Guys, I learned something important today.

... Deus Ex fanboys are fucking crazy. Like, I don't think Nintendo or IOS fanboys are this bad.
...But Patrick is a Deus Ex fanboy, so I am confused.

Gotta say, I kinda enjoyed the whole crazy Deus Ex, "lets get the pitchforks ready and go get him" discussion on a guy's opinion on a game.

Thanx for the entertainment dudes. You made at least half an hour here at work all that much easier to pass by :P

I wish they would do a bit more research before jumping in to a game, I mean the basics.. like setting up the controls.
Sometimes that's the premise - quick looks show first minutes of the games and how it operates, including figuring out the controls.

It's hillarious in Gran Turismo quick look for example how much they have to fight with the game to even start playing it; or in the Conduit videos how they can't make the control feel 'natural'.

Sure, there are quick looks that are not that, but what can you do.

what really bugs me is that even since they put 'Our editors provide commentary as they play through 20 minutes or more of uninterrupted gameplay.' on the quick looks page, they have still put up some quick looks that are less than 20 minutes. if it was up to me they would all be an hour.

An hour? I think 20-25 minutes is the sweet spot

Forget all of that. E.Y.E quick look is up. Will watch it right after the Deus Ex quick look.

Edit: Ohh listening to that Anachronox hate. Yeah couldn't get into that game.

I think ten minutes would be the best cut-off point. There are very few games that benefit from being shown past that mark.
The longer the better. People can stop watching whenever they want. I love a nice long QL.

Well console games are a different story, but in a PC game I figure that's a given.. who doesn't config their game when you boot it up for the first time?

Ok yeah you people over reacted to Brad's comments about the visuals. He just said it looks better, and I sure as hell would hope that it did.

Edit: But oooooooh they totaly didn't tweak the settings for the new renderer. The contrast is way higher than it should be. There is a lighting method that's turned on by default for some reason that you need to turn off.

Edit: Buuuuuuut completely disagree on almost everything Brad said about System Shock 2. Ain't taking those previous posts back.

Sadly it appears we need much more, at least when Brad is in charge.

I have no favourites at Giant Bomb, but gosh darn if he doesn't spent almost the first entire ten minutes in the menus.

The new E.Y.E quick look is a great example.

No it's a terrible example. Because that game is nothing like what modern day linear console shooters are supposed to be.

You have confused me, Lostconfused.

I think you misunderstood my point. Games such as E.Y.E or any branching/in-depth game requires much more than ten minutes to get an accurate picture, as people have to take a longer time to go through the many features.

In Brad's case he likes to show all the features first, then move onto the gameplay. Which is fine! Ten minutes is not long enough most of the time, however.

Sorry I guess I misunderstood you. But even then a few more minutes to spend on E.Y.E wouldn't have changed much. You either need to go read through a wiki/guide or play the game for at least several hours before you begin to understand how it kind of works.

Absolutely, I agree.

A lot of the quick looks can lose steam and therefore should be cut down, but games such as E.Y.E do deserve that 30-60 minute length to get an accurate reflection on the game with the time they have available. I think they did a great job with this quick look.

It's even better because you have the PC persecution complex on top of it, the plebes can't possibly appreciate this high concept artistry.

Well, the last few pages certainly explains why GB guys don't post on GAF much.

Jesus.

It's not just gaf. People on the internet are major assholes, just read the comments on the E.Y.E quick look and you'll find a couple of flamers.

Goddamit Brad! This is all your fault!!!!

Maybe a bit offtopic, but what did GB crew say about Deus Ex: Rev?

I heard they had some negative impressions of it? What did they say about it exactly?

Seems like Vinny and Dave are the only ones left at GB who are willing to put up with something that isn't streamlined to "modern" standards. Maybe Drew too, but it's been a while since he did a quick look.

Cliffs of Dover is archaic as hell.
