The Essential Genesis Games List

Some of those ratings are very much personal opinions, though... I'd rank Lightening Force higher than Thunder Force III, the Hardball series are my favorite baseball games on the system (Hardball III, still one of the best baseball games ever...), TMNT Tournament Fighters might be halfway decent but has a lame 3-button control scheme (2 really, with one being taunt) while all of the other decent Genesis fighting games support six buttons, and is horrible compared to the SNES game and why the heck is Golden Axe 3 ranked in "Great" while Golden Axe 1 is in "Good"? Isn't it near-universally considered to be the worst of the three?

Oh yes, and Sub Terrania is awesome! "Not for everybody", bah... it's great for sure. Though an appreciation for space sims would help, as it really plays more like one of those than a shmup in a lot of ways. I loved it. :)

Removed the skippeable stuff and bolded the great Genesis.

Rolo to the Rescue deserves a mention, nice platformer where in each level, you had to rescue other animals that had abilities which would help you progress to the next.

Zero Tolerance anyone?

It's a FPS which has digital voices, 3D fog and blood splatter on walls. Trust me, on the Megadrive, that was damned impressive back then.

I've updated the list again. I probably should change the title because instead of just essential games, there are some games that are just "good" and not really "essential." Also, this list is more of my personal list, so I've put a little bit of extra emphasis on platformers, and I avoided sports, racing, and fighting games because like I said before, I really don't like playing old games in those genres.

Digital voices...yes. Blood spatter...yes. 3D fog...say what? I played a few levels of this (and the unfinished sequel) and never saw the 3D fog.

Have a video or screenshot to help us out here?

SonicMegaDrive's list is pretty damn keen.

Except I'd throw Super Hydlide in the "Not for everybody" pile. Sure it's a bit hard to get into at first but there's a lot of interesting ideas and music is great.

Anyway...

Alien Soldier- Required play, Treasure game which emphasizes boss fights and speed. Rather tough but an awesome pick up and play title.
Decap Attack- Disturbing and gross US release of Psycho Fox. It's a fairly mediocre platformer and the awful changed art is just painful.
D&D: Warriors of the Eternal Sun- Good yet rather short AD&D based RPG.
Dragon's Fury- Genesis version of Devil's Crush for the TG16 I do believe. Also an inferior version.
Dynamite Headdy- Required action-platformer by Treasure, among the best the Genesis has to offer.
Forgotten Worlds- Pretty decent port of the arcade game, though the continue system is odd(you can continue as long as one person is alive in a two-player game)
Gaiares- Overrated shooter with some nice bosses and a neat weapon system, shame everything else is dull and lousy.
Hellfire- Worthwhile shooter. Unlike some you actually have to move around and find the right angle to attack bosses from, neat idea.
Mercs- Not as good as the arcade version(but still a nice port) but there is a Genesis exclusive mode that's pretty damn hard.
MUSHA- Not the best Genesis shooter but it hits all of the points well and it's fun to play.
Mystic Defender- Older action-platformer. The final boss is
naked
if you're into that sort of thing..other than that very skippable.
Ranger X- Another Required game. Awesome in every way.
Red Zone- Kind of meh but the game is a showcase for special effects on the Genesis. Tons of scaling and rotation effects, worth it for that at least.
Ristar- Required platformer. Slow-paced and a wonderful ride all around.
Sagaia- I believe this is simply Darius 2 re-named. I couldn't tell you much aside from that because I've only played the arcade release.
The Lion King- Good platformer though by the time it came out I was tired of all the Disney/Virgin platformers. Though it plays well the concept as a whole was so tiring I quit when I got stuck towards the end.
X-Men 2: The Clone Wars- Better than the first game but it's a pretty frustrating title all around.

Viewpoint is a great port from the Neo-Geo; I'd definitely pick that up too.

They had Viewpoint for Genesis/MD? Surprised people know of Trouble Shooter and Battle Mania 2[Japan only], Comix Zone needs more mention, Toy Story was a pretty cool game too, Bonanza Bros. makes a great 2 player game, Ristar..what Sonic would have played like if they did not go with a hedgehog...and would still be awesome, Pulseman needs more attention, Panorama Cotton[Japan only] made me spend money (that I do not regret), Quackshot and World of Illusion...and Aladdin for the Disney win, Ranger "freakin'" X...play it...now!, Dynamite Headdy because he rules and his games needs more praise, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is really Puyo Puyo[Japan only] in disguise...so he gets an A, Konami...they knew their stuff, which gave rise to Treasure, forgetting Alisia Dragoon is a crime, as is forgetting WonderBoy 6 (or is that WonderGirl?)[Japan only], and that's all I can think of for this late night.

What's so frustrating about Clone Wars? I love the game, personally -- always thought it was a great action title with pretty smooth controls, and the free use of mutant powers was an excellent touch.
