the full Nomura interview from Famitsu

She was a slut? Really? Wasn't she just singing and searching for Tidus?

Did she even took one dick in the whole game?!
You will never know what she was doing during those 2 years after FFX.

Versus character will be interesting? Good, I'm interested. Now don't disappoint me by making him turn out to be like another anime archetype.

Nope, its a fanservice game anyways. Pretty clear what they were going for with Rikku

The Versus guy likes it up the butt, doesn't he? :/

I don't know why people continue to think he's implying that the guy is gay. It sounds very much like some have speculated that he's actually arrogant. Which is his point about how protagonists generally don't have a strong personality.

well nvm that

He just seems to me that he's going to be a prick. Which is awesome.

And he's going to change the character? But they already did CG, can they really change character's costume now that the CG is finished?

Nomura: The Versus protagonist is not a character with a Squall-like or Cloud-like personality like everyone is thinking now. He is a type that has not been seen in the generations of the series yet. For a long time now, I have wanted to try making a character like him, but I hesitated because he is a type of character that might fall close to “out of bounds.”

Meaning what? He's gay? That'd be something new.

Btw. I don't like that current design is a "prototype" and that he'll look completely different.

I like him the way he's now, I'm almost sure that they'll give him lot's of blink and jewelry in the final version.

Burp.

It's probably a new thing.

Either the character has to look like a girl (aka Vaan) or is gay.

He's not referring to out of bounds in that type of way, he's referring to it in a gaming way. As he said, generally with protagonists the goal is to get you to like the character so they don't try to make them have a strong personality. Once you make someone arrogant, as it seems this guy might be, you're automatically going to make some people hate him because they don't like people like that. He even points out how the type of role this character usually falls into is a secondary role where it wouldn't matter if you disliked him or not because they aren't the center of attention.

I would think making him arrogant would be more 'out of bounds' from a Japanese perspective than him being gay.

Selfishness and thinking too highly of yourself would go against traditional Japanese values

That makes sense. And if it's true, then yawn. I wouldn't mind a Kefka-like protagonist, though =X

If you watch the trailers he acts abit arrogant to with the way he dispatches all those enemies. He's not excited about it, he's doing it like he's almost annoyed that they'd even bother trying to fight against him.

once again, a FF thread becomes:

85% idiotic clusterfuck of bad jokes, Nomura hate, and bitching
15% people trying to have legitimate discussion

*slow clap*

glad it's calmed down a bit on Page 2. Let's try to keep it that way, lads.

So yeah, I'm also concerned with this "total redesign" of Versus' hero. Will they really just redo all they've already done? Maybe that's not as hard as it sounds, I don't know, but it makes me wonder if Wada pulls down ANY kind of deadline on these projects? This is when duckroll follows up with "They have plenty of time until PS3 has an even mediocre install base in Japan lawl".

Just makes me wonder if Nomura (like Akira Yamaoka) gets a little drunk before these interviews. Some of the inconsistencies are bizarre to me.
Makes me wish there were more interviews with Kitase and Toriyama.

I'm really excited, though. I just expected more than 3 FFXIII main characters (not counting summons) to have been shown by now. Hopefully soon.
Square showing off the White Engine @ GDC. What better way to show it off than *drumroll* FFXIII GAMEPLAY!

...fuckers will probably just show that real-time background rotating of Cocoon that was shown a year and 4 months ago. -_-

Maybe he just cusses like a sailor. And in English, since Japanese doesn't really have actual curse words.

I look forward to Lightning in the game.

The more I hear about her the more I like this character. Hopefully it means more female leads that aren't there for show. Instead they are fully developed, realized, and breaking down the norms of a typically backwards view of females.

Defuser said:
Actually they do, but choose not to use it.

Really? I taught English in Japan for a year and they were utterly, completely confused by the idea of words that are inherently bad. They were like, "What's a bad word? If it's bad, why do you have it at all? Why invent a word that isn't supposed to be used?"

And I heard that from my students ages 16 - 55.

Funny thing is, lightning is probably more muscly (or less fat) than 90% of gaf...If you look at her arms she is def more muscular than most guys (if that is chubby fat)....butch isnt nice...in the least

HK-47 said:
Lightning wishes she was The Boss

Well the description at least is similar to The Boss. Whether they go all the way to make her like that is another issue. They seem to be trying to do something very different with both the the leads though than from what's been normal in the series.

Thank God the irrational Nomura hate has died down by this page (seriously, how can he be the worst thing to happen to Square-Enix if Final Fantasy sales have only gone up since he started working there?).

I think Lightning is definitely a tough person, and all the people doubting that are probably concentrating too much on her looks. I mean, the one trailer we saw she kicked the crap out of like 10-15 guys, that's hardly a delicate little rose like Yuna, Aeris, or even Ashe, now is it?

Then, about the yet unnamed protagonist of Versus XIII, his outfit is temporary, isnÂ’t it?
Nomura: We intend to completely redo his design.

I am so so happy to have a real confirmation of this. PLEASE get rid of the generic coat, please please please.

Nomura: Yes. (Haha) There are probably people who dislike his type.

What's interesting is everybody saying "Is he gay?" That there's a thousand homophobes who always flock to Final Fantasy threads just to say "LOL metrosexual" doesn't surprise me, but this is practically admitting it :P

well it won’t be a soppy story like that. It will adopt a more general “road movie” (a specific type of journey genre, not a road trip movie. >__>; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_movie) sense.

...

They have not banded together for any purpose or destiny. This lot, who are always horsing around find themselves at the heart of the story by chance.

I like, I like. I would hope that this story isn't so much of an epic scale battle over the fate of the planet, but that may be too much for me to hope for.

The only thing I don't like about the story so far is that the main character is a Prince, in the only developed country on the planet who surely has many enemies fighting after his crystal... and he's just a schoolboy horsing around? WTF? I'd either like a serious Prince who takes shit seriously, or a non-Prince who can horse around, but the combination just seems downright stupid. Hopefully it works okay.

I have a question. Is his label currently "Prince"?

Because I feel like that's already a good name.

And if it is Prince and they do change it, would he be "Formerly Known as Prince"?

I haven't personally liked the Final Fantasy series since he became so prominent there, but I'm not about to claim he's hurting S-E or anything ridiculous like that.

i don't mind his character designs at all. i think they're pretty damn good actually. i just think when you ask him--or the majority of character designers with whom i've read interviews--the reasoning behind their design decisions, they're almost uniformly obvious platitudes that would do nothing to actually create interesting looking characters.

Umm, I dont think any game since VII has screamed stereotypical anime. Even IX was a more classic look. VIII, X, X-2, XI, XII and now XIII have all adopted a very realistic look in their characters. You are looking for the Kingdom Hearts and Dragon Quest series if you want anime

Okay, I'm off base on a few things. No problem admitting when I'm wrong. You're right, the FF games generally do have really nice designs, and IX in particular I thought looked great (even though it's one of my least favs in the series). I think Nomura is a very talented character designer, but I think everything he does outside of that is a bit of a wash. Come on, letting him direct Advent Children? No wonder it was garbage. But seriously, I always do enjoy the designs in FF games. I thought everyone in XII looked good. I guess I really would just like a bit of a shake up in the art direction, that's all.

About the comment I made about trying to make models that looked like Amano's artwork, I think the CG in the DS remake of FFIV has come the closest. I think the characters have a really unique look to them, even if they do all look female (I'm fine with that, doesn't really bother me).

Sorry, didn't mean to cause such Nomura hate.

Would you like to see the main character being gay? Cmon. When they look feminine it's lame, but if he's gay, and there's actually use of his gayness in the game, i think most people would admit that's pretty lame and a huge barrier.

I probably wouldn't play the game, i don't mind if a secondary character is gay, but the main character, that would be lame.

If they'd have Yusuke Kozaki design the characters for a Final Fantasy, I might actually be able to take the characters seriously for the first time in a long while.

I just googled that name and came up with this:

Looking at this picture I can't help but wonder what you believe makes these characters any better than Nomura's -- it seems like this Kozaki has practically the same stylistic idiosyncrasies that Nomura does.

I don't really care if he's gay (although again I don't think that's what Nomura's referring to). It seems like when people think of someone being gay they automatically assume they're going to be this Hollywood stereotype of what gay people are.

I was mostly referring to his work on No More Heroes. I love his designs on that game.

What the fuck? Are you serious? I don't think it's "lame" for them to look feminine to begin with (and they really don't, unless you know some ugly-ass women), and I definitely wouldn't have a problem with a gay lead character. If you're honestly so shallow, then... :-\

I wasn't thinking about that (stereotype at all).

For example, i saw brokeback mountain, they were pretty regular guys, looked regular, and were gay. It was a great movie, obviously it's a bit awkward to see some scenes but i believe that's normal, and yeah.

But it was a movie, a movie that wasn't a show off, it actually told a really good story. Now in a game, specially a RPG, where i'm supposed to connect in some way to the main character, and immerse myself in the world, having the main character being gay would be a total turn off for me, and i wouldn't be able to put myself in the main character's shoes.

It's more in that regard. And i don't think i'm saying anything unreasonable, it wouldn't diminish the quality of the game, it would diminish my ability to immerse myself i think.

Zilch said:
So it's official, being gay = pretty lame.

Wrikawrek should just slowly back out of this thread now.

I'm saying it would be lame for me, to play as that character, because if i had the choice in a RPG i would never choose that character. That's what i'm saying for the reasons above.

If in Mass Effect, i could've chose to play a male gay character i wouldn't choose it, that's what i'm trying to say.

And i do believe it would be lame if you could only play as, because like it or not, that would impose a big barrier for many people. It's the same thing if the character was a little girl or something like that. It's more in that regard.

Why? Would you be totally turned off if you had to play as a female character like Lightning through an entire game? Aside from silent characters its hard to put yourself in any characters shoes because they already have a defined personality.

It'd be interesting just to see the general reaction if they did do a gay main character. If it's handled properly I don't think it'd be nearly as off putting to some as others think. It however would all depend on the execution. It could be a big disaster or show people that gamers aren't as narrow minded as some think.

hahah I dont think he was reffering to him being gay... Personally, I dont think they should go that route... I certainly have no problem with people being homosexual, but I agree that it would be more difficult to relate to on a personal level, especially in my fave series of games

maybe he has ADD...or schizophrenia

I absolutely hope he is not a chicken type character, as in neon genesis etc...

Although an Ussop like character might be amusing
