Charles Hamilton? :lol

Are you fucking serious? He's like a broke ass Kanye or a lack-of-style Lupe. And rapping in monotone is fucking annoying.

What I hope will be the future of hip hop is not going to break into the mainstream anytime soon :(
Cudi's Album is coming out August 25th, Wale will be around the same time. Drake is out in December.

This year will be very good for hip hop.

Don't really like Cudi, while I'm not head over heals for Wale or Drake, I admit they're definitely a step in the direction I want Hip Hop to go.

Nerd hip hop is shit like Mc know-it-all or whatever that lame-O's name is. I know the white kids that used to hate hip hop want to separate their version of it from the rest by calling it nerdcore, but I think that's what I'd call "nerd hip hop".

MC Frontalot
MC Lars
ytcracker
Random (aka Mega Ran)
Kabuto the Python

is what i think of when i think "nerd hip hop", but then again i'm kind of in that whole "scene" and a lot of these dudes are friends of mine.

speaking of the future, im so happy that Lupe decided not to put out LUPend and retire. there should be at least 2-3 more albums until that happens. awesome. LASERS ftw

Thanks guys for posting about Blu. I never heard of him before.

Where do you guys listen to "below-the-radar" hiphop artist? I'm not talking about local amatuer artists. I'm talking about the hiphop (or neosoul) artist who have a legit record company but have no marketing behind them. Where do you guys discover them?

Over the past 5-6 years, I found most of my neo-soul music from Internet Radio. Specifically LiquidSoulElements on Live365.

I was going to ask the same question. Through GAF in recent months I've discovered Cudi, Wale, and Drake. GAF isn't exactly a bastion of hip-hop discussion, so I am wondering where you guys go for news and new stuff...?

Personally, I think Cudi, Drake and Wale are garbage, here's some much better shit. Without a doubt listen to Blu (in particular Blu & Exile and Johnson & Johnson):

Shad: The Old Prince Still Lives at Home (i fucking love this song, great beat. listen to how it develops. and the ending is fucking great)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH8SDiPPjoc

this one too, called Brother: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDQ49tLg5w0&feature=related

Blue Scholars,
my favorite one by them is definitely this, called opening salvo. i have no idea what that crazy ass violin sample is, but i love it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YONHpd_-0Ok
another called "Blue Metro": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz79goWQrYU

The Coup: Laugh, Love, Fuck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVksHCi7n7c

oh, and for god's sake. K-os. this is the best rap song i've heard all year. guy PRODUCES it all himself too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRlzM4a1ll0

bonus round: swedish rap.
Movits-fel del av garden. fucking great song.

I check out what sites like OkayPlayer and NahRight, which often post news or songs from indie/underground rappers as well as the mainstream stuff. Another great site for finding new and old hip hop:
http://whentheyreminisce.com/
(kinda cluttered but the the wealth of info is great)

Plus I have friends who listen to a lot more underground shit than I do, so if they're really excited about something I'll give it a try. Plus of course, GAF; that's how I learned about Blu & Exile's amazing album, plus Y Society's debut album

My favourite artists in up and comming hip hop right now The Cool Kids
cool_kids.jpg

Goddamn they're so good. I love the way they bring old school and new school together.

Can't really speak for the future of hip hop, but I find that most of the stuff I listen to is largely golden-age and electronic music-infused hip hop.

As far as my future of hip hop, that's still gotta be Madlib, Royce da 5'9" and Flying Lotus.

Is there a hip hop recommendation thread on Gaf? Eh if not I'd like to ask in this thread. I'm a fan of

Old school- A Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul, Masta Ace, YZ, NWA, solo Ice Cube
New- Black Milk, MF Doom, Quasimoto, The Roots, POS, and Aesop Rock

Based on that can anyone recommend me anything :P. I don't care if it's old or new, it just has to be quality.

Lupe?

He doesn't really fit in with the rest but he is the definition of quality of rap lately.
