I hate to be that guy complaining about them doing it wrong, but this time they really kind of did.

The things they complain about like the boss having a second form or the checkpointing are exactly like in every other Contra game ever, that kind of challenge is the whole point of a Contra game.

Hell, that motorcycle sequence is pretty much 1:1 with the original Hard Corps motorcycle sequence.

They are complaining that you fight three extremely boring bosses in a row and then may have to do two of them again if you miss a button prompt. Yeah, that is exactly the kind of challenge Contra is known for.

Any game that forces you to redo a major task, whether it be a boss or a section of a level or whatever, that you've already completed successfully is garbage. This is no excuse for such poor design.

I dislike the 'poor design' argument when it's brought up; it makes the person's opinion seem objective when it's just another way of saying 'I don't like it'. And I don't agree; I think it's old-fashioned game design, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it. The challenge may be beating all parts of a boss in a row, rather than any of the individual phases. Making you repeat dull boss encounters over and over is bad mostly because of the 'dull' part.

I just tried the Hard Corps demo and I've got 25 seconds in the loading screen. So, either their xbox is about to die or they need to delete the cache pretty badly.

Watching the Hard Corps QL, I was thinking "Yep, that looks like Contra Hard Corps alright". Only the art style seems all that different. If it doesn't look all that exciting to you, than you've probably been spoiled by Treasure games.

Hard Corps looked really bland, as it always has. The pacing and speed just seems wrong. I'd rather go play Contra Shattered Soldier, now that game is awesome.

That depends, is it your fault or QTE/cheapo design at fault?

Hell yeah! That game was awesome. I liked it more than Contra 4.

I also have to agree that HArd Corps seems to have some really bland design and is probably too od school for it's own good. The bad QTE stuff makes it even worse. I actually like the crazy Arc character design but that's not going to make me buy the game.

The About a Blob QL was fantastic. I played the demo but that did not convince, this QL showed me how fun the game can get.

It looked about 10 times easier than Contra Shattered Soldier.
doesn't make it right.

and why should pressing a single button a second too early or a second too late in a QTE invalidate what you just did in two straight boss battles? that's nonsense.

It's not really a QTE. You just have to jump twice, or jump very late. It's shitty, but that's basically the only time in the game they have such nonsense.

Jurassic Park does have some technical issues but I would imagine they'll be fixed before release. Aside from that I think it looks good and I'm looking forward to it. Not sure what people were expecting if they think otherwise.

because the game thinks you should have to beat both parts without dying to progress.

which honestly doesn't look like that much of a feat.

Scott Pilgrim says hey. Same case when they decide to go witty with their editorializing in news posts.

Considering how many people (including myself) hated the rather sterile sort of news/preview process, I don't mind it one bit that these guys have started to speak their minds rather than go "oh no we can't say anything negative in our pre-release coverage otherwise we'll be blacklisted" like everyone else.

I would like to think that I am intelligent enough to know when these guys aren't liking a game because it's genuinely bad or simply because they were blowing through tutorials too fast and weren't paying attention to obvious critical information.

I for one agree with the sentiment that Hard Corps Uprising feels a little bland. You shoot too slow, there aren't enough enemies, and a lot of them seem to take one too many shots to kill. There isn't the necessary atmosphere of "oh shit, everything is going crazy" like there was in Contra 3 (or even the original Hard Corps, for that matter).

The Contra gameplay balance seems to be the sort of thing that's very hard to get "right". The only game that's come close since the 16bit era is probably Contra 4 on the DS.

That's exactly what I do. And you know what, it's worked out great for me.
In my opinion, Quick Looks are the best thing about Giant Bomb's website.
Watching the guys play 20-30 minutes of a game has motivated me to buy MANY games I would have never given a chance.
In the case of Hard Corps, and some others, it steers me away from games that I would have regretted wasting my money on.

I hope you're taking everything about the footage into account or maybe more extensive research on a game after watching the QL, not just the guys opinion's about what they're playing.

Like, there are plenty of games that I really liked that they have trashed. Biggest example is Demon's Souls.

I hope you're smart enough to know when they are misrepresenting a game. For example when they knowingly skip tutorials and therefore end up not knowing about certain gameplay aspects and controls. Those are the Quick Looks I take issue with, they know their influence, they should be a bit more responsible in showing things off.

That being said, I personally don't take much notice of their opinions. Jeff especially has shown a shocking ignorance when speaking critically about some games. All I'm looking for from their video content is entertainment and that they try to fairly represent the game, regardless of their feelings toward it.

Yeah, I think I'm smart enough to make up my own mind about things.
Even this NeoGAF thread is helpful.
I know GAFers have no problems calling them out when they're playing it wrong, or fail to show off some crucial gameplay point.
My taste in games is very different from the Giant Bomb guys, so its not uncommon for me to like games they won't. I have no interest in first person shooters and fighting games, for instance.
The value of the Quick Looks to me is introducing me to games I would not otherwise have heard about, and seeing some basic gameplay.
I've purchased a number of games they actively disliked because I liked how they looked and played.
I had never even heard of Nier until the Quick Look. Brad was fairly down on it due to the repetitive gameplay, but I knew it was a game I would enjoy right away.
Other games like Ghost Trick, About a Blob and You Don't Know Jack I had no initial interest in. However, after watching the Quick Looks and seeing how fun they were I've bought and played through each of them.

Definitely the right attitude to have goodsir, I wish more people who watched the videos thought about them like you do. It frustrates me to know end seeing people dismiss a video because the GB guys played it in the most mundane fashion and did nothing but put the game down. Things should always be taken in context, especially when dealing with such weirdly varying opinions.

Well said post above me. Echoes my sentiments completely.

And, yeah, I'm not saying I don't enjoy the QLs. I think they're great, and they have definitely opened my eyes to games I wouldn't have otherwise looked at. But I do think they sometimes trash games waaaaay too quickly, and worry that people then watching them write them off as quickly as they do. Especially games with demos. Doesn't hurt to just try it yourself. Guess that was my original point.

SPLITSCREEN! They might not be excited for it, but I'm totally pumped. Racing games are the most fun on the same couch multiplayer.

I thought the Jurassic Park quick look made it look awesome, sure there's some stuff that needs cleaning up, but it still looks fun. Hope they get the license for the John Williams score! Couldn't hear any in the QL.

Dude getting stabbed by a Tricerotops / Chomped by a T-Rex is awesome in my book.

Dirt 3 looks really great, and looks like exactly the sort of racing game I'd love. I've never touched the series and don't know why now. Add me to the "genuinely stoked" column for split screen, too.

I thought Battersea Power Station was well known pretty much everywhere.

I knew it was a GAF member's name. I always assumed it was a band or album. Took me a second to realize that you were referencing the video.

The username could be a reference to Pink Floyd I guess.

I imagine it's fairly well known from being in Children of Men too.
