The 'evolution' of Battle Mode in Mario Kart

This shit was the GOAT

Too bad MK8 won't have something like this, but I have faith it'll be good. Everything else in this game looks fantastic, I can't believe they'd half-ass the Battle Mode.

Did you play the old ones? The new ones are garbage, but the old games had the good stuff
Super Mario Kart is the only great one. Even if it was only 2 players, it was the most amazing fun with clever arenas and great use of items. Perfect balance. In MK64 the arenas were crap except the dual layer place, but it was too big. So the battle mode in MK64 was only half decent if that. MK8 brings something interesting and new to the table, so maybe it brings back some of the fun in battle mode, but there's no beating SMK battle mode.

SNES had the only good battle mode. If 64 levels of quality are what people want, then I'm perfectly fine with them getting rid of arenas.

It's clear that many of you have not played Mario Kart DS.

MK:DS easily takes the cake for Battle. It has Block Fort, 8 player solo/team, Balloon Battle elimination, and Shine Runners.

Jury's still out on MK8's Battle. We don't even know yet if there's another Battle mode. The brief overview trailer of the battle maps doesn't look so promising since what they've shown looks so flat and long. I actually dug the team Balloon respawns for points in MKWii/7. I love having the more-the-merrier chaos.

Not only that, it had more strategy. As long as you were perfectly still you could blow into the microphone to blow up additional balloons. You could have up to 5 at once and replenish your supply at the risk of being an easy target. You can still increase your supply in the games that came after but you need a mushroom to do it.

This thread made me go rip the textures and remake Block Fort 64 in Unreal Engine 4.

MK DS was great - but you also needed 8 friends with their DS for the optimal local MP experience. So that was something that never really clicked for me.

The games website makes a huge point about showing everything the game got. Leaving this mode out and not showing it, when everything else is shown (like the new Rainbow Road) is essentially not having it at this point. They will maybe hide a few characters or a cup, but they won't hide a selling point.

SNES Battle was my favorite growing up. N64 was second

The music. the music!

You know what? Why not - I just tweeted @Nintendo, @NintendoUK, @NintendoAmerica and @NintendoEurope with #BlockFortMK8.. Dunno if that will be seen or answered, but what the hell.

ah no, are we watching the same thing? Unless I am missing the sarcasm, every character is making sounds. Characters, karts, items etc. Toad doesnt have Peache's, Yoshi's and Bowsers voice all rolled into one.

Here is when player 1 is dead, still has sound for everyone.

I dont know if i'm imagining things here but only Peach has sound here. I mean i watched Yoshi go through itemboxes and slip on bananas and not hearing a thing. Am i going insane here?

While I would like the option of arenas, I think modified courses could work pretty well, honestly!

I remember sometimes even in block fort you'd just start doing laps in reverse of each other, basically jousting with items every time you came across the other guy. I know that sort of thing shouldn't be enforced as the only way to battle but it's still very fun.

I hope they do modify the courses to add some block fort-type verticality here and there.

Yeah, if you are going to ask for a retro track make note of the ones that have already been used:
SNES Battle Course 4
N64 Block Fort
N64 Skyscraper
N64 Big Donut
GBA Battle Course 3
GBA Battle Course 1
GCN Pipe Plaza
GCN Cookie Land
DS Twilight House
DS Palm Shore

Sucks, I was so ready for Double Deck in Mario Kart 8.

yosh grabs item box sound at 5:26
yoshi jump sound at 5:28
uses star sound at 5:33

the reason you dont hear some of the yoshi item grab sounds is because he has a star on, and is going through fake item boxes that Peach laid down. So you hear her when he hits her boxes.

I hope we get some DLC that adds arenas to MK8 battle mode, but if not I'm sure I'll be happy with the modified courses. I was just really hoping for some crazy anti-grav arenas.

The balloon stuff is what turned me off of the battle mode in mk ds. 64 is still king for me.

I'm not gonna lie, my excitement has gone down a bit for Mario Kart 8. It'd be nice to change the title up a bit. Had no clue Arenas were gone.

I love MK Wii but battles and the arenas were not particularly great.

The mode has taken a back seat for many years.

From what people have said, MK8 at least is a mechanical improvement. But it's not like battle mode has suddenly gone off a cliff. It's been tumbling down since DD and or DS and the existence of actual arenas didn't help.

It's too soon to jump the gun on this one. The battle mode in MK8 could very well be mediocre at best but it could also end up great or at the very least, divisive. I'd hold out before judging and letting it deflate your hype.

In my case, MK has been mostly about racing over the last few iterations so developments surrounding Battle Mode don't really have much bearing. I will say I hope it's at least fun as an alternative to races but I know the races are where the vast majority of my time will be, like always.
