The f*** Canadian telecoms thread - Cheap iPhone plan inside!

Well said. Agree 100%

You can get an OK plan with Wind (with "fair usage data"), a selectionf of mostly crap phones and awful customer service, or for an extra $20 a month get much better service, faster speeds, and a better selection of phones.

Crap phones like the S3, Iphone 5, Nexus, BB10?

Virgin's Gold plan is only 35$ for the iPhone. Thing is I have to buy their expensive 400$ iPhone 5:|

In related news, the courts have apparently given Telus the okay to purchase and dissolve Mobilicity, in a bid to beef up the number of towers Telus owns.

This apparently fits with Canada's plan to expose Bell/Rogers/Telus to more competition, without y'know... actually exposing them to more competition.

Dag, 450 million in the red? That's no joke. In fairness this has nothing to do with competition, just business maintenance.

Wind is a fucking joke. It has an absolutely wretched network and it's networks like that (as well as the major networks banding together) that's holding back wireless internet access.

It is not like they do it on purpose, they don't have the money to upgrade their network. They aren't holding anything back if they've only been expanding their network and moving forward.

Hm, will subscribers be grandfathered into the plans when they get bought out? If so, I'm jumping into Wind or Mobilicity ASAP. Reminds me of the Rogers buyout of Fido where everyone on CityFido got to keep their grandfathered plan.

Well you save $25-$35 a month so you save $300-$420 onto your yearly budget, which makes up for it and I'm assuming this is no contract/tab?

I have to look into it, but I'm surprised so few have talked about Virgin. Seems like no one uses them, yet the plans seem pretty good.

Virgin, Koodo, and increasingly Fido have pretty much the exact same prices. I do think that currently the Tier 2 brands are probably the best for most people unless they're on a good retention plan from the Tier 1 brands.

I say brands because they're all the same companies anyway.

Well, the big three are basically protected from international competition by the Canadian government, but that means they have to obey the whims of the Canadian government, and the government said they wanted more competition in this sector, so they allowed the new entrants to jump in, but the new entrants are expected to start from zero and compete uphill against giants who are sometimes accused of conspiring to keep the little guys down, because the last thing the guys on top want is more competition.

Also in recent news, Wind, Mobilicity, and Public Mobile just pulled out of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, because they were tired of their "industry representatives" constantly endorsing the positions of the top three companies, even when those positions conflict with the positions of the bottom three companies.

i need a new cell plan, i have an unlocked phone.

right now im considering these options:

telus plan take over
550 Anytime Minutes
Unlimited texting
Unlimited Nationwide My10
5gb data
Free evenings and weekends at 5pm
Caller ID/VM
30 months contract remaining
$55 + Tax a month

has the data i want but 30 months at nearly $60 is yuk.

wind
$30 unlimted plan

wind has the best price but lacks overall coverage and theres only one tower in my area. complaints of slow data speed and network issues due to wind stopping expansion/improvements while waiting to be sold off is also a concern. im in the southern outer regions of the edmonton area.

koodo
$45 promo
400 anytime minutes
canada wide calling
unlimited text
Free evenings and weekends at 5pm
Caller ID/VM
no contract
1GB data (add data $5/500MB)
$40/month since im bringing my own phone

no contract is nice and this promo is solid if it werent for the skimpy 1GB data.

i hate the telecoms in this country. over inflated prices and now they're pushing low amounts of data. out of these three which seems like the best deal. also if you've used wind in the edmonton/nisku/leduc areas how was the service?

Ok, I'm looking at the $150 HTC One over at Rogers.

I'm currently on an iPhone 4 and only have three months left in my contract.

My current plan is:

Monthly Price Plan Charges: $55.00/mth
Includes all monthly fees
150/Unltd Early Eve/Wkds Plan
150 Wkday & Unltd Eve/Wknd Min
6 GB9

+

Smartphone Value Pack$15.79/mth

It all comes out to around $88 a month.

----------------------

I don't think I use much of that 6 gb plan monthly. Right now, midway through my pay period I have used around 210mb. I'd still like to leave myself a 1 - 3 gb cushion though.

As for the other stuff. I think I can get a way better deal than I am getting now. I feel like I'm being ripped off at this point. That smartphone value pack includes my call display/voicemail and the like but I see plans that just bundle and include all of that now.

Can someone take a quick look at this and tell me what I should be looking for.

Thanks.

I'd love a plan around $55 - $60.

I'm on the 20 dollar wind plan with a nexus 4. Of course, no data, but there are wifi hotspots where I need them.

And if I do need data, I turn it on and I get 100 megs for $5.

Or you can get the $30 plan and have unlimited data. I'm going to be pissed if Rogers buys Wind.

That smartphone value pack can be switched immediately for a $12.79 one. If you switch to an $80 plan you'll get CD/vm, unlimited minutes, 3gb of lte data, unlimited text.

It's a little cheaper than your current plan with more minutes and enough data for you.

For $55 you only get 150mb of data.

Thanks for the input. I'll weigh my options.

Edit: I think that deal would be more expensive in the long run. $80 + tax would be slightly more than I'm paying for slightly less data.

maybe look at the current koodo $45/month plan. 400 minutes, unlimited incoming, 1GB data. if you bring your own phone it's $40/month. extra data is $5/500MB so even if you used up to 3GB it's $30 cheaper than your current plan and theres no long distance charges for voice/data.

It clearly onlyc references the hardware. You're dreaming if you want plan matches

yea i didnt read the fine print
Price match applies to 2 or 3-yr term device price only (excluding any other applicable competitor coupons or discounts).
Price match will not apply to competitors plans. Any applicable plan criteria to be met to satisfy Rogers 2 or 3-yr device price eligibility (i.e. minimum monthly service fee requirements, specified type of plan etc.) will continue to apply.

Switched to Wind in March and i'm in heaven. Between the wife and I we pay 55 dollars a month and everything is unlimited. A lot of people complain about reception but with one exception (when I went to the hospital to get my toe relocated and stitched up - no bars in the x-ray waiting room) it's been flawless. Phone is the Galaxy Note II.

That said, apparently Wind is considering dumping their Canadian operations and selling to one of Robelus....I hope that it's all a smokescreen.

they are definitely selling. best case scenario they keep existing wind customers and users get to reap the rewards of better coverage. worst case is they send you a 30 day notice to pay any tab and fuck off.

so i ve cracked the screen of my loner phone (my phone is being repaired for something else). am i fucked? (on wind btw) like i am thinking of getting it repaired third party style, if i can. but i am stressing out right now cuz i really don't need this extra cost on my hands.

What kind of phone is it? Maybe you can replace it with a ppd phone? Loaner phones are a scam nowadays.

If you have an unlocked or Telus-locked phone, and not currently tied to a term contract, Koodo prepaid is a decent option. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 on ebay last year, bought a Koodo prepaid sim, and have been happy ever since. I'm on the cheapest plan, which is $15/mo for unlimited messaging, voicemail, call display, call waiting, and conference calling. Then you buy boosters which don't expire. I don't use much voice so I'm still on the same voice booster I bought last September. 1GB data boosters cost $35 though, which is a bit steep, but they also don't expire. So if you don't talk much, and want data, but aren't streaming videos constantly on your phone, then this could work pretty well for you.

I was initially going to go with Wind, but was turned off by the poor coverage. Koodo runs on the Telus network so coverage is good and you even get LTE if your phone supports it. There's no hidden/access fees or other nonsense. You can administer everything yourself, including registering and porting over an existing phone number online. I've never had to talk to anyone from Koodo, other than buying the sim card at a booth in a mall.

Rogers customer here.

2000 anytime North America minutes
Unlimited nights, weekends and incoming calls.
Unlimited in/out Canada text messages
3 GB data - "teatherable"
Voice mail, Caller ID

$80 per month, 3 year contract.

Currently using the BB9900, debating on a hardware upgrade to the Q10 or the Nexus 4, or keeping the 9900 for another year as it's perfect as an email machine.

LG optimus 2x.
If you're looking to get a new phone, your best bet is probably to check your local Superstore/Walmart/Best Buys and see if their Koodo kiosk has the "Samsung Galaxy S II X" in stock, because that one works on Wind as well as Koodo/Telus, and it should cost $150 on the Tab, plus $100 upfront, but then they give you $100 worth of Superstore/Walmart/Best Buy gift cards (assuming that promotion is still running), so it basically only costs $150 and some hassle. Cancel the phone as soon as you get home (you'll have to pay the Tab), unlock it, and you can use it with Wind. It's for new customers only, so you can't port-in your old number, you have to sign up/cancel. The phone's about equal to the Galaxy Nexus that Wind used to offer, not as good as a Galaxy S3, but much cheaper, and would be a good upgrade from your LG Optimus 2X.

With Wind, you can't really get around paying for phones.

But I think you should definitely take the phone around to some repair places first and see how much it costs to repair, if they even can repair it.

the thing is its not my phone. its a loaner phone i got to replace the phone i gave to them to repair my phone. so i have to give this phone back when it comes time to pick up my phone.

Public Mobile is believed to be seeking a buyer or financial partner, and Wind Mobile's Dutch owner, Vimpelcom, has also suggested it would be interested in selling its stake in Wind to another buyer.

gonna be back to the big 3 in a few years

So I guess I shouldn't go get a phone from Mobilicity tomorrow... : ( Guh, I need a new phone and plan and I just don't know who to go with anymore.

What are your opinions on koodo and virgin, as I live in Nova Scotia those two seem like the only "cheaper" options compared to the big three. Now I still have 2 years left on my Telus contract but, when I switch I still what to get a top model Android, and it appears you have to shell out significantly more cash upfront to get those with koodo and virgin.

ive heard people buying phones off contract and selling them after a year or two for 3/4 of the original price and then buying a new phone. but in terms of kodoo v virgin. haven't really heard much about em.
