The only thing pretentious is that pretentious hipster bullshit Scott Pilgrim movie & game.
GAF will rage when both will crash & burn on release after the realization it has no market other than a small handful of people on the internet.
 
The only thing bad about the quick look was that they kept saying it ripped off River City Ransom. 'Inspired by' are probably the more correct words to use in that situation. It's not like Medal of Honor or Dante's Inferno.

It's not so much that, it was a "throwback" so much in previews; this in action seems like they cut things whole-cloth from other games. Animation is nice, though.
 
Game Room QLs are always so depressing. 99% of the games are shit and a complete waste of even 3 bucks. Jeff being 11th on the leaderboard with 0 points really says it all.

That's a little harsh. The game itself is decent, and it's a teen movie made for teenagers, you can't criticize it too much for that. That's like criticizing Pokemon for being kiddie.

dude i've read all of the books and if being in your 20s, sleeping late, not knowing what to do as a career, being slightly awakwerd around girls, playing video games all day, hanging out with your friends, and growing up is pretentious then i dont know what to tell you

I was just about to post in here that the Giant Bomb crew are becoming a bunch of old-ass men, and am glad to see that I'm not the only one who notices it. I love how Giant Bomb delivers their content and that they do a lot of fun and funny stuff, but their taste in and viewpoints on games is seriously starting to to get on my last nerve, especially Jeff. They seem to ignore or write off anything that lies outside of their comfort zone, which these days more or less comprises western-developed, console-based shooters, with a scattering of exceptions. I'm still shocked that Jeff actually liked Persona 4 and gave it his time in the first place, despite it lying way outside his comfort zone, but I think it's telling that he wrote off Persona 3 Portable after seeing it for a few minutes just because it doesn't have the exact same characters.

It was a joke. It was clear to me he didn't want to go through Persona 3 because of the sheer time investment. There's a reason they hardly ever review RPGs.

People dissing Jeff over being critical of their beloved Scott Pilgrim is a bit silly. The game is blatant in its River City Ransom theft, and while some references are clever, the game slams you with them over and over, like an overexcited five year old screaming in your ear about how clever he is. When you pile on reference after reference it ceases to become clever. It just seems to be a cover for a lack of personal creativity (the game and not the comics).

They should have played it two player though.

Considering that the artists who did the pixel art and chiptunes do video-game inspired stuff for a living and this project seemed to be just telling them "do what you always do and we'll put it in the game because that's what the franchise is really about," I'm not seeing it as a lack of creativity or being forced.

Jeff likes River City Ransom and is upset that darn kids are "stealing" his nostalgia.

I don't even like Scott Pilgrim and that's obvious.

You clearly haven't listened to Jeff enough, because he wasn't joking. He really doesn't want to play Persona 3 because it doesn't have the same characters. He wouldn't have liked Persona 4 either had he just done a quickie preview of it either, simply because it was a JRPG.
 
It's clear that Jeff preferred the story and the characters to the game play (although Vinnie casting Bufu is the highlight of the first ER), so it's not surprising that he wouldn't be invested in a game with an all new cast. It's like all the FF# > FF#2 talk that nerds like to have.

And really, as a Scott Pilgrim fan I can see why people who don't care would be put off by the whole concept. I mean, Comic Jumper is similar in that it uses visual style to invoke nostalgia and Brad seemed to like it back when they did that E3 QL of the game.

Also, Jeff's one of the few people who got mad at the fact that DICE might be making BF3 for consoles. I think that sort of places him within the pantheon of gaming. :lol

I can somewhat sympathize. Because it's going to consoles it's likely going to be very toned down graphically. It's the same reason that so many people were disappointed with the announcement that Crysis 2 was console-centric.


Also, could anyone else totally see Vinny as a standup comedian? Almost every joke he makes his gold, and done with impeccable timing.

There's a reason good movies aren't just a string of one-liners. Cool references just seem less cool if they happen every five seconds. Robert Patterson's, or whatever the artist's name is I can't quite remember, is normally a lot more subtle in his references. They're cool to see there because they're mixed in with him doing his own thing. Here he's catering to Scott Pilgrim, which feels pretty far from doing his own thing, though he probably really enjoyed the project.

And overall I think you're reading/listening too much into things. Don't take everything so seriously.

I agree, he's the opposite of subtle in everything he does, including referencing. He goes completely overboard with his references in his usual stuff. I enjoy that, actually. It's what makes him.

Subtle isn't the right word. I should have said less frequent. It helps that the videogame references normally fit what he's doing, instead of feeling more stuck in.

Now see, that isn't the main point he was arguing. I am in the same exact boat as Jeff (and Brad) in regards to Battlefield 3. It's the style of game in Battlefield that is PC-centric. The amount of controls there are, attack orders, the commander, the amount of players, the size of the maps, that franchise was made for PCs.

Seeing as they made Bad Company so they could finally break into the console market (I know there was Modern Combat but that was a flop) why can't they say they're making Bad Company 3? That's how the Battlefield feels on consoles, I really don't know how it's possible for them to change that.

Sorry for the rant, but that news came as a surprise and irked me too.

Scott Pilgrim makes me feel old and bitter. And I'm 21.
 
That Scott Pilgrim game looked 'meh' for a number of reasons:
  1. It's a brawler
  2. It's seethed in references, to the point that it has no personality of its own
  3. It's a brawler

On the Lara Croft QL I love the end when Rorie tries to say "Thanks for having me" and then said "I don't know if I said that right." You can here Vinny in the background laugh along with Ruan.

And Lara Croft looked much better than I expected, that actually looks like it could be great fun in a simple score attack/speed run kinda way.

Yea the game did look decent. I have to agree with what Rorie said about having an aiming reticle when using the spear. For the guns you shoot fast enough to track and make adjustments but that same can not be said for the spear.

I am not at all shocked that they didn't like this game considering that they (especially Jeff) have been saying that brawlers are dead for years now.

I am neither shocked at all the outrage about them not liking it, since we Scott Pilgrim fans love it ever so much and want others to enjoy it as well.
 
I don't remember them saying they didn't like Scott Pilgrim during the QL but I was sort of doing other stuff at the same time as watching it. I just thought he was talking about how close it was to previous games. But like I said I wasn't paying a lot of attention while watching the video.

Jeff did annoy me when he decided to give his impression of Scott Pilgrim despite constantly stating that he's never touch any material within the franchise, especially given they work with comic Vine. Why not bring a fan of the comic who works in the office into the quicklook as oppose to Brad who never adds anything to a quicklook he's not playing (and dying in) other than using meta as a prefix to every other work he says.

Watching it I feel people are overreacting a bit to Jeff's feelings toward the game. He did come off a bit as a "old man" but I don't see what he said that is offending fans of SP so much.
