The games that really brought an experience this gen

Only good answer :

Metal Gear Solid 4 - is the most extravagent experience this gen and is still to be topped. The money spent on the production, the attention to detail, unlockables, scale and design in all areas blows away any other game I have ever played.

These games :

Alan Wake
Gears of War
Limbo
Portal
Uncharted 2
Flower
Heavy Rain
Red Dead Redemption

Also are standouts this gen for me.

along with Mirror's Age which really delivered an experience that we could not be able to see on the DC/PS2/GC/Xbox gen.
:p

In any case, the one I was going to say were already mentioned:
Assassin's Creed II
Uncharted 2
Heavy Rain
Portal 2
Halo Reach
Super Mario Galaxy
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Ouendan/EBA is the game that defined, for me, the early DS life for me. The cult following they had also helped.

Japan Time was a great experience this gen. While blog updates are not new, this was the first time daily updates became really engaging. For a company that everyone considers bad at online it's funny they have used it the best to get really buzz for their game. Maybe it worked to well since expectation sky rocketed.

In some ways while they could have been done of previous technology, Wario Land, A Boy and his Blob, Muramasa etc making 2D acceptable for retail release on consoles again.

Oh and this thread needs more CONDEMNED!

Seriously shit my pants playing that game with surround sound and the lights turned off. I think it's the emphasis on the CQC combat that elevates it above other games in the genre.

This game mechanic felt new, and familiar at the same time. Nothing mindblowingly progressive, but a nice twist on an old style. It still beats all the imitators with the subtlety, and finesse of the design.

My personal 'experiences' belong to these games:

Fallout 3
GTAIV + Episodes from Liberty City
Read Dead Redemption
Battlefield Bad Company 2 Multi
Dead Space
Demons Souls

For me nothing comes close to the original Super Mario Galaxy. Amazing how Nintendo upgraded the 3D platforming formula to something fresh and new. I remember being impressed by a bunch of early Xbox 360 titles too like Call of Duty 2 and PGR3 because they looked great and played awesome. And between playing older MGS games and the hype I must admit that the first playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4 I did with one of my friends was a great experience too. Call of Duty 4 is also part of the 'holy shit' moments this gen for me. Still the greatest COD in a modern setting it's just so well paced and fun on many levels.

Overall plenty of games had their moments, from Sonic Colours to Mirror's Edge and GTAIV but there just weren't that many games that I kept playing for years after launch like Smash Bros. Melee./Half Life 2/F-Zero GX etc.

Heavy Rain. It doesn't matter if you hated or loved the game, it sure was a unique experience.

Demon's Souls. Has the most refreshing multiplayer component this gen. Perfect for the game's mood and gameplay design.

Portal 1 and 2. The puzzle element alone makes this one of the best new experiences this gen. But add some awesome characters and a fun narrative and you've got one helluva package.

Bioshock. Probably one of the first games this gen that actually blew me away.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Good platformers are a rarity these days, especially on the PS3 and 360. So playing both SMG titles in a time of drought, which coincidentally are the best platformers in the history of gaming, sure is an experience.

Deadly Premonition. It made people try things only an insane person would. An unusually fun experience.

Braid. One of the main reasons I adore indy titles today. It looked, sounded, played and felt great.

Uncharted 2 - The best gaming experience this gen has to offer IMO.

Modnation Racers, LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2 - Definitley something that couldnt have been offered during previous gens.

So basically PS3 wins, and hopefully I'll have a couple of great experiences to add to this list when I finally play Demon's Souls and when LA Noire turns up.

I was never into the "get the high score" based games until experiencing games like these. And that's probably because of, especially in Geometry War 2's case, the integration with the online leader boards. I never got to experience that in the arcades and it'd obviously never been done on consoles before this gen.

I'd also throw in Trials HD for the ghost friend tracking at the top of the screen. Super Meat Boy too for its precision controls which might be some of the most accurate I've ever experienced.

MGS4 is still king of that, the pure next gen experience

My man! Nailed it right too

Uncharted 2 and Condemned. That's really it for me, sadly. Not that there haven't been some other good games but these 2 stand out for me.

Many open world games couldn't be done last gen. While some (GTA4, Mercs 2) were merely extensions of last gen games, the following did something new:
-Assassin's Creed - vertical and horizontal platforming with very dense crowds and environments
-Red Faction Guerrilla - happy destruction
Especially Assassin's Creed feels like such an achievement.

Halo 3 and Reach were a huge leap from last-gen Halos thanks to new features:
-sophisticated and player adjustable AI (with skulls - Halo 2 had, but not quite the same)
-full mission/matches recording
-Forge

LittleBigPlanet seems to be another such concept. And while we're at it, Trials HD - great graphics, physics engine, user created levels and glorious 60fps

I think I should list GTAIV. When it came out, it actually felt like something amazing and beyond last generation. The scale and look of past GTA's always had to be left to the imagination. Not so with IV. The world is amazingly well done. So much detail, that no other game this gen has gotten close to it. For that it will always be remembered.

Also Oblivion was a pretty amazing time, but it had been done before. Still it brought a world, that while repetitive was pretty big and felt like it had a lot to explore. Which is what I spent a lot of hours doing. Few games have had the sense of exploration like Oblivion has.

Halo 3 - Co-op and multi on a new level

Red Dead Redemption - Open world on a scale never before seen (combined with co-op)

Uncharted 2 - Cinematic masterpiece along with fantastic and dynamic dialogue.

Heavy Rain (same as uncharted 2)

Gears 2 (epic co-op), Mass Effect (next gen RPG with incredible story), Alan Wake (immersion).

What did MGS4 bring that MGS3 didn't do better.

It was the first game that screamed "next gen" to me. Particularly where cutscenes and gameplay were combined together simultaneously. Was really shocking to see that the first time.

Incidentally I don't think MGS4 is the best in the series, I think 2 and 3 are.

All of my top games have been listed already. I think quite a few of the ones listed - barring graphical advancements - could have, and in some cases were represented/achieved last gen. Such as open world games.

Stuff that couldn't have been done last gen and is essential to the the design of the game, probably:

Dead Rising - you won't get far with only a handful of zombies.
Warhawk/Battlefield - Multiplayer simultaneous ground, air, sea combat on large maps.
Mario Galaxy (debatable) - Wiimote.

To name a few.

- Deadly Premonition
- GRID
- No More Heroes
- No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
- Operation Darkness
- Outland
- Shadow Complex
- Splinter Cell: Conviction
- Super Meat Boy
- Super Street Fighter IV

Halo 3 -3D replays, image captures, and Forge, they set a standard. I still laugh at old replays from fights with my friends.

MGS4
Warhawk
Heavy Rain
Heavenly Sword
LBP
Uncharted 1 & 2

All brilliant experiences and in my top 10 games of all time.

Deadly Premonition for reminding me that games can be goofy, serious, terrible, and extremely enjoyable in the same package. Please, Swery+Suda teamup in the future.

Heavy Rain for the rather intense moments that occurred in it and being fairly unique in the gaming landscape in its presentation and gameplay.

999/Hotel Dusk for the settings, writing, interesting use of hardware, and characters.

Little Big Planet for getting me and three friends to play a game together on the same screen for the first time in years. Not to mention most of the time spent laughing at each other dying and sabotaging one another, hahahaha!

Steam for introducing and hooking me into online multiplayer with titles such as tf2 and l4d. Not to mention experiencing pc gaming again for the first time in years.

The defining experience of this generation? Easy!

Christmas day, with the family, Wii Sports. Everyone playing, everyone having fun with it for hours on end. THAT is the defining experience of the generation to me. Everything else comes second.

For me, it has to be:

Uncharted 2: It brings cinematic gameplay to a whole new level. The whole experience is so goddamn smooth and perfect, from the amazing controls, to the fun story, and the transitions in between. It also really blurred the line between what would normally be delegated to a cut-scene, and what you actually got to play with some of its amazing set pieces. Truly the best experience and my favorite game this gen.

Red Dead Redemption: Ever since I was 10 years old I've wanted this game. An open world cowboy game full of ambiance and atmosphere that just sucks you into the world and makes you not want to leave.

Metal Gear Solid 4: The concept of "stealth in the middle of a battlefield" was executed perfectly in this game (well, the first couple acts at least). The amount of details, ways to approach levels, and epic set pieces make this one hell of an experience for me.
Some standout moments I remember are tracking Naomi through the woods after the Laughing Octopus battle, realizing on my second play through that the robots in the trench coat actually follow you through the whole level of Act 3, the crying wolf sniper battle at Shadow Moses, Metal Gear Rex vs Ray, and, of course, microwave of death.

LBP: Awesome concept, awesome execution. I've spent soooo many hours playing this game with friends and discovering awesome levels, and it never fails to put a smile on your face.

Just an overall experince?

I would say Silent Hill Shattered Memories.

A Next Gen experince?

This one is a bit harder.

Alot of what made most of the great games this gen where extensions of game types of last gen in my opinion.

However if I had to choose. Condemed Criminal Origins. Thing was crazy, took hoor to a whole new level, the Melee was so distrubing I swear I felt my teeth rattle plus it did everything in First Person which I generally hate but still I couldn't be swept up by it.

Certainly not my favorite game this gen, but probably the most memorable experince.

Red Faction Guerrilla: Good god the destruction was great. The multiplayer also was unique, with building destruction modes and crazy backpacks to facilitate destruction. Dudes with jetpacks raining down electric death, invisible dudes stealth hammering you in the back, dudes ramming through walls/ceilings/floors, colossal towers collapsing around and on you, all in the harsh Martian landscape.

It is a very specific mood and feeling I get when I think about this game, made possible by the destruction engine and creative gameplay. It probably also helps that I was reading KSR's Mars trilogy at the time, so I was way into the setting.
