The Elder Scrolls Online to have monthly subs, is not F2P

So there is a item store as well to buy things with real money

holy crap subscription and item store, disappointing... I imagine this will completely tank as far as player base goes but I'm sure there will be some dedicated players spending literally thousands in the store.

so all this "doa" becasue of the pay per month model and yet no one says the same thing about FFXIV

I'm all set with f2p mmos, gee let's pay to win that's fun

$60 game, $15/month, and they are going to charge to change the name of your character? It just keeps getting better.

If they charged for the game but not a subscription, or had a small monthly fee and the game was free to buy I don't think you would see so much mockery. They are trying to monetize every single aspect of the game, and only one game has ever managed that.

Edit: Two games have managed that, sorry. And plenty have failed trying to accomplish it.

FFXIV has a large following from a previous mmorpg FFXI, which was also a subscription game.

FFXIV has also shown that it will be worth the price with the betas it had over the last few months.

being full retail price, or subscription based or a cash shop doesn't mean a game will fail, but having all 3 really increases the odds.

I will buy the atlas if one is released for this game.

Even if I don't buy the game, I'll buy the atlas.

I'm a sucker for game atlases and encyclopedias.

Especially an atlas for the Elder Scrolls world.

For console players, ZSO are looking into talking with Sony and MS to play ESO without a PSN/Xbox Live subscription.

Lizzy - What sort of “Fun Stuff” can we find at the cash shop?

Maria – I think [Matt Firor] might be able to answer that a little bit more than I can. Right now we’re not going into the cost of it because we’re still working out with Sony and Microsoft, making sure that all of the players are paying the same amount for the same experience, because we are delivering the same game on all four platforms. So we want to make sure that players have the same access on the game and not have to worry about subscriptions for their consoles as well as subscription for the game. So we’re still working on that which is why we’re holding off on costs right now.
Fat chance but who knows.

Yeah but those are free-to-play. Hopefully both Microsoft and Sony drop XBL/PS+ requirement for it.

Sony already said that subscription MMO's can be outside the Paywall too.

But considering Zenimax is not allowing cross play between PS4 and PC just because MS refuses to allow cross play on XBox systems, it wouldn't surprise me if they refuse to leave it outside the Paywall on PS4 when Microsoft tells them they can't do it on XBO.

Throw in an Xbox Live Gold subscription and this game becomes Pay to Pay to Pay to Pay.

Game + Sub + Gold sub + Online storefront goods.

Amazing.

So Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is subscription fee based and will be on the PS4. Where's the outcry for this?

For one, no one cares about FFXIV, also it's a continuation of another sub based mmo, also it probably doesn't look like shit, also it doesn't screw over fans of the franchise with the blandest gameplay possible.

But mostly, no one cares about it.

Happy to help.

FF has a fanbase. ESO is attempting to cash in on the buyers of Skyrim by providing WoW gameplay and a subscription model that also encompasses a "please pay us for trivial shit" F2P microtransaction model.

A continuation of a very poorly received MMO. Okay, so the new FFXIV might be good and it might look good but....

How do you know TESO plays like shit? Have you played it? Reading those who have, they've said it plays pretty well and it looks good. Seeing some leaked gameplay from the beginning of the game where you start in Coldharbour, I thought it looked very good and very in line with TES games.

Also, how are they screwing their fanbase over? Because there's a vanity shop? I agree $60 is asking too much for the package but besides that, where's the screwing over? Hell, ZSO is trying to talk with Sony and MS to see if they can get it so players don't have to pay for PS Plus and Xbox Live to play the game.

However, fact is I don't believe the sub model will last. I give it no more than a year before it goes f2p because I don't feel it can compete with WoW and sub models are just not popular nowadays. That said, I still don't believe this will be a "shit" game.

I think it will be f2p in 9 months like swtor was and then I'll jump in and try it out. I think they probably already have plans for when they go f2p (hence the cash shop) so why not just do what GW2 did and make it play to buy. I guess they think they can make more money this way, which is understandable, but a little sad as well.

I can't not play this at some point due to my being a huge sucker for anything Elder Scrolls, but I'll definitely wait for the game to go on sale down the line due to the subscription. I'm certain I won't have to wait long.

Also it'll give the servers time to die off so that I can pick the one with any population left. Flashbacks of the ghost town my SWOTOR server became within a couple months weeks still send chills down my spine.

A bit of an "old" article but didn't see it posted here.

The Elder Scrolls Online dev explains decision to charge £9 monthly subscription

The Elder Scrolls Online director Matt Firor has explained to Eurogamer why Zenimax Online Studios has decided to charge a monthly subscription for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game at a time when most observers consider the business model outdated.

Zenimax raised eyebrows this week when it announced that it will charge £8.99 / $14.99 a month to play TESO when it launches in the spring of 2014 - that's across PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Before explaining the decision, Firor insisted: "this isn't a referendum on free-to-play."

"I play those games all the time," he said. "This isn't like: those aren't valid."

The decision was made for two reasons, Firor said: to ensure monetisation would fit appropriately within the established Elder Scrolls experience, and to fund post-release content.

"When you're in an Elder Scrolls game, you're in a world," he said, explaining the former point. "We don't want players to hit monetisation fees when they're in the world.

"It's like, I go into a dungeon, if I don't have access to the dungeon it pops up a window: you don't have access to this, go buy 50 credits. We didn't want that experience. That's not an Elder Scrolls experience.

"We wanted to do monetisation outside of the game. So, if I pay for a month at a time, I have 100 per cent of the game. I don't have to worry about paying one more cent. I'll never run into a pay gate and I'll be in the world."

Explaining the latter point, Firor said: "The other reason is we really want a steady forecastable revenue stream so we can do constant updates. We're working on post-launch content right now, and we want to make sure we're covering all of the new content, which will hopefully be released every month or six weeks, for as long as people want to play the game.

"When I talk about new content, I mean, we're launching with the Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild questlines, but we're going to launch the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood at some point as part of the regular updates. And those are 15 hours of content a piece. We're talking major new stuff, which is going to be coming out constantly. And the way to do that the best for us is with a subscription."

Firor concluded: "Everyone needs to make their own decisions. We picked the one that we felt matches with us the best."

The Elder Scrolls Online is a huge investment on the part of Zenimax, which owns Skyrim publisher Bethesda.

TESO developer Zenimax Online was founded in 2007, at which time it began creating a new game engine to support the project. Work on the game itself didn't begin until 2009 - so it's been in development for over four years.

The monthly subscription applies to all versions of the game: PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Firor said. The team is in talks with Microsoft and Sony about how this will be implemented on console given both companies have online multiplayer paywalls in place.

I don't think it will be DOA, but the subscription plan won't last. I really would love to see this game do very well. I love the Elder Scrolls universe and I'm anticipating the MMO. I understand where they are coming from with the subscription model but in reality, I just don't see it working out after more than a year.

From what I hear escort quests are in however "he'll also walk faster than you walk, but slower than you run"

I can deal with a sub if it's really good but not a fan of micro transaction stores.

This just makes me think they know the game is ass and are trying to suck in as much money as possible early on at launch.
