He's almost as good as The Streets.

I have no idea whether you mean this in a good or bad way. First Streets album is awesome. From there, well, not so much. Possibly, I'm guessing Australian hip-hop doesn't really go down so well with people OS.

No one else thinks Blu is too pretentious with his flow? I don't know how to put it otherwise, when I hear him rhyme I just want to give him a quick slap.

i can't call it. i mean, blu has a lot of positives. his voice is dope, he rocks over nice beats... but he could be rapping in italian for all i care, his words rarely hit me. (so(ul) amazing and the only way are incredible)

speaking of australian hip-hop, m-phazes is a beast behind the boards.

This has nothing to do with modern hip-hop but I've been listening to De La Souls 3ft. High and Rising album a lot lately. So awesome :D .

Drake's stuff is real, real smooth.

Wayne has a killer verse here, and Drake still 1ups him:

Yeah, I never heard of Drake til as of last month, so I listened to his two recent mixtapes, "So Far Gone" and "The Drought Is Over(?)". I found both to be average at best, Drake's lyrics don't grasp at me but I'm willing to give him time to see what he becomes(hopefully without Lil' Wayne as feature).

What the hell is up with GAF today?
Pre-E3 frustration. It's been like this all week.

Hip hop has been trying to meld with electronic music for awhile. So the future of hip hop is 90s electronica and acid.

not really feeling any of em (haven't checekd the drake or BOB tape yet). i do like

jay electronica

and jay electronica :(

not so new cats: elzhi, saigon, uni, and g-side

Yea, I'm more impressed with and interested in Jay Electronica than any of the hipster rap up and comers - some of whom are indeed pretty good; but when is he going to release anything dammit? I like Wale. Drake's hype totally baffles me. Dude is corny as hell.

Also Blu (of Blu & Exile fame) is absolutely amazing, and imo he's one of the top new rappers. It seems like he's not getting as much attention as many of his peers. I'm digging XV as well. Charles Hamilton...meh. He's another dude who seems to put image over artistry, at least to me.

The thing I like about this resurgence of "nerd" rap is that people are trying new things, even if they don't work. Wale's Mixtape About Nothing is a great example, plus of course it's good to hear folks putting effort into their lyrics

Wow, no one has mentioned the best hip hop album of the year thus far?
a3zjf9.jpg

That said, Blu is dope though this guest appearances and other work is a lot better than his album with exile IMO. Charles Hamilton is just LOL before his gf even punched him in the face. I'm amazed some of you actually try to take him seriously. B.o.B HAS been dropping great shit for awhile. Drake's pretty cool but idk if I'd file him strictly under hip hop.

Blackace said:

so what's so funny about this. or are you some kind of hiphop elitist who thinks he knows better than someone he has no real background knowledge of?

i laugh, at your laugh, thinking you know better.

uhh forgot about kid cudi, but I was mostly trying to compose a list of people that have not yet hit mainstream yet, and I define that by being heard on the radio all the time, Day and night has been on the radio non-stop. On my local stations I haven't heard any of these artists save for Drake.

but yet you mention drake, who is pretty much mainstream as it gets.

I love both wale and charles...but CUDI is the future.

I wish wale will get some mainstream success honestly, just cause he reps dmv. But sadly, I really don't see wale getting anywhere. Charles has a small chance only cause he's backed by iovine but that could still easily go the wrong way.

Drake is the future

Um...if he is the future, then I feel bad for it.

seriously though, drake is an alright emcee and pretty good singer, but his hype baffles me. He brings nothing new to the table except he is a more commercially viable version of mos def (aka childhood actor turned rapper) which again, is nothing new. content wise, lyrics wise, he is pretty good...but nothing fresh or new.

What's the consensus on Lupe Fiasco, is he liked in the Hip Hop community?

of course, but I don't think this thread would be about him. he is pretty much established as one of the top emcees to check for these days....shining down sounds amazing in fricken low quality...and the cool was one of the best hiphop albums in a long time

Co fucking signed. His lyrical range is amazing. Take a little Tupac, a little Nas, Mos Def, Q-Tip and Common, roll them into one and you've got Blu IMO. Below The Heavens is a classic LP and it's insane that Blu isn't getting half the recognition that all these new kats with their gimmicks and tired punch lines get. Insane.

Do you guys like to listen to hip-hop on top of the line headphones or at least above average ones? I've started reverting back the old school over the ear headphones for a lot of my music because I've been listening to more low-fi emcee's and bands lately.

Why are all of these guys so ... soft? When did hiphop lose its balls?
And what would make it "hardcore" for you? More talk about drugs, women, and killing?

Jesus Carbomb said:

Hip hop didn't lose its balls. GAF just loves all this soft shit. All these threads are filled with dudes blowing their loads over the safe artist du jour.

Rich Boy's album was pretty ho hum, but his last two mixtapes were excellent, and the few tracks that have leaked from his new shit sound great. But I dunno, I'm not waiting for the next big thing. I spend most of my time listening to all the awesome shit that's out there. I guess you're always looking for more if you're only into like two emcees that drop an album a year, but there's a fairly endless supply of awesome rap out there to listen to. You just have to expand your horizons beyond Kanye West & Wale.

Acid08 said:

Don't need to rap about that shit to be a hard emcee. El-P doesn't rap about that shit, and he's far from soft. Same with Roughneck Jihad. All these dudes come with this wussy rap-n-b sing-songy bullshit. It fucking sucks and it's played the fuck out.

only someone insecure with themself would be worried whether something was "soft" or "hard"

its about whats fresh

LOL It takes more balls to be yourself and be confident in being yourself then to conform to the expected stereotypes.

Just got it; pretty good although the second half is kinda eh. Best hip hop album I've heard this year.

Vox-Pop said:

He seems to be pretty popular, bridging the gap between mainstream rap fans and underground rap fans. And GAF likes him lol. I wish he'd find some better producers

Slaughterhouse...hmm. Good to hear they're working with good producers like Alchemist and DJ Khalil; initially I was concerned they'd be sticking to the weak producers their individual members use for solo albums (80s rock sample loops galore). But yea...they haven't released any official songs so we'll see

I agree with this and will have to check out this Jay Electronica guy.

There is a new stereotype and they're conforming, not being "fresh".

I know what I like and that's not it. Nor do I think it will be really successful. I have been looking at artist differently since I started DJing and all that, but even for my personal taste it doesn't do much for me.

it's all opinion and all that but I think you are giving too much credit.. so with that said

:lol

I now feel better about my erections.

This is the first time I've seen a picture of Drake, is he the black kid from Degrassi? If so then wow.. He's gonna be big though that "you da best" song is gonna own the summer.

What happened to Little Brother? They were suppose to be on the rise a few years ago. When 9th Wonder left the group was that the death blow?

Blu is amazing, love that dude's work.

I like Bishop Lamont as well, alot of you probably won't know him but he's cool..

Yeah pretty much. It sucks cause Little Brother is pretty dope..

I think there is supposed to be a "last album" with all 3 of them doing the whole thing... I haven't liked anything Phonte has done (or Pooh) for the last few years.

Shame really :(

He is signed to a small, unknown label called Aftermath...

I like G Malone.. He signed with Cashmoney of all labels, but I really like his flow. Kind of reminds of the Game's minus the cockriding and with a little more range..

So Far Gone.. average? I mean, the lyrics may not be the strongest, but Drake is amazing. So Far Gone is probably in the upper tier of recently released tapes imho

Not to really attack your friend personally, but I think the Streets sucks, is an abrasive insult to one's ears and an abomination to rhyme, rhythm, lyrical ability, and rhythm (yes rhythm is doubly offended by The Streets). So I'm saying your friend is almost at that level.
