Whiskey Media is off-loading all their non-subscriber video content to Youtube. The non-subscriber video player will now just be embedded Youtube videos at 360p resolution.

Question: Will the subscribers still get the Giant Bomb player for quicklooks and the like?

Yep. Subscribers won't notice a change. Subs will get videos directly hosted on WM's servers. Non-subs get Youtube embeds.

Thanks for the info.

When watching the Uncharted 3 QL hosted on YouTube and they kept saying how beautiful the game was I just couldn't see it in the murky video.

Yeah. 360p videos look like total garbage. I can't believe they didn't post them at 480p.
 
Ever since the change, the videos player has been displaying twice for me. One using the Whiskey video player, the second is right below it, using the youtube player.

I have no idea how to make it go away.

LOLz at their youtube videos being only 360p. They look worse than their old flash player. Oh wells, they need to pull in subs somehow.
 
Oh yeah, there is a noticeable difference between youtube and GBs player definitely (as shown in the Gifs and comparison pics and I'm glad I'm a sub so I can still use the GB player).

Just posted that to show that they were/are 360p on GB too.
 
I am not 100% sure on how Youtube works, but it seems the original file Giant Bomb upload to Youtube (the highlited one) is bigger than the lowest quality (Mobile) download they have available on their site to subscribers (which is a 480 x 270 ), which means Giant Bomb are uploading a decent quality video to Youtube, but what Youtube spits out, as a FLV, looks inferiour.

I am sure they would like it too, but serving us video costs money.

I remember Ryan saying he hosted a few songs on his own personal webspace for Trackmania 2, and even though it is mostly only the Giant Bomb community that use Jeff's Trackmania Server that access' the music, he was up to multiple GBs of usage in a couple of days.

If only a few 5MB songs that did that - then imagine the same community consuming 300MB+ videos daily. Costs are probably stupidly high
 
Would serving you 720 video through Youtube cost them more money?

I guess it would remove some incentive from subscribing, but if you don't offer enough quality to incentivise switching over in the first place, well...
 
I cant even watch the HD videos because my connection is too slow but I dont care, I think it makes sense to have it as a premium subscriber thing because it probably takes a lot of bandwidth.

youtube seems like a clever way to save on bandwidth, I'm sure they will sort out the video quality issues

Not if you are using Youtube...

Which they are now.

I'm a subscriber also, but I think the quality needs to be improved for non subscribed users.

Especially since competitor sites offer HD quality for free.

With a site driven by video, you would think they would put a little bit more emphasis on it and not skimp. Gamersyde/Gametrailers are also all about video and offer higher quality stuff. As it stands now, if I see a new trailer on GiantBomb I rarely ever watch it there because the quality is inferior.
 
wait do non-subscribers only get youtube? i'm a subscriber and when i mouse over the player before i press play i can choose streaming, progressive, html5 or youtube, and it defaults to youtube.

Subscribers can choose YouTube if they want to.

Non subscribers get access to the streaming option which retains the original quality and player, otherwise the player will switch to the youtube player when it starts. They still look like they're transitioning over so a lot of the new videos still under progressive will play with the original player for non subscibers.

No one said it was a problem but logic would follow that this will get phased out for non subscribers since YouTube'd videos don't have the option at all.

Actually, go on. I have no idea about that. I have never uploaded anything to the site, but I presumed you could upload for free - although having a custom channel was pay.

edit - I think I see what you mean by this statement now, which is the same thing I was saying. Serving all there user free/subscriber using there own video was costing them stupid high amounts of money - more than we even think. So going to youtube really was their only option - that or put ads in front of non-subscriber videos, which I remember them saying they would not do.

Anyway, I do not see the huge problem in this. The only bad thing about the move to youtube is the dip in quality - which is not their fault, it is youtube. They are uploading pretty much the same file as their low option "mobile" on thier site, and Youtube is making it look worse. That is an easy fix - once you give the site a while to fix it, and not complain like crazy after a few days.

Yeah, with the changes to their system, it looks like the popularity of their content has died down a bit... it's probably manageable to merge the various GB threads again.
 
I refuse to subscribe until there is a way to subscribe only to GB. No offense to the other sites at Whiskey, I'm sure wonderful people work there, But fuck em. I want Giant Bomb content and I will not subsidize the entire whiskey brand.

Also the youtube quality is shit and I probably will be going there a bit less as a result.

What do you know, you get Giant Bomb content by subscribing! And Tested is great, even if they only do little subscriber content. (I mess happy hour tested).
