I think it was a case of a bad release date, being in between BF3 and Skyrim.

I, along with many others in the WitN, are really enjoying the game though. It's far from perfect but it's still great fun, especially in co-op.
 
So I guess I'm imagining the audio quality reduction? Nobody picked up on it. I might be losing my hearing, turning into Beethoven, tomorrow.

They've been releasing trailers pretty regularly. It was also at Eurogamer Expo, I played some there, seemed solid.

I think it's probably just a case of it falling under the radar a bit because of things like Skyrim coming out now too.
 
BTW, does anyone else this meebo social bar crap... seriously... them putting all of that fb like crap on their page almost got me to go away... at the moment, this meebo is getting really close to making me want to just stab someone at GB in the face with a dull spoon! I mean I know subscribers don't see it, but like I said, I am not one of those people who don't sign in sometimes when I am not at home, and, lets just say it is just a little more than annoying.

They re-encode everything, even videos. It's stupid, but it's the way their video stuff is set up.

From listening to Vinny talk about it, issues they had, solutions they found out and other stuff over the years, it seems to me that their video editing line is pretty much like this:

Record a Video (or, like in the trailer situation, get a video provided by a publisher) -> edit a video in high definition (if it's content they make, if it's trailers this step does not apply) -> upload said high definition video to a cloud encoding solution (huge upload, as I imagine those masters are not that compressed) -> download the 3 differently encoded videos (low, high, hd)-> upload to amazon hosting services -> upload one of these videos do youtube

Im not 100% sure they have to download from whatever cloud encoding solution and then upload to amazon or if that step is automatized (from the encoding solution directly to amazon).

But that's why most video issues on GiantBomb can't really be addressed by them: It's out of their hands. Other than bitrate tweaking, and even that must be limited, there's not much they can do. B-Frames, V-Frames, quantizers, misc specifications are probably all locked down (because, if I had to guess, all outsourced video encoding is done by hardware encoders).

If you ask me, it's a shitty solution. The amount of time you spend sending data back and forth is horrendous. I believe they have a 40mbit up and down connection, but still. However, I don't know if they can, in budget, be spitting out 3 versions of a video in a timely manner for the amount of video content they put up. And if the encoding machines breaks down, the site is left with no video content for how long that machine takes to be fixed. The Tricaster they had set up for live content is still down, and it's putting a massive stress on Vinny and Drew, which clearly reflects on the quality of the live content (and also recorded content) they make. Imagine if they couldn't put videos up at all.

It takes me 3 hours to downsample and deinterlace a 1080i video to a 480p format. If I wanted to downsample that 1080i to 720, 480 and 360, it would take me nine hours. For one 49 minute video content. How many of these videos does GiantBomb put up a day? I don't upload them anywhere either. So you can add the upload times to these videos. With that in mind, the Time it takes to publish adds up really fast.

Uploading videos to youtube added another layer of complexity to their system. Since it's for free members only, I can understand why they won't bother to upload anything other than 360p videos. SPECIALLY trailers which are already available in HD on youtube itself.

Why would they waste time and resources re-uploading the GTAV trailer to youtupe in 720p (or 480p), when a 1080p version already exists, probably even an official one?
Linking to that from the homepage also serves no purpose, as it would take time to research where's the "official" version of the trailer was, sometimes the official version of the trailer is not even on youtube, and sometimes the video gets taken down (if it's not the official version). Who wants to do that?

One could argue that uploading a 360p version is also a waste of time - I agree. But I believe official videos on a website like GiantBomb are a waste of time in the first place. But they have to put these videos up, otherwise the publishers will get mad at them.

Uh, yeah, but that is still the crap that I feel like Giantbomb and Whiskey media in general was above of. I dunno, how much of that stuff do you, or would you use? I have never used one of those "add to your fav social" ever, on any website! I know where the address bar is if I need to copy a link... kthx.

Yeah, it's not great. The Cave Story Quick Look doesn't sound balanced right at all.

Those useless social bars give money to Whiskey Media. They chose one that's not as intrusive as others.

They have to make money somehow. See it like this: You either pay the 8 dollars a month to have the website or experience it for free, while Media Bars, regular ads and YouTube revenue provide those 8 dollars a month for them.

There's no magical marketing solution that will both provide money and not be intrusive. Whiskey Media itself has been hunting that white whale for 3 years. They still don't do "list" news, which demand you to click on 5 pages to see their top10, they don't provide full screen on top of everything ads that you need to wait 5 seconds to close, they don't have mouse over huge pop-up windows that obscure half the website... I could go on.

Or you could, you know, go back to IGN and their amazing coverage and AD solution.
 
Also the Meebo bar slows down loading. It got added to SA for like a day (or at least Lowtax wanted to) before it got taken off because people complained that pages took way longer to load.

I watched the first 10 mins or 15 mins of the quick look, and it looks a little repetitive minus cool loot or interesting enemies.

Also, seems like there aren't many skills.

I guess the main appeal is the co-op. Does this have internet play and can 3 players play?

i'm confused, are you talking about the video quality, or saying that the quicklook volume reducing thing will happen again?

The Sonic QL is kind of annoying, in that it's a full 4 minutes of Ryan talking about the game, taunting us with the level select screen, and then 6 minutes of him playing a bonus level. Now at the 10-minute mark, looking at a bonus loadout screen or something.

Show us the damn game and quit with the teases.

Except we had a 'real' Sonic game with Colours actually being good. The only thing 'off' about it was that it didn't have MegaDrive physics.

He shows off the hub world, shows off levels for both Classic and Modern Sonic, shows off the upgrade system, how the challenges work, pieces of the story, and even a rival fight and a boss fight. Outside of trying to speedrun one of the levels or something, the Quick Look shows off nearly everything the game has to offer in a condensed package. It was really well done, in my opinion.

He just did it in the wrong order. I don't care one bit about the game, really, but with a game like this, the very first thing he should do is just show the very first Green Hill Zone level. That's what most people are going to care about. Then he can explain the nuts and bolts of everything else about the game. And with some context it makes a little more sense.

IMO, he should have done something like this:

show off two Classic and Modern Sonic levels
show off hub world
show off a challenge (race/co-op)
show off boss battle
less talking about Sonic's history etc. etc., which I suspected would dominate the QL.
 
Chemical Plant is in this? Sort of want now, Sonic 2 was the only Sonic I liked.

Also, It's funny to see this game now just after I finished watching the lastest Egoraptor video. That chaos telling you what to do is exacly what he was bitching about.
 
You know, I like how youku does ads. They splat an ad over the video div for like 1.5 secs, then let you watch the content. It's fucking genius in my opinion.

Only got this far in the QL before I left for work, but felt similarly. Goddamnit Ryan, just go to a stage already and THEN focus on the side shit. Context!

It's a lot of fun in co-op, but yeah I wouldn't exactly call it a spectator game.

Worth mentioning is that this has vertical splitscreen local co-op on console, with a third person online. Also, each character can see different secrets, so it does actually promote fishing around each area after you're done fighting to hunt down hidden chests.

The loot and the contextual stuff do add variety. The enemy types, not so much.
 
Hahahaha... I clicked on the Besties for Children of Men on Screened and it loaded the youtube player (even if I'm a member...ugh...anyway) and it says that the embed is disabled and that I have to watch it on youtube. The whole thing is so terrible, ugh.

This seems to be a more common thing in recent GB Quick Looks. Rage had ten minutes of walking around playing minigames and explaining various minutiae before getting to the driving and shooting portions of the game.

I was getting a little impatient watching the Infamous 2 Halloween QL because it felt like the first 5+ minutes was Brad aimlessly running around in circles at that plaza area.

cuz I'm a member but I rarely use the HD feed for bandwidth concerns. I still get the decent 1500 kbps 360p stream off the site.
 
After watching the Quick Look, Sonic Gen did not look that great. Although, it looked interesting enough to make me want to pick it up - which is a step above avoiding most of the previous games. If it dropsin price before Christmas, then it will be mine.
 
The new Sonic game is another example of designing games for idiots. It wasn't enough that Robotnik was jumping sky high and his ass was glowing. Nooooo the Chao basically had to explain the whole tactic for the boss battle. I was able to figure shit like this out within minutes when I was six years old what is wrong with people today?
