Quick Look: Scrap Metal

Never heard of this game, but from the makers of N+ has me interested.

Scrap Metal is the game David Jaffe was huffing and puffing about last week about how Sony should sue Microsoft because it was, in his opinion, a little too close to Twisted Metal's concept.

I haven't seen the QL yet but the little bit of video I looked up earlier today, I'd say Blizzard has a better case (with Rock N' Roll Racing).

You shut your mouth!

It took me so long to beat that effing game.

Poor Brad would explode!

Yes I had the little pink bowtie, shut up

That was a misquote. He was pissed it was so close to the name of Twisted Metal, which Sony owns the property to, not the concept. Hell, he's talked about how much he loves games that build off his concepts like Dante's Inferno.

On QL: Love the Robocop reference there :lol

I can only imagine it must be several times more frustrating when you are sat right next to brad watching unable to intervene or look away.

Sometimes I wonder whether someone who's that .. bad .. at video games can realistically be qualified to review them for others ..

then I say fuck it and load up the next quick look.

Interesting perspective. Is there anyone else reading this thread who feels similar to this guy? Or, by chance, anyone who feels opposed?

You try holding a conversation for a recording while also playing a game well. IT AIN'T EASY.

Brad may be bad at videogames, but he is a nervous person by nature it seems. And then add on top of that the pressure of a Quick Look, I think that's what causes the performance to dwindle.

I mean Brad has played Dead Space on hard difficulties, etc. So I mean he knows what he's doing, just on video is not his best performance.

A lot of us wouldn't do well in front of others either.

That's what I think is Brad's problem. I can't concentrate on a game when people are talking to me or I'm talking to them (unless it's online multiplayer). When I play I have all concentration go straight to the game I'm playing.

Most of the aspects that would get considered in a video game review don't necessarily require someone to be good at the game to judge, so no. I'm not going to read a SCII review and expect to get the opinion of someone playing the game on a competitive level. Besides, I'd imagine Brad is better than the average gamer anyhow, and most sites review for the masses. Someone already mentioned that Brad is the only person in the GB crew with a degree in English, that alone combined with his passion for games warrants him being there.

Besides, if I want to find the view of someone who's skilled at a game there's plenty of places I can go to get it... (ie. if I want the opinion of a competitive SC player I'll go to gosugamers, or teamliquid...)

This is something which gets said here a lot. So to this know-it-all and everyone else out there who complains about it, why don't you just find some proof out there to illustrate your point. I mean Brad does have hundred of reviews out there and they aren't hiding behind anonymity. If you think his skill at playing games is such a hindrance, why don't you find an example of it manifesting in some traceable form instead of speculating on an inference you have made with no concrete proof.

And of course you won't, because you cant.

A lot of people express that opinion. It never gets any less stupid to hear. Discussing a game's positive and negative qualities, comparing it to other games in its genre and in the past, and expressing your opinion in a clear concise manner are important to reviewing videogames.

He finishes the games he reviews, what the hell matters beyond that? Also, protip: Most people playing games also are "bad" at games. If they weren't, normal modes wouldn't be so easy in games these days.

I mock Brad's performance sometimes because it's fun, but I'd never question his qualifications as a reviewer or journalist based on Quick Looks. And being bad usually has very little to do with why Brad dies in games anyway. It's usually indecisiveness and running around while discussing the game or showing off certain aspects (see the most recent RE5 video or the Dante's Inferno QL for obvious examples). Somehow I doubt that when he's not on camera he's doing the same things. Hell, sometimes he even seems to be getting worse so it's probably our fault :lol

edit: Nothing above was necessarily directed at any individual person, even if I seemed to imply otherwise with some of my word choice. I could edit it, but eff that. I'm too good at games to bother writing well.

Apparently I laid the sarcasm on too thick, I was kidding. If you guys want to have this debate, go back 2 pages. Then another 15 pages. Then another 20 pages. Then another 30 pages. Then another 17 pages. Also it doesn't really matter what you guys think since Brad is awesome.

"Aaaaah... okay, I've hit the Y button to reset... the, yeah... okay, I guess I have... okay..."

In this case, I think Brad failed quite a lot to play the game and to keep a conversation. I love the quick looks overall, but the first half of the Scrap Metal quick look was just embarrassing. He should have practiced more before recording. Waiting until release so they could show off the online multiplayer would have been good too.

Having played the demo several times, it was frustrating for me when they started talking about how they should keep an eye out for any aircraft that might be in the demo, right as they passed about 50 feet away from where the only airplane in the demo was located. :lol

And it's too bad they didn't get time to play the faction mission, which is really awesome.

It's too bad they never grappled onto one of those flying gas canisters. That's my favorite thing to do in the demo, grapple onto one, shoot it, and watch it carry me up to the sky.

yep, i was looking forward to that :(

This is one of those cases where I was kind of yelling at the screen for them to look just a little bit in one direction because they were missing all kinds of cool stuff. The grenade launcher in the tower above the propaganda truck, for instance. It's a bummer that they just kind of decided to go around in circles for over half of the Quicklook.

Off-topic of quicklooks, but ever since they changed the video player, I can't get videos to run at Giant Bomb in Firefox (latest update) and Vista. Any advice?

Disable abblock? Mine runs just fine (xp + firefox, mac + firefox)

Do you have adblock or noscript running? You'll have to add exceptions for giantbomb.com.

Man I really like the UI. Lap and Position right under your car, no need to cover up corners of the screen with information. No map either, but you can gauge how quickly you can move up in position by the brief updates that tell you how many meters behind you are. Pretty slick.

Looks like during the races the cars cast a soft, generic shadow. That's fine by me, but it was weird when he got first place near the end of the video, the camera followed his car a little bit and the car cast no shadow at all. Wonder if that's something they'll work on. Regardless it looks pretty fun to play.

Very Burnout + Deathrace. Guess they sent up the guys to see them while they were flown over for Blur, very cheeky.
Pretty sure this was filmed in a hotel room during GDC.

I can't wait for this game to come out.

Split/Second looks like a ton of fun.
I got a massive Burnout vibe, not only from the way the game looks but also they way the cars seem to handle.

The game still needs polish but it's looking great.
