The GAF Video and Filmmaking Thread

any good tutorials out there to mix dialogue to make it sound more film like?
im using the adobe suite, specifically audition cs6.
our recording setup was ntg-2>>preamp mixer>>h4n.
the audio already sounds good with zero "hissing" sound, but it sounds flat,
not like how a feature film audio dialogue would sound like.
we already have a guy doing the audio mixing with protools,
but it would be nice if i knew how to do it in adobe as well.

Anton, those podcasts are outstanding. I now listen to Filmspotting and Battleship Pretension on my railroad commute to and from school. Great stuff. I tried American Cinematographer but couldn't get over the inconsistent sound quality (some of the interviews sound terrible through my headphones because the interviewee is phoning or Skyping in their presence).

Gonna try Q&A now. Which of the two screenwriting podcasts (Scriptnotes and The Treatment) do you prefer? Why?

Yeah, Filmspotting is my fav, followed by Filmspotting. The hosts aren't afraid to disagree with each other and always have good insight, even when I don't agree.

I'd probably prefer Scriptnotes, simply because it works more with the actual craft and ins and outs of the business (topics range from how to write a good logline, character development, etc., to how to pitch, getting an agent, legal matters); The Treatment is more of a Q&A session, which can be interesting, but not always as "useful".

Yeah, I haven't listened to that one yet, but they're pretty entertaining. If you want to listen to a SUUUUUUPER awkward one, check out the episode with Bobcat Goldthwait/God Bless America.

Unrelated to podcasts: so I love my Windows Phone, but I also realize that there are a TON of useful video/photography/misc filmmaking apps available for iOS. Do y'all think it's worth investing in an iOS device to have access to these apps? Would an iPod touch be enough to take advantage of them?

I listened to the GBA one, and then I turned it off 20 minutes later because like the movie, he just repeats the same damn thing.

I guess not. He just kept bringing it back to that horse movie

The host or Bobcat? It gets super awkward because Bobcat kinda goes into a fit after so many questions about the horse movie, that that's all he talks about. Not particularly entertaining or anything, just really weird.

Anyone getting the 4K cam?

Not that I'm going to get it (still aiming for 2.5K), but I really want to see comparisons between the 4K and 2.5K for: low light, DoF, resolution (duh, but mainly how good it looks when downsampled), compressed RAW vs uncompressed RAW, and of course, dynamic range.

batteries too.
that's the biggest hindrance for me right now.
v1 had a battery life in real world situations to about an hour.
will the 4k version be the same?
any news on that matter?

i dunno if there is just some simple settings i can tell you. its mostly done by ear. try messing with reverb etc

Holy shit! Magic Lantern for my t2i has saved my life several times, but if they can do 24fps 14-bit RAW on a 5d, that is absolutely insane!

Guys I need some quick advice on external microphones for DSLRs! I want a good but cheap external mic for my Canon t3i for interviews and voice-overs and whatnot. Problem is that I have no knowledge on these kinds of products and I need to have one by Sunday. Can anyone recommend me some microphones or at least give me some brands and specs I should look for? My budget is only around 150ish euros.

Edit: Friend of mine recommended me a Rode VideoMic not sure how good this is?

I want to start shooting narratives and shorts. I've usually just shot video on my DSLR and added music into it.

If I were starting out with lighting set ups and audio recording...where should I start?

I have a Rodemic but it doesn't seem to work as well.

Rode mic is what is most often recommended around that price range, I have one that I use on my t2i. It's decent enough, but it also depends a bit on the camera. Does t3i have sound control options? My t2i doesn't have it so I had to install Magic lantern to be able to control levels and remove automatic gain control. To be honest though, I would rather recommend that you buy an external recorder like a Zoom H4N. It give a much better sound and gives you many more options.

get a preamplifier/mixer before it goes to your field recorde or camera.
i use a juicedlink preamp and it works wonders to remove that hissing sound and boost the signal.

here's an example of various mixers combinations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKVeBqhXMvM

its the juicedlink maker that did the test.
is it biased? i dont know. but as for me and our production team, we dont recorder audio without some kind of mixer/preamp. and of course a lot easier to sweeten audio in post.

more good news on the Magic Lantern Raw discovery on 5d.

Two weeks ago we announced RAW silent pics. Today I am pleased to tell you that we should be able to get 12-bit RAW video 1920x1080 at 24fps working with 1000x-CF-cards on the 5D Mark III.. in theory! Stay tuned for more info and you can be looking forward to the next release!

1920x1080 RAW video now requires 83MB/s at 24fps, so it should work just fine on 1000x cards.
wow, and if by reading some of the comments on the magic lantern forum, they managed to shoot continuously until the cf card was full.
its really happening. 12-bit raw on a DSLR. o_0

im going to donate a kidney if they can pull this off in a stable build.

Thanks for the advice on the Rodemic guys. I'm now the proud owner of one. :)

Anyway, I decided this Sunday to walk around town with a friend and brought my camera along. I made this very short video of the beautiful stuff that crossed our paths. Thought you guys might be interested.
Sunny Sunday.

This summer the idea is to travel through Europe with a friend and our DSLR's and shoot video and photographs, so this Sunday's video ended up being very good practice. I also came to the realisation I really need ND-filters for my lenses, something I never thought about. I think I might be missing some other vital equipment to bring when road-tripping. So my question to you guys, what equipment would you bring on a road trip and what would you consider vital?

Anyone have much electrical experience? I am checking eBay for used colortran lights, but they obviously don't use your standard power outlet. Stuff like this:

lCucL1a.jpg

How/where can I learn about what I need to do to get these things powered, safely?

Is anybody working on any projects this summer? I've got a few things I want to write before I head back to school in the fall and I'm tackling an adaptation for my first feature-length script. Otherwise, I'll mostly be working on writing shorts I've conceptualized and possibly helping on friends' shoots.

Hopefully, I will be! Going to make my first major camera purchase (was dead set on BMCC, but now want to see how the 5D RAW hack pans out) and shoot a feature length comedy with it.

I might have some shorts I'm working on, too. Other than that, I'm writing two shorts, one of which I hope to shoot in the fall and/or next spring in my homeland (Virginia!).

Oh boy, here goes nothing.

I submit to the mercy of GAF my current production reel.

I would like to hear any comments or constructive criticism. I am finishing a short web documentary right now, and have some great footage to add, so I figured I should update my reel again before that so this is the current version.

That way I can prepare to make more/new changes for the new content in a few weeks.

I shot a short last night...haven't shot anything for me in awhile, it was great. Have to do some pick ups, ran out of daylight..but it looks solid.

Here's some pics from BTS...

"Ghetto Dolly" :D

I've got a few other things, I'll post in a few...

Good day, sir.

Going to give you my point by point breakdown...hold on to you butts.

- Lose the IMPACT font. EWWWW.
- Writing/Direction/Post Production...it's not centered right
- I'd drop writing, a reel isn't going to show that
- This is way too long. Reels shouldn't be longer than 2 minutes. Your reel should just be a quick taste for someone to see your work, get them excited so they want to look into your work further. This shows too much, I don't need to know what project it is, nor do I need to waste time looking at a title setting up what the project is.
- We don't see the first footage until 13 seconds in. Get it to 5 seconds, we're there to see your work. We know your role there, this is your work. Your name, then BAM, straight to your work.
- Nooooo, this format is not good. It's long and boring. I don't want to see an entire fashion commercial. I want to see a clip or two from it and move on.
- 90 seconds from "Predictable"? I didn't predict that (see what I did there?). Pick 3-4 shots from it that you like the best, and put them in.
- Yeah, this just needs to be quick stuff showing off a sample. Pick a hot song and cut the song down to 90-120 seconds and cut a fast paced montage of your best work to highlight what you can do. Showing off too much of a project will only wear down the viewer and make them want to turn it off. If I want to check out your short, I'll do that, after I watch a highlight reel of your work.

Yeah, I think that's all I really need to say. Rethink the format of it because it should be flashy and sexy.

Here's my reel...it's old (September), but it shows off some work, and then it stops playing...the end sucks, but whatever. If people make it that far, they will forgive the lack of a 'punch' to the ending (the remix just fades out...bleh).

Hey, so I'm messing around with Adobe Premiere and I'm looking for some footage to toy around with as I continue to teach myself the program. Would anybody be willing to send me some stock footage or extras you have? I will never attempt to take credit for any of it and I will not post the completed cuts and samples on the web. Just looking for some good footage to toy with.

THANKS!

Seriously, pretty much the same stuff Ive heard form other people plus a few good new tips. I plan on getting it down to 2-3 mins, including the three new projects I am adding too it. I guess no more than maybe 15-20 seconds a project will be the plan.

I really appreciate it, I knew it was rough when I put it up, but my old OLD reel was really bad so I wanted a rough one until my newer projects were done so i could figure out what i was doing wrong when I made my next version with the new footage.

So that was very helpful. I should have my last project done in about two weeks and my new reel done then too. Hopefully you'll have new helpful critiques, as I will have corrected those.

Who can recommend me some good filmmaking youtube channels, podcasts, sites and whatever? I'm currently subscribed to Indy Mogul and Film Riot on Youtube and they are very entertaining and I feel like I've learned somethnig new with every video. I'm wondering if there is more stuff like that out there, stuff like Videocopilot that is based on editing is fine too!

First music video coming tonight!! So excited to finally get this thing out there. Beyond pumped. Here's where I'd just mash on the keyboard and hit enter, but I'll be professional.

Balllleeer. Looove that text for serious.

Damn, RED cameras are beautiful.

If you guys can give me 20 seconds of your time, here's a little something.

http://youtu.be/i2XMl5jRch4

That's the teaser for my next short film, about love, Disney movies and Street Fighter 3.

Hopefully you guys like it! I'll go back to editing the thing now -_____-U

Yes, reds are. They really are.

Are there any good iPhone apps for location scouting? I want to be able to mark where I was on Maps or something so I can easily get back to the exact location I scouted. This is for a landscape/nature porn project.

I want to shoot slow motion....what's a camera that I could rent that would be able to get a shot of a paintball moving through the air?

Possibly the FS700 (Sony). It can go up to 960fps in a burst mode. But for a paintball that's all you need.

If not that, then Phantom's or something similar would be what you need.

This is pretty expensive to rent haha

What's the mount? Canon? I've never used Sony cameras so I don't know how they work with lenses.

The Sony has a Sony mount, but you can get a Metabones adapter or otherwise to mount Canon on there.

Phantom is very expensive...FS700 should be pretty cheap.

I was going to learn Motion but have started digging into After Effects.

I've watched a handful of tutorials for the past couple of nights but does anyone have any good resources/any suggestions?

I'm planning on working on a motion typography video to get my feet wet.
