The first version of Bionic Boots will let you run up to 25 MPH

This sounds like an idea that would work better in general with a powered exoskeleton to support both the users body and movements and give the "boots" some that can handle the increased strain and demands of running so fast.

This looks really bad for your joints and bones... the guy's posture looks terrible, but what do I know. I'd love to try it. It also looks like he's just trying to stay balanced the whole time while running in these clips, throwing his arms out, etc.

How exactly do these stilts make you faster than ordinary running? Would a longer stride really make up for the unnatural motion?

Once you got used to them, yes. Based on the picture, it looks like it increases your stride length by several times. You aren't moving your legs as fast, but each step covers way more distance.

Also, since you are not moving you legs back and forth nearly as fast, you can probably keep up the speed a lot longer than you could a sprint. Especially if you aren't conditioned for long distance running.

My first thought. And the boots on Justice World from Red Dwarf.

It's in the OP:

While we have these very different devices around us in terms of urban transportation, the bionic boot has the advantage over other rideable devices because you can go through traffic and go over any terrain, jump up on curbs, and you can walk straight into work without having to lock up your bike or park your car.

Being able to just walk into the building and keep them under your desk is pretty efficient.

Through traffic sounds dangerous and I'm don't know about you but I don't have to go over many different terrains when I go to work. You'll also probably bump your head on every door frame. And I bet it takes longer putting these on than unlocking your bike.

Your power armor is going to need something for its feet.

Ok this renders all my points invalid.

This looks pretty cool and would be nice for suburban areas that aren't that crowded.

But you'd probably need a helmet and pads or something, since slipping and falling at 25 mph at that height will not be pretty.

I mean, that's pretty cool, but I'd probably rather just have one of those hover board type things for smooth surfaces and just hike normally in tougher terrain. I'm not sure the added weight would be worth the speed increase while hiking.

Also, I don't really see what's so inconvenient about locking up a bike.

Biking is more convenient than carrying these things around would be.

Most of the time you have to lock you bike up outside somewhere. Not only is that dependent on there being somewhere to actually do that, but it leaves it vulnerable to getting stolen outside. With these you could walk all the way to your desk (or whatever), take them off and store them under your desk or in a locker or something. Sounds more convenient to me.

The video in the OP was posted in 2013, so yea.
That explains a lot. I knew I had seen these before a long while ago.

Yeah these are alot older than 4 years. 10 atleast, my brother had a pair as a teenager and they've been gathering dust ever since. Won't catch on at all and far from a new invention.

His running posture looks incredibly awkward. Doesn't look great for the joints, but then running already isn't as far as I know.

And what happens when you trip, that's going to hurt.

That YouTube video is nearly 4 years old. Let's hope they built something lighter weight because the amount of shifting the runner had to do tells me those are heavy as fuck

Haven't these things been around for years?

I think I've seen people use them. And here in Germany there was that guy that got paralyzed while trying to jump over a running car with boots like this on live TV :(

Still waiting for a non-aquatic hoverboard (not one of those half segway things).

Wouldn't mind trying these out for fun once though.

I could see a criminal outrunning the police on these and getting away! Especially so if the next gen are more discreet/compact and allow you to go even faster.

I'm like 98% percent sure these already exist in an almost identical form, they're called running stilts or something. It's also a real shitty video, you can move pretty fast with them but this guy doesn't seem to have the greatest mastery of his invention and looks like he's desperately trying not to smash his face on the ground.

Looks fun to me, but falling from that height and speed must be pretty painful. I've seen things like this before and have always wanted a pair.

Dude is running weird, like he's trying to hold it in before he makes it to the toilet or something. Also doesn't seem to be moving very fast.

How do these things make you faster?

Looks really uncomfortable, the guy is basically running on his heels, must be absolute hell on the hips and lower back..
