Wow how badly can Jeff mess up the lever-pulling in the DNF quicklook? I mean... he has played MANY videogames before, right?

I see what he was TRYING to do (wait until the elevator was close to the bottom and pull it so it wouldn't stop too soon), but why would that even come to mind.

I haven't played the game, but the idea is to just pull the lever until the gauge at the bottom (heat, I'm guessing) is almost full, let it cool off, and repeat until the elevator comes to a halt?

That DNF QL was hard to watch for all the wrong reasons.

Yea, almost thought about muting Jeff/Ryan. I've never seen them so depressed sounding.

Infamous 2 did not seem very good either. At least creatively. I haven't checked the OT to see what the consensus is yet, but nothing in the Quick Look seemed inspired or validating of a full blown sequel. Game just looks so lifeless, and almost identical to the first.

It's a pretty good game and an improvement on the first.

Yup, that's how you do it. It's surprising Jeff didn't figure that out. It should have been a big hint seeing the elevator go down super fast when he didn't touch the lever at all.

As a sidenote, I really don't like how Jeff was negative as hell regarding the game. I understand it's disappointing, but he could at least have tried to show off some of the cool stuff in the game instead of only going for the bad stuff. Some of his arguments makes little sense too, if he thinks following modern conventions is so darn important why the heck does he like something like SF4 so much? That game was directly based on a game which is far older than Duke3D. Old gameplay design isn't necessarily a bad thing (if anything, DNF is harmed by following too modern conventions, like regenerating health and the 2 weapon limit). DNF has its share of problems, but Jeff exaggerated like hell.

Edit: I can say the same thing about Demon's Forge. Jeff is negative as hell... but the game didn't actually look all that bad. That's one reason why I prefer Dave and Vinny in quick looks, they're always there to have fun, not to criticize a game.

I get the impression from the guys who've been reviewing games for a living for years (Jeff, Ryan, Brad) that they're generally jaded and tired about reviewing video games. It's understandable, but it simply makes their opinions feel further away from my own opinions. After all, actual gamers don't play through every single hit game that's released back-to-back. People like Vinnie and Dave who play games simply to have fun and have the free time to invest deeply into a single game will obviously end up with more insightful opinions about individual games rather than full-time reviewers who have to rush through a stack of games.

Heehee, you should listen to Day 2 of the E3 Bombcast. Jeff basically vents about how people misunderstand him about being jaded. :)

I kinda zoned through that bombcast, any idea what time range he talks about it?

SFIV is a great example of taking a classic game and updating it to meet modern standards. It mixes in a lot of new features but still keeps the core fundamentals approachable for newcomers and returning fans.

Duke didn't really evolve so I think Jeff just outgrew it. Seems like it was tailor made to turn off anyone that takes it at face value.

DNF is dated, ugly, boring, unfunny, and in the case of the crying naked lady cave of mercy killing, kind of disturbing. What is there to praise, exactly? Other than that it actually finally shipped. Go on, tell me. What was Jeff supposed to be thrilled about, here? Because that has to be the most oppressive game and quick look I've seen in a while.

Could they be anymore anti dnf? Game looks stupidly fun, why does every shooter have to be a superscripted war drama?
I think you may be missing the point. Did you actually listen to anything they said in the quick look? I don't think it not being Modern Warfare was their problem, dude.

Also, what game were you watching? Nothing in that looked remotely fun to me. I saw "Got Milk?" jokes, half-baked "puzzles", bad platforming, and hilarious dialogue about Olsen twin facsimiles being raped by an alien. Oh yeah, that looked like a hoot.

Those guys aren't anti-non-CoDs at all. Boarderland got more love than it ever warranted from them for example.
Yea, Jeff loved Borderlands right from the start. Hell, he was the most positive guy about it before other outlets caught on.

Duke Nukem Forever is garbage. It's so bad it makes me want to go back in time to kill the 13-year-old version of myself for liking Duke Nukem 3D and helping to make this game possible in the first place.

- The Devastator holds 69 ammo. Huhuhuh, 69.
- The elevator in Duke's hotel goes to the 69th floor. Huhuhuh, 69.
- The Holsom twins. Get it? It's like the Olson twins, and it's ironic because they're not at all wholesome!
- There's a brand of cigarrettes called Faggs, whose mascot is a leather daddy.
- The Alien Queen has three tits. Awesome!

And that's not even getting into the idiotic one-liners. There's probably a couple dozen of them, if not hundreds, and not a single one lands.

Jeff and Ryan both sound about ready to drop dead in that DNF QL. That game also looks horrendous. Shame, but hey, at least it's over now.

Yah, Jeff sounds like he's dying. I guess e3 really took it out of them. And he sounds freaking miserable playing DNF.

The DNF quicklook would be just as negative, but more entertaining if Vinny replaced Ryan. Vinny would probably try to find positives, but fail trying every time. He would also probably laugh at how outrageously bad the jokes were instead of sounding depressed. The game and the quicklook mood was just way too depressing altogether.

Also Duke Nukem Forever is more like Call of Duty than people want to admit.

The enemies and stuff in DNF seem like they're made of paper or something. When you kill them they just .. Poof, like a balloon or styrofoam.

That hive level was disturbing on so many levels. I've played my fare share of grotesque games but that part of the quicklook made me incredibly uncomfortable.

It really is shameless. Like others have said, watching Jeff shoot a crying nude tortured woman in the face and being treated to awkward corpse boob jiggling and utter silence from Duke made me uncomfortable in a way games rarely ever do. And this is supposed to be a comedy game, not a gruesome drama. Who thought that was entertaining? Why is that even in there?

Not to mention, as Jeff put it, Duke's "weird uncle" one liners. They were funny in Duke 3D, but it doesn't really play in 2011. Hell, it probably wouldn't play in 2003. It just comes off as forced and kind of pathetic.

Vinny makes everything better. I imagine he would still be repulsed at that naked chick cave though, lol.

In Duke 3D that stuff didn't really bother me, but it is kinda disturbing in this game. Maybe it's the moaning and vomit noises.

Yeah the hive part was weird. When you killed these hived up babes in Duke 3D you were actually punished by an alien teleporting in.

Jeff's description of Duke as the weird uncle is too fucking good lol. Does everyone here have a family member like that? I do and I never realized the similarity before.

My major complaint is his attitude in general. It's not very entertaining to watch a quick look of someone ranting. They should have just let someone else do the quick look.

Should they have gotten someone to pretend that it's not a terrible game? They weren't trying to make a bad video, they were acting negative because they weren't having any fun with the game.

I always found Duke to be funny in an ironic way, so bad its good. DNF worked for me on that sense, but the humor wasnt even what i liked the most of it, i just really had fun.

And for those who find it offensive.. what did you expect? its the only franchise in gaming that is allowed to get away with this stuff, cause everyone knows it comes from the lowest form of imagination the writers can come up with. Its not supposed to represent what they feel at all.

Pitchford even said he would be glad if a Womens right group took DNF as an example to fight for their rights, and not in a "bring it on!" kinda way, but in a serious "no harm done" way.

Its supposed to be over the top, its supposed to disgust you, its supposed to make you feel ashame. It works in what it tries to do. Nobody thought "oh floor 69, this is HILARIOUS!" when they were writing the game, they just thought people would laugh at how stupid and over the top it is. I just rolled my eyes with a smile, i didnt laugh out loud, but i wasnt all "UGH IM MUCH BETTER THAN THIS, THIS IS FOR RETARDED PEOPLE" while sipping my fancy tea.

does pop music, junk food and porn make you embarrassed to say you like music, food and movies too?

Just a bit overly reductive, don't you think?

Not only is Duke Nukem Forevr offensive to anyone with a modicum of adult sensibilities, it's a bad game to boot. There is nothing redeemable about this garbage. Fortunately, it doesn't yet seem to be on the radar of anything other than enthusiast press, so I can only hope that it will quickly be buried into obscurity and forgotten.

Having to play this dated, sloppy game after seeing stuff like Bioshock Infinite and Prey 2 in person must be a real slap in the face.
