The GiantBomb Quick Look Thread

I didn't mean it to be disdainful but I had to comment because it's so baffling to me. I like the Giant Bomb guys. I'm not saying they aren't qualified to do their jobs or anything. I'm offering genuine criticism, not meaning to wound or belittle anyone.

It just makes for very frustrating viewing. I think this is the second time I've complained about it, the first being Zelda which was insane. It's not disdain, it's just expressing what I and others thought of the video. If you don't like reading criticism, I recommend you never come to NeoGAF again.
The Zelda thing was hard to watch, I agree. But I can still see the circumstances so thankfully my blood pressure stays low :)

I can see that, yeah. Still, most of the responses feel disdainful for the wrong reason.

I only really take issue with it when it makes a game look actively worse than it actually is because they are missing something that shouldn't be missed by anyone that had played more than ten minutes.

I fully admit that it's hard to judge from the perspective of knowing a game inside and out and watching someone who doesn't.

But my claim isn't limited to ICO and SOTC, I see this kind of thing regularly in Quicklooks, and I have never played most of the games they show. Like I said, it's not about knowing a particular game very well, it's about having a keen intuitive sense about how games, in general, work. This sense is built through experience, and they definitely have experience.

I agree with this post, how do they miss obvious still like tutorials/blinking shit and stuff. Man...

There seems to be gamma issues with the game during the intro in ICO. Everything is way dark.

edit: yeah gamma problems in the entire game...ICO on PS2 is not even half this dark.

There's a brightness slider at least. I'm just glad it's not super washed out like some of those recent screens.

Is it true that in SOTC if you put the sword away you can grip longer? I didn't know that. (Ryan just said that and Brad agreed.)

oops sorry for double post

edit: and in conclusion Brad made SOTC looks really bad by repeatedly saying he fell off even though he didn't let go of the button, thus leading ignorant viewers to think the game is capricious and frustrating

I think you do.

I like these guys, but man that was pain. Running into the same brickwall over and over again expecting a different result from the same action. And two of them, no less...although judging from Ryan's laughs maybe he knew better. :P

Huh. Actually learned a couple of things I didn't know about SOTC right there. I don't think I ever tried putting away the sword to grip longer / move better, I'll have to play around with that. Also I only ever hit the first boss once in the calf then jumped up, don't think I ever saw that cutscene of him keeling over after two strikes.

But fucking hell, dat grip meter. This is the first time one of their Quick Looks has been really grating to me. So many facepalms.

All the comments about Brad not recognizing the grip meter draining are hilarious.
I think I may have played through the game back in the day without realizing there was a grip meter...

Maybe not. I didn't remember it at first though.

In all fairness, they're also trying to hold a steady conversation and think of stuff to say while they're playing...not all their attention is solely on the game. But having said that, they do show a startling lack of common sense at times, haha.

I'm sorta curious if Brad ever knew about the stamina meter. Surely, he couldn't have beaten the game the first time around without knowing, right?

Let the record show, that Brad Shoemaker, did in fact, not once release the hold button.

brad could quick look super mario bros. 1, never find the run button, consistently die to the first goomba, and never beat the first stage, and people would still rush in to say "he's not that bad guys, i wouldn't do any better"
The best part of that statement is that there's actually a video on giant bomb where it happens.
Although to be fair, Brad was blindfolded during the recording.

I know they say that the Serious Sam build was early, but I really don't like the look of it.

Thankfully I still haven't played all of SS:HD 1st+2nd encounter, so I'll be able to wait for a nice price drop before jumping on this.

Great, now I'm going to be up till 4am trying to beat 1-1 with my monitor turned off.

Perhaps the most frustrating statement. It's great when game critics rush to blame the game instead of perhaps considering there's something missing on their part.

The bad play wasn't as frustrating, as much as the rapid assumption that it was the games fault and the potential influence that could have on the GB audience. Thankfully I'm going assume most people watching this video already know better.

Wow that was actually painful to watch. I didn't think it would be that bad but arggg.

But to be fair I remember I had problems at first with the demo, but by the time I got to the full game I was a fucking ninja at taking those collosi down.

The worst part is that Brad seemingly never learns, he KNOWS he is terrible at games and yet he continues to act like it`s the games fault every time.

I like Giantbomb well enough, but there are times when watching their quick looks or listening to their podcasts where I just want to scream "WHAT THE FUCK, THAT'S NOT RIGHT WHAT ARE YOU DOING STOP THAT NOW AWHDUFJGHEWADIJ" and always thought, "Maybe that's just be being a random internet douche." I'm glad to know that as I screamed in my mind at the Ico/Sotc quick look I wasn't alone.

Also, they hate the couch? No, the couch, and the music that plays, are incredible. Absolutely incredible. Oh and the same guy that said that said that Ico didn't look much improved. smh

I've reached the save point in ICO... what's the rage all about? Brad's doing good so far?

So I am assuming you haven't read any of the complaints then? I mean people are outright saying that they are just glossing over the grip meter and complaining about how they have no idea why they are falling off the colossus.

Brad doesn't know how the grip mechanic works in SotC.

I play basically every game either with or in front of a friend and hold conversations constantly, if anything it sometimes helps me play better.

Sometimes I do things lazily or half-interested on purpose just to see what the game's margins of error are, but I don't think that's the case here either.

That said, if I was making videos, I'd practice before hitting record.

I always thought SotC was mind numbingly uninteresting, but I find myself in a much different mindset after watching this, to the point where I think I'm going to have to give this a whirl with it's now steady and not headache inducing framerate.

ChuckNoLuck said:
Let me bring your hopes down now with the fact that he doesn't even defeat the first Colossi.
Seriously, SotC is passion for me. I might go on an outrage if what you say is true.

I'm quitting this quick look right now. ICO just ended so...

edit: And since I'm not going to continue watching... can someone PLEASE tell me why Ryan didn't help Brad?

You say that now, but what if you had other responsibilities to do on your site? You can't blame them for going in cold. You should just be glad they put something up there.

He either also didn't know or he enjoys seeing Brad fail.

Possibly both.
Ryan never played SotC.

He never played it and the grip meter must have been is his blind spot.

Curufinwe said:
I fell like if Vinny was there instead of Ryan he would have noticed the pink circle and helped Brad out.
Oh they noticed it, they just thought it was more of an indicator of where the weak spot was by shrinking when close to the spot.
