch it.

We need to work on his frisbee skills.

That's why he won't learn anything, is that the limit in a day message?

Yeah, it says "Drinky's head is full today. Teach him again tomorrow!"

Thanks! I got a message with some similar characters when I tried to do a competition, I'm sure it's just another limit per day thing.

I can't believe no one has posted about this yet:

Did You Know?

Japanese Judges Rate Nintendo's Puppies 'Perfect'
as DS Sales Increase Fivefold

Animal lovers and Nintendo fans in Japan are proving that it's
almost impossible to say no to a puppy. Nintendogs(TM), the new puppy
simulator for Nintendo DS(TM), hit Japanese stores April 21. In its
first week, it boosted daily sales of hand-held Nintendo DS systems
more than five times the average daily sales rate of the previous
seven weeks. It has become the fastest-selling DS game ever for
Nintendo while receiving top marks from critics.

Nintendogs, which launches in North America later this year, lets
players pick a puppy from a variety of breeds and train it to chase a
ball, go for a walk or learn tricks. The realistic puppies respond to
voice commands and to a rub or a tap on the touch screen of Nintendo
DS. Nintendogs makes use of amazing artificial intelligence.

But the appeal of Nintendogs goes beyond cuteness. Four
notoriously tough game reviewers scrutinized Nintendogs for Weekly
Famitsu, Japan's leading video game magazine. All four reviewers
returned with top scores of 10, for an extraordinary overall perfect
score of 40.

Some English-speaking fans already have imported copies of
Nintendogs for their Nintendo DS systems and are blogging about their
experiences. One example can be found at puppytimes.blogspot.com:
"Here I am, 30 years old and I'm talking to my virtual dog. Even more
alarming is how totally disarmed and attached I feel to the little
bugger already."
In addition, Nintendo has video and screen shots of
the adorable puppies in action at www.nintendo.com.
