The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

Pokemon is, inherently, not a fun game to watch someone else play. Because there's pretty much no story and the game is all grinding, there's not much enjoyment to be had watching it, but it's a lot of fun to actually play. At least, that's my opinion on it.

Agree. The quick look wasn't fun too watch, but playing the game is a different story.

You fuckers will never be true pokemon masters.

your attitudes make your pokemons feel miserable. no wonder you cant have fun. These games are made for the people who want to be the very best, where no one ever was. its clear you guys dont have that in you.

I haven't played Pokemon since the original Gold, I'm still planning on getting it. That video was pretty boring, but is watching someone else play Pokemon ever fun?

The first time I saw someone play it in 1998 it was. Now? Hell no.

I tried playing Pokemon when it was on the GBA. Forget what version. I think it was Red or something. Just never did anything for me, but I had to at least check it out once. Guess it's just not for me.

For reference, I played Red to death. Yes, I caught them all. I was a Pokemaniac with tons of merchandise and Pokemon Stadium and whatnot.

Then I bought Gold and was like OMGOMGOMG. I think I caught like, 220-230 or so. But I still loved it. Eventually I turned 12 or 13 or whatever and stopped playing. The next time I even played a Pokemon game was Diamond at a demo kiosk at a GameStop. After like one battle and walking around a town for about 30 seconds, I realized that the framerate was funky and how fucking slow it was and dropped all interest in possibly playing it for real (rather than my 10yo strategy of "use rare candies and then spam hyper beam").

Still, on a whim I decided to try out Emerald one time. Without even really intending to play, I ended up getting like three or four badges before I moved on. I... I couldn't help it. Like... even though that slow sloooow grind at the beginning of all Pokemon games was so terrible, at some point I was having fun and kept playing without even understanding WHY I kept playing.

well not everyone can be cool and handsome and good at video games man

maybe you can go back to barbies horse adventure or a ball with a cup or final fantasy xiii and leave the adult games to people who aren't babbys
I like RPGs. Pokemon has a great concept, for sure, and it's definitely not for babies. But as far as RPGs go, Pokemon is really not a good one, come on. Drinky Crow's thread on the matter (I think it's called Pokemon: really not fun) hits on all the valid points.

I caught all the Pokemon in blue. But the core RPG system is seriously bloated now. It needs a serious rethink.

I mean a core of Pokemon strategy is swapping out a magickarp every battle to evolve him to a gyrados for an early game strong pokemon. This is like literally a half minute waste every battle. It has real problems, and I don't say this as "pokemon is mega lamz0rs and for babby"

it's more or less the same game it was in the first iteration. Just because you got a paint job(new pokemon) doesn't make a old car in terms of performance good outside of nostalgia.

Watching someone play a game is one thing(I agree-as for the most part it's boring.) Watching the game being played with the same annoyances that I had with the game that came out over 10 years ago-no thanks.

in before pokemon defense force saying that there's no problems with the game

Proves youre not a pokemon master

True pros beat the game with just a non evolved magikarp - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kAbZRaNZQk

I love Pokémon, but the games are pretty simple, and though it works fantastic at that level, to have essentially the same game coming out 10+ years later is very disappointing for such a potentially amazing property.

Pokemon is indeed fun, I really just wished they increased the speed of the experience and not have things as they were 5 years ago.

They did. The Pokemon games added running a long time ago and you've been able to turn off the battle animations since the beginning. You can also turn off the message asking you if you want to switch your Pokemon when the opponent's Pokemon faints.

As a pokewhore, I can't necessarily disagree with this. Most of Pokemon's changes has been evolutionary stuff (ie abilities, double battles, etc.) without any major changes to the core mechanics. If someone didn't like Red/Blue or played it and wasn't super enthusiastic about it the later games in the series aren't going to make you a believer.

What about somebody who played and enjoyed Red/Blue but is really annoyed at the fact that little to nothing has changed in more recent games? Most Pokemon games are just deeper versions of the same content. :(

I've avoided the Pokemon craze until today. While that Quick Look didn't make it look very appealing, it's something I've always wanted to try and the pedometer looks like a nice hook. Heart Gold is in my possession, I just need my DSi XL to come in to play it.

Pokemon's problems aren't the core mechanics, they're super simplistic and sluggish as all hell and the games aren't very challenging but none of that is the problem really making it rough to play.

The problem is what an awful void of nothing the entire scenario is. There's so very many things they could do to make it an interesting adventure, but they dont even lift a finger to try.

The original Dragon Quest, we're talking the 1986 one, the godfather of the Japanese RPG, has arguably better dungeon and scenario design than the last Pokemon I played, Pearl I think. If the scenario was fun and amusing, it might hold my interest in spite of the skeleton systems, but sadly it never really made any leap.

But then again would you risk botching up your cash cow?

I think if you grew up with it and like the little universe and designs they got going, you might keep playing it, if you need more than that, you probably wont. Pokemon games are pretty child centric bus stop trade/collect titles, and I doubt they'll ever feel the need to change that. It's not like the world will suddenly stop producing kids who like to collect shit.

I certainly wore out my Blue cartridge when I was younger.

because you don't have a clue about games like this. I guess Monsterb Hunter isn't your stuff either.

I am actually kind of interested in MLB 2k10 even though I don't know shit about baseball. I guess the problem with sports games is that by the time 2k10 gets cheap, 2k11 will be coming and have awesome features. :lol

Pokemon is a game about collecting and trading "monsters". It's the equivalent of an electronic trading card game. It's a social experience, a bunch of kids at school would bring their gameboys and show off/trade their Pokemon with each other. I haven't played Pokemon in years (not since I was 12 or so) but not because I think it's a baby game but because the series is completely stagnant and I doubt any other 24 year old guys would play it with me. I absolutely can't imagine sitting by myself and playing Pokemon, never talking about it with anyone, never trading with anyone, just sitting alone in your room playing Pokemon would probably be the most boring, depressing, and pointless thing ever.

It would be almost like playing a game like WoW or Diablo by yourself, you collect all this cool gear, make your character powerful and strong, but without other people to see it or talk about it with... to see your awesome looking armor or how efficient you are at killing enemies - it loses almost all of its appeal. (Those games do have at least some iota of interesting combat/story though so they're not a total bust all alone like Pokemon)

That's why it makes a good portable game and why it's popular among children (beyond the cartoons and toys enforcing that). That's also why I imagine the complexity has remained so low and stagnant, they want to keep the game focused more on the collection and trading aspects than they do on the fighting dynamics.

Letter said it was a guy who worked there and bought it from the Kraft store, still pretty cool though.
