The dumbest recent trends in gaming

Totally random question but lets get it out of the way

if you'r trying to play a ps1 game on your ps2, do you need a ps1 memory card or are the ps2 memory cards backwards compatible? i forget..

Certainly not recent by any stretch, but meh. I hate how you have to press Start when you load a game. WHY? It serves no purpose, Press Start to go to the menu. Just go straight to the bloody thing!

I'm noticing it's getting pretty bad with licensed titles, (the exclusive item for preorder at GameStop):

- X-Men Origins: Wolverine had an exclusive danger room
- Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 will have Juggernaut exclusively.
- Batman: Arkham Asylum will have Villain Challenge Rooms exclusively (apparently Scarecrow's).
- Ghostbusters has an exclusive suit.
- and tons more.

Seriously, I hate pre-ordering, I can find it quicker and cheaper at other retailers. So fucking annoying. I'm glad someone started a thread on this.

I wouldn't be so upset with the pre-order bonuses if they eventually showed up on the market place. Some times I can't afford every game I want. Don't punish me for not having a shitload of disposable income.

You need a PS1 memory card to save and load while playing a PS1 game on a PS2.

You can copy a PS1 save onto a PS2 memory card and store PS1 saves on a PS2 memcard, but you have to actually have the save file on a PS1 card for the PS2 to use the save.

This bothers me to no end on 360 games: stop making me select the hard drive as where I want to save games. I have no other memory devices attached. You should therefore automatically assume that I want to save my game to the hard drive. Stupid thing that pops up.

The other is non-campaign coop. I just generally don't like what I've tried so far.

108kb unlock downloads/ paying for content that is on the disc
paying for small shit like costumes, themes and avatars
announcements for announcements
exclusive demos/ DLC
a shooter has to be like CoD, in order to good :/
lack of split screen multiplayer
if game isn't 1080p/ 60 fps, it automatically sucks
too much hype for games these days (from media and gamers)
blind Wii hatred (come on guys, grow up)
music/ rythmn/ games that require a plastic toy
multiplayer > single player (seems like single player has taken a back seat)
arbitrary review scores (isn't new, but vg reviews should just be text IMO)
the fact that gaming is being watered down (shovelware, Madden, Guitar Hero, CoD, ect)...

Japanese devs doing the same old shit

I can probably name more....

Order of War
Brothers in Arms
Valor of War
Brothers of War
Medal of Valor
Brothers of Valor
Order of Duty

I think you catch my drift. Pretty much any half assed random combination of the words: honor, war, valor, medal, duty, brothers, war, etc. It is so tacky and creatively bankrupt.

Not really that, but the inability of developers to make games with text boxes for people that don't have HDTV's. Reading size 4 font is not fun, even if it is on an HDTV.

Every RPG needing an incredibly bizarre and complex leveling up/ability system.

Can't agree here. For me that's what makes them replayable and enjoyable. Simple basic leveling systems are just boring.

Game demo for preording said game is also pretty stupid.

This. I find it incredible dumb. And no I don't want to cancel my preorder after I get the demo. It's a waste of time.

I dont mind the Gamestop exclusives. I really have no problem with them whatsoever.

2 things that bug me now.

1. DLC thats on the disc - (Capcom)
2. Halo type energy regeneration in every shooter

But the thread with all the fake boxes was :lol

* Having to "Verify your Age" every time you watch a game trailer
This annoys the hell out of me. Not just for game trailers, but for anything on the internet. The most annoying thing is that I can't imagine it actually works to keep kids from viewing the content. Kids aren't idiots. If they want to see something, they'll just lie about their age.

Knowing their going to lie doesn't change the fact that those boxes relieve them of some liability. The alternative is not having the content posted at all.

* Exclusive preorder bonuses that are different at each store.
* Paid "Download Content" that's really just an unlock key for what's already on the disc
* Having to watch 5 unskippable company logos every time you boot up a game
* Having to "Verify your Age" every time you watch a game trailer
* DRM schemes that limit how many installs you can do but don't have a de-authorize option
This annoys me the most. I use steam so the DRM is not an issue for me and my computer blows.

Then have a "Click to confirm you are over 18" thing. Don't make me scroll through three separate dropdown boxes to input my age.

Also, the website should remember my birthday when I do it once. Like Gametrailers, even though you have a damn profile, you still have to verify your age every single time you watch a video for an M-rated game. Though that's more of an issue with poor site design than a dumb recent trend in gaming.

The removal or extreme simplification of basebuilding and resource gathering from every single fucking RTS game. I don't mind playing some without, but jesus christ, does it have to be every RTS?

I agree with your list, though.

Protip: Just change the year.

I do this all the time. Born in 1939? Sure.

But the most annoying thing is the years on the drop down menu end at like... 1996, so you have to click the arrow and grab the slider and pull it down. And it's a slow, clunky and unresponsive Flash-based drop down menu.

Why the hell can't they just ask, "Are you 18 years of age or older?" YES/NO? What is wrong with that?

And why do you have to keep doing the age verifications if you register an account with the site?

This, from the 1st word to the last.

Unlock codes for content already on the disk is the obvious answer.

Costume packs for $$$.

Why bother making useful DLC for games when you can put out a few outfits and watch the money come in.
This one right here. All those costume packs I bought for Soulcalibur 4
and enjoyed, goddamn you to hell, Namco,
should have been free. The same goes for Street Fighter 4, Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead Space, etc. DLC should be substantial; game changing, like that of Oblivion (sans roflarmor), Burnout Paradise and GTA4.

Stop nickle-and-diming your fans at the expense of your own integrity, devs. Make cool stuff worth paying for.

Huge announcements that always turn out disappointing.

Every game these days have to have multiplayer to be considered good.

Single player taking a backseat to multiplayer.

Verifying your age everytime I want to watch a trailer.

overhyped mainstream games that overshadow less popular games.

Gamers only buying games now that score 9's or 10's and will neglect anything that scores an 8 or below.

Shovelware

Too many generic FPS's and this is coming from someone who likes them.

Paying for petty DLC such as outfits and themes.

So many JRPG's have 17 year olds as main characters. How about some variety?

WHY CAN YOU NOT PAUSE MOST RPG'S DURING COMBAT!!!!!!??????

60fps is such a rarity these days and most games do not look that good to justify the sacrifice in framerate.

Being able to predict which games are going to bomb just because they are not traditional.

Exclusive demos are not a big deal to me since I own both systems, btu I would imagine how annoying it would be if I owned one.

I don't know if I would call it a recent trend but.. those f'ing stationary turret segments in shooters, I hate them.

This is even worse with the new Arcade units that have a built-in memory unit, that you can not remove, so now all games ask you for the storage location each time, even those that are smart enough to detect if there's only one storage device.

Stupid arse websites with numbers the continue to roll over with stupid little clues etc.... Really. Is it at all necessary.

Equating gore, nudity, and cursing to maturity.

Fake internet outrage over "controversial" topics. See discussions on the Konami game, RE5, etc.

.

Came here to post this. Especially for games that don't "learn" after going through that process once, and ask you every time where you would like to save your game.

Achievements. Don't really care about them. But they don't affect me so don't care if they are added to every single game.

exclusive characters in fighting games per console.

then dlc to unlock the ones you missed.

exclusive dlc for one console. timed or otherwise.

exclusive in game items for pre-ordering

exclusive demos for pre-ordering

People who would rather download stuff, possibly many megabytes from the internet, rather than a 108kb key.

Magazine Advertisement Announcements of Countdowns to Countdowns to Countdowns and Magazine Teaser in the magazine that had the ad in the first place with all the information censored to Countdown to day before E3 so we know there's going to be no real information at the end and then the actual announcement.

Of a game that's probably not coming this year.
