I'm surprised to hear the opinion The Witcher seems optimized for gamepad control. It's good for me personally as I'll no doubt be playing it on a console, but it's surprising. It looks awesome though, looks heavy on adventure compared to most RPGs which is cool to me. It's going to be a long wait I imagine, but looks great.

Similar thing for Cathy really, I'm in the UK, and I could import it, but I'll hold out a little while hoping we see a UK release, could be a year till I play that really.

It's not really surprising to hear that from Ryan, though. If I read that same opinion in the PC Gamer review, I'll be surprised.

A fair point yeah, it certainly could just be that. The UI for the most part looked very controller friendly though.
 
Which is great, even if the console versions turn out to be vaporware. So many PC gamers have the 360 pad hooked up that it's worth supporting it properly in most games.

I still use the old XBCD drivers on mine so I had to fiddle around with it to get it working properly with Portal 2, but I assume for most people it worked without any trouble. I didn't actually want to play Portal 2 on the PC with the 360 pad; I just didn't like that when I tried it the buttons weren't assigned properly.

It's a very controller friendly PC game. Keyboard/Mouse works fine, but they really did put a lot of effort into making sure either control option was viable. Combat is actually more fun with a controller IMO as well.

I agree with this sentiment.

Roughly 14 hours into the Witcher 2 myself, I was using M/KB but eventually switched to a 360 pad and it's definitely more fun.

Yes I played the original twice.

I don't believe the first game had official gamepad support so I had to use M/KB. Then again, the first game's combat was pretty bad and heavily QTE based so I'm not sure if it would even work well.

I don't want to derail the thread any further, but I have a final question. TW2 looks very dense in terms of the world lore, is it okay to dive in with the sequel or do I need to play the original before hand? I've played a couple of hours of it but I wasn't that keen. This looks a lot more exciting to me.

You're better of asking this in the Witcher 2 OT but here's my take:

I'll admit the first game is pretty dated but luckily, the developers have stated that you don't need to play the first game to enjoy the second.

I would personally recommend, at the very least, reading a synopsis of the first game just so you know what's going on.

i agree, the comparisons to Dirt made ZERO sense. Sega Rally is such a classic arcade-style game that comparing them is just unfair.

The Persona 4 Endurance Run is, go search for that, it's some of GB's best ever content. (The Deadly Premonition ER is too, but that's nowhere near as good)

Yeah, it won some indie awards in 2009 and 2010. It was announced for PSN in 09 and they've improved the visuals quite a bit since then

I'm playing Witcher 1 now using a gamepad and it is fucking awesome. It doesn't have native support, so I am using a 3rd party program and a custom profile someone else made(with a few of my own tweaks) for the game, but it works amazingly which I was shocked at. I'm mid Act 2 and never once have I touched the kb/m outsidwe of launching the game.

Not that Witcher 1 was really a problem with m/kb, but navigating the environment(and the slog through big environments) is so much more comforting with the analog stick than holding the W key. Combat only needs the triggers too(L for signs, R for attack) since it is hardly an action game and pulling the right trigger for the QTE chains is no different from tapping the mouse button to do the same. I can't really go back, so comfortable.

Little late on this, but it's pretty frustrating to see Ryan play this game without an ounce of curiosity about the combat system. Are there multiple attack buttons? Are there multiple grabs? "LOL god of war" gets old pretty fast. They also proclaim that it doesn't iterate on the formula at all after playing 15 minutes, from the beginning.

I'm not defending the game per se; I haven't played it and I don't have that much interest. But this is a really thoughtless, almost willfully dismissive presentation of it.

not a QL but i think the friday show where Jeff played galgun was free for non-members.. i could be wrong though. that was amazing

It can have an audience. Folks that never owned a console and have no idea about that franchises (yea those exist) - may find this cheap game on Steam a decent distraction.
