So after the Quick Look and playing the demo I think I'm gonna buy Mount and Blade next time it goes on sale... I don't know how to feel about this.
Get Mount and Blade Warband. The original does not have the improved single player and multiplayer.
Mount and Blade is very indie. The graphics are down right ugly. The UI is horrible. Many GAF members would be able to outdo them in Paint. I am not kidding. It might be the ugliest Interface I have ever seen in a computer game.
.... BUT...
1) There is no game like this. Operation Flashpoint ala Medieval is actually a good description. A sword'n Broad simulator. The only real fighting game you can get. The combat is physics based, utilises the full benefit of Mouse + Keyboard. I don't think this scheme could be translated to a controller with Analog sticks to the same effect. The closest similarity I can come with is that it reminds of Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight II: Outcast and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy series, where you would move around using WASD and aim your sword in a completely horizontel/vertical 360 free form rotation. Basically you can move your body in any combination, while using your upper body to slash, spin, hack, stab, twirl, block, parry, dodge, throw in any combination. Depending on the speed and momentum you have, moving in any direction, you will hit at different speeds, strengths and the same goes for blocking or avoiding attacks.
Even shooting bow and arrows are hard in this game. It will take months to become efficent at horseback archery. Just like that it's almost impossible in real life, unless you are a HUN.
2) It can not be stated how hard this game is. People compare it to Demons Soul(havent played it myself) but it's a game where you cant bunny jump or killstreak your way out of danger. If it's two against 1, you have to be really, really good. You can't twirl around in 0.5 seconds and kill two guys. timing and is absolutely key. striking an enemy to soon, will leave you exposed on your back.
This games takes patience to become good at. If you are a LOL MW2 kid, bragging about kills on Youtube, you might find this game impossible unforgiving.
3) Because the graphics are sort of poor and because it's so indie, it has a great community. It's not just the mod community, but also the entire in-game community. It's like its surrounded by all the misfits of PC gaming. I haven't seen the Halo crowd, the COD crowd or something like that in Warband. At least not yet, as the game is becoming more and more popular. Tons of servers.
Yes, I wanna recommend this game so much. I hope it will have a stable online life for many years, because there is nothing like it, and it's just so mad fun in my opinion. I love online FPS, but this is such a breathe of fresh air. I have been dreaming about this sort of online game, since I played Ocarina of Time, thinking about how cool a online sword game would be.
