The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

There was a certain ignorance towards the series and the game mechanics that bothered me, too. I mean obviously neither of them played one of the first two games, so they are forgiven; but "You are drawing your own map. Oh, this is so weird!" kinda bugged when this is one of the landmark features since the first game. But that's just how Quick Looks are.
And I actually like Kessler, but I don't want him to be the JRPG guy. I would rather not have anyone of the GB crew do JRPGs actually (except for Endurance Runs!).

Bah, I wanted a better Quick Look of this game : < I really wish Matt could have done this one with Vinny. He's usually the one that can show some sort of interest in games like these (even if he doesn't play them) and probably would have made it a more enjoyable watch : S

The only problem I have with these JRPG Quick Looks recently is how they all need to do that prerequisite, "Oh this is a JRPG and those games have cliches in them!" jokes every time.

Yes, spiky hair, big swords, magic powers, and destiny. We get it.

Why?

Kessler seems to be their JRPG guy now, but both Jeff and Ryan seemed low energy though.

That's probably because they both hate JRPGs and didn't think through their "Throw these games at the intern" plan completely. I'm sure it was great fun until Brad spoke up and said he'd be preoccupied with Starcraft 2 for the next 500 consecutive hours and mentioned they'd have to co-pilot the quick looks.

Vinny and Kessler QL:

"You can press THIS BUTTON, and wham, you have just given. A +1 stat. To your mage."

"OH GOSH."

"And now, since this is a JAPANESE ROLE PLAYING GAME, OR JRPG, I will FIGHT a BIG monster BOSS (as is this genre's WONT to DO)."

"Oh don't do that oh gosh oh nooooooo."

repeat for 20 minutes of enthusigasm

You know what? I'll take it. I'm not expecting good coverage of JRPG:s at Giant Bomb (really not expecting good RPG coverage at all there) but I'd rather have "enthusigasm" then what was served in this quick look :'<

Just stop letting Ryan talk about games with complexity, please. He is awesome at shitty movie talk, atrocious at discussing anything but a shooter.

Give him a break, Etrian Odyssey is a incredibly slow paced, niche title that appeals to a tiny handful of people and is not conducive to the quick look format. Not many people find DQ1-style JRPG combat and "mapping" very fun at all and more of a boring chore.

I don't get the QL hate for that game. I mean what else could they possibly do? Game showed mapping feature, battle, and sailing, all in a pretty short period of time. People who had no clue what the series is about (like me) now know and can use that information to buy or pass when it drops.

True, but I think people are more so complaining about the choice of Ryan for the Quick Look. I'm sure someone else in the office would have been more enthused about it. Even Jeff seemed somewhat positive about Ark Rise Fantasia, which honestly looks a lot worse than Etrian Odyssey.

Sure, but some people would go in with an open mind. Ryan knows if he will love or hate something based on the title.

LTTP : Arc Rise Fanasia QL.

Sorry Kessler but i'm not feeling you :(

anyway, and that game has really bad voice acting.

I love how people say Kessler is trying to hard or he pretends to be ryan or jeff. I talk alot with him, before his giant bomb time, and thats just the way he talks. Even if the subject is cereal.

Probably because he had been listening to Jeff/Ryan on the Hotspot for many years before Giant Bomb. I don't really mind Kessler, but just sayin'.

Fickle gaf being fickle. Keep in mind that Kessler is probably the only person in the GB offices who can create any type of enthusiasm for JRPGs at this point.

i like how every time they aren't gushing about some random jrpg you weeaboos love a huge defence force amasses and shits up the thread for a few pages :lol

Yeah it totally can't be that not everyone's warming up to Kessler equally right ?

it's all about the weeabo's :S some of y'all need to stop jumping to conclusions.

This is the worst fucking post in this thread, and I don't even play JRPGs.

Really sad how you can't enjoy JRPG's or anime without being called a "weeaboo" these days. I think some of these people don't even known the meaning anymore.

I do agree with this post this following post though. You can't expect everyone to like a game like this.

I just finished watching the quick look and have to agree with this. That game was NOT made for quicklooks (so dull) and seeing it reminded me of why I could never enjoy the previous EO games.

When it is his fucking job to take part in a video of an informative nature, I at least expect the professional courtesy to actually PRETEND to give a shit about the game. Having a negative naysayer, whom everybody that is familiar with the site already know doesn't like these kind of games, doesn't provide ANYTHING to the video.

I personally couldn't give two shits about Etrian Odyssey, but Ryan's general behaviour is sometimes just appalling! He acts like a bored child through most of the video.

i don't go to giant bomb to hear what a jrpg fan thinks of jrpgs. i go so i can hear vinny and jeff scratch their heads at its absurdity and make funny jokes.

if i wanted a legitimate opinion on a jrpg, i'll listen to active time babble.

The point of a QL is not to give a legitimate opinion, it's to show [You! The viewer!] 20 or so minutes of the game, usually near the beginning. Most of the time they haven't even got far enough to see all the mechanics of the game.

Quick look was kinda confusing to be honest. I never understood the concept of Etrian. While reading descriptions I thought you had to draw/make the dungeons yourself and not draw what actually the layout is. I don't know why I thought that and it didn't help a lot that it wasn't explained very well at the beginning of the QL.

But now I know, thanks Giantbomb!

I kinda understand the negative feedback that Matt is getting but heck hes a young dude and an intern so he is still learning this stuff. The only thing he shouldn't do is forcing some of the jokes he makes or at least cool it down a bit on that side.

All in all we are getting some QL's and that is what counts.

Honestly, Ryan is probably my least favorite commentator for quick looks in general. He doesn't always do it, but he has a tendency to slip into this 'this is boring, why are we here, let's just get on with it' mode that gets kind of annoying. I guess some of it can be explained by him wanting to keep a good pace for a QL, but it gets on my nerves sometimes.

kesslers is getting ALOT of heat. the comments for that video is hilarious and kinda sad at the same time.

makes me wonder if the same thing happened when drew or dave or mike made their QL debuts.

iirc people always liked Drew and Dave.

I think Matt is fine honestly. Hopefully the staff doesn't give up on him because of peoples reactions. I think he'll be a good addition to video coverage stuff.

Is Mike an intern btw? I really like that guy. I hope he stays.

I don't mind Kessler. He's a cool kid.

I don't remember any negative backlash from either of those guys jumping on.

I am glad GiantBomb is bringing more people in to diversify their appeal and fill holes in their coverage. There was Dave and Mike for PC RTS and Sim games, now there's Kessler for JRPGs.

But yeah, this Etrian Odyssey QL is difficult to watch. Ryan seems to be doing a good job keeping Kessler focused on explaining the game, but his complete and absolute apathy with everything else is annoying and not at all funny or entertaining. Oddly, instead of the inexperienced intern ruining the Quicklook, it's the veteran.

Some people here might not come to GiantBomb for JRPG coverage, but if they're going to do it, they probably shouldn't be half-assing it, right? I don't even necessarily care about Etrian Odyssey, and something like this isn't going to help me decide one way or the other, so why bother at all?

What I'm saying is that Kessler needs to find a QL buddy that isn't completely offended by anime and standard JRPG formula.

Is Kessler the guy on the Arc Rise and EO3 videos?

he is...unoffensive. Part of the reasons I like quick looks is because you catch footage of a game with entertaining banter. I still watch for the game, not so much the entertaining part. You can't fault someone for not being entertaining and I wouldn't consider that a negative. It's fine if you stack it up against the hundreds of people on youtube or other sites doing similar types of videos. I'm just saying that Giantbomb has a higher standard is all.

also, I don't mean to say there shouldn't be quicklooks with the guy. They still bring solid game video with informative commentary.

As for adding diversity into the site, that isn't so much why I like the site. The cool thing about giantbomb is that they don't act obligated to do the same stuff the big sites and daft blogs do. Talk about what you know and all that. But again, if it doesn't cut into what I like about giantbomb, then whatever.

His Dragon Quest IX QL with Brad was pretty good, although it helps that Dragon Quest is actually interesting. Well, interesting by grind-heavy traditional-ass JRPGs anyway.

Matt has a weird sense of humour.

It's also always like he's trying to sell a game.

I don't really mind though.

I honestly think it's because people are jealous of Kessler.

I really doubt anyone is jealous of him to the extent of typing rage in the video comments. :lol

He's a new guy in a very close group. He has to give it time for it to feel natural. If he didn't expect people to not like him being on the site at first then he was delusional.

That said, I'm not sure if he's the type of guy that will grow on people. He seems kinda... bland. Hopefully my opinion will change because I really don't want to dislike someone on the site... especially if he makes it on to the podcast!

Matts alright in my book, I don't actively dislike him and I think theres potential for him to get better. The early quick looks (like the one for The Maw) are kind of weird and unwatchable now, so I feel pretty confident Matt will get better down the line.

The only thing that puts me off of him is when he tries to do lines during cutscenes. Stopped watching the Arc ql because of that.

EDIT- "Yeah yeah yeah. No one cares, no one cares." "I ca-" "Literally no one effin' cares." :lol

I wouldn't be suprised, 'how dare this douche try to explain EOIII, he's getting the intricate details of the game wrong, I could tell them how great it was if GB hired me'.

I like Kessler, I like that he's the intern, I like that they keep making a point of him being the intern. I think people want him to be the JRPG guy but he's seems to only be the JRPG guy relative to the rest of GB.

But yes, a Matt/Vinny QL next. As Vinny is the secret best GBer, he'd silence the Kessler criticisms. I thought Dave was okay at first, it wasn't until he starting doing QLs with Vinny that I realised how awesome he is, and I now categorically think that Vinny/Dave is the best combo.
